Rufus Wainwright

"For Rufus Wainwright, being gay can be a bit of a distraction.

Wainwright, who has been open about his homosexuality since the release of his eponymous debut album in 1998, acknowledges that he isn't the only gay pop star, but believes he is the first to begin his career totally out of the closet.

Though his personal life has resulted in tons of press in the past decade, it has also been a liability, Wainwright told The Times.

"It's an exciting prospect, and always has been, but on the other hand, you know, it has diminished at times my success," he said. "But I can't really - there's no sort of skirting the issue, because it is just a plain fact."" [The Montclair Times]

Lucy Wainwright Roche opened for her brother Rufus at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair, NJ on Friday night, the 13th of February. They both play again, with no electricity, on March 4th at City Winery with Sean Lennon who was recently added to the Blackoutsabbath bill.

"Wow from the third to last pic it looks like the average age of the attendees was 50+!"

You probably get a lot of middle-aged NJ people who go because it's so conveniently located.

Who likes this guy? He gets so much attention for such mundane music. People in Jersey don't have many entertainment options so I understand why they were there. Look at his smug sister pretending to be interesting. Barf.

i like this guy quite a lot.

Posted by Anonymous | February 16, 2009 1:20 PM

I like him a lot too.

But I have to say, I thought the sightlines at the venue were awful. We had seats in the last few rows of the orchestra section, and could see absolutely nothing but the heads in front of us. And everyone was seated! It's not like people were standing up and blocking the view. In a seated venue, with everyone in their seats, I couldn't see a thing. The 6 foot tall guy next to me complained of the same thing - he couldn't see anything on stage. For $40, I expect more than that.

That was the first time I'd been to the Wellmont since they started having shows there. Yes, it's convenient. But with those sightlines, I don't know if I'd go again.

1:30 I saw a GA show there and the sightlines seemed good. I was in the lower level of the orchestra though towards the back of that section.

I preferred Lucy to Rufus! She has the sweetest voice, and she was as charming as her songs.

mundane music my ass.
what the hell is 'mundane' music anyway?

Posted by Anonymous | February 16, 2009 6:27 PM

mundane is a word somebody who licks Arcade Fire's ass would use, at least Rufus can sing and write good songs, unlike most of the crap you indie retard love

Posted by Anonymous | February 16, 2009 10:16 PM

Wow. I use the word "mundane" occasionally and hate being confused with an ass licker. Thanks for the heads up 10:16.

Yeah, anyone who calls Rufus' music mundane takes a sreious credibility hit - you can call it many things & not like it, but mundane isn't a fair word for his music.

It's the same as all those posers who think the Beastie Boys have rhythm - no credibility.

Many people in this audience had travelled from Europe to see Rufus. I was one of them. The venue had problems but both Lucy and Rufus were superb as always.
Mundane? Have you ever seen Rufus live?

The music of Rufus Wainwright is heavily influenced by Classical music, Opera, Broadway and Pop! He has set several Shakespeare sonnets to music to be performed in Berlin this Easter and written an opera in French called "Prima Donna" to be performed in Manchester, England this Summer. So no, He is not to all tastes, but his music could hardly be described as "mundane". As for the age of the audience, the demographic is mature but the youngest that I met was six years old. It might come as a shock to realise that some people enjoy music their whole life. I was touring with a group of European fans that included many nationalities including UK, Irish, Dutch, French, German and Algerian. Rufus may not be as "pop" accessible as some musicians but he does have some dedicated fans who "get it".
The refurbished Wellmont is still having teething problems as far as I could tell and seating was quite chaotic. It is a real privilege to have such a local venue and I do hope that this improves for the good citizens of Montclair and environs.
