"...Shad's a far better rapper than Kanye West." [OkayPlayer]

A last minute addition to the BrooklynVegan party at Pianos during CMJ 2008, rapper Shad was one of that hazy day's highlights and a definite crowd pleaser. He played solo, backed by his DJ, and even sang some songs with a guitar (and I've read he sometimes plays with a full band too). One night before Pianos, Shad played his first NYC show at Arlene's Grocery. Northern Touch was there, and writes...
After a warm Canadian welcome from a CBC radio host Shad took to the stage for the first time performing in NYC to a packed crowd. After introducing his band, a DJ and bassist, Shad got the crowd jumping right away, with a bouncy track, backed by a heavy bass, and precise cuts. Not soon after Shad brought out an acoustic guitar to accompany his spoken word like delivery before slowing adding the band back in the mix to keep the show live and diverse.Although Shad hasn't made his mark in the United States yet, the Canadian has already gained some acclaim in his own country where, among other things, he went up against Caribou, Holy Fuck, Plants and Animals, Stars, Basia Bulat, Black Mountain and the Weakerthans for the 2008 Polaris prize. Check out the track above for a taste of why.
Shad has been compared to fellow Canadian emcee K-OS, and Windy City's native son Common, all good company, and fair comparison. But what sets Shad K apart from his piers is his honest, positive easy conversational type flow.
"I Tunes, eye-patchNow it's time for him to become known in the US (where he has yet to release his record). Shad will make, what I think will be his second trip to our country this March for at least three appearances at SXSW, and then he'll be back for a much longer stay over the summer when he plays all 45 dates of the Warped Tour. No new NYC dates at the moment unless you count the NYC-area Warped shows which I realize you don't (for more than one reason). All dates, and more CMJ pictures, below...
I'm in the same boat where the pirates be
Tell'em I'm down with that pirate stee
They don't buy it, I say don't buy it - pirate me
If it's I'll, it'll spread virally"

Shad is changing the game in Canada, and hopefully worldwide.
Hip hop isn't dead, it just moved north for a bit - but we'll share.

Awesome dude, awesome words, awesome tunes, awesome beats. dude is the total package in terms of making a name for canadian hip-hop.
Posted by Andrew | February 24, 2009 4:14 PM
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful :)
...and, even though you don't need to make comparisons - if we are gonna do it, then yes, compare Shad to folk like K-OS, and Common, but not Kanye... Kanye is good at performing on stage and producing a track... an Emcee though, he's not. He's a kinda/sorta Rapper in my book. Not dissin, just saying.
So yeah, Shad runs with the best of them ~ those golden tongued Emcees on the M.I.C. !
He also has a wikid, lovely voice as his personal instrument.
Go Shadders, Go TLO :)

Shad will be the biggest thing out of Canada until Quebec seperates...
This guy is the real-deal. He needs to be 'found' by the powers-that-be in music in the US of A, and, more importantly, he needs to be heard.
This guy is positive, and more importantly, real.
London, Ontario represent.
Posted by Jeff | February 24, 2009 4:26 PM
Best thing to come out of London Ontario since... probably anything really I'm a huge fan and hope for only the best to come, which is pretty much a guarantee if you like his stuff (which everyone does!) :D

Shad is a performer like no other. His smooth but catchy rythms, powerfully implicit lyrics makes him one of a kind. He's brings life to an art form that is, well, dying a slow death.
Worth every minute spent in Vancouver at the Biltmore. A true Canadian gem.
Posted by KC | February 24, 2009 5:04 PM
Shadrach is the one dopest M.C around right now, not only does 'The Old Prince' have bangin tunes but his debut 'When this is over' is also amazingly amazing.

I was looking for some great NEW rap when Shad came in with his amazing album, The Old Prince.
And on top of that, he puts on a wicked show with his band.
If you've never heard of him before, he just might be your new favorite.
Posted by Ariel | February 24, 2009 6:54 PM
Shad is absolutley redic.
someone posted that he's better than kanye,
what about jay-z? common? yup. he's better than those too.
I get it, it all sounds so sacreligious...BETTER THAN JAY?! NOO!
but really, but Shad's "the old prince" and youll get it.
or better yet, go see his show.
then tell me whos better
Posted by Sisteroni | February 24, 2009 6:56 PM

I've had the oppertunity to see shad live here in Hamilton and I can say he is easily the most entertaining act I've seen. His lyrics are far deeper then anyone I've heard in the industry.
If you love hip hop then you need to follow this guys music.

Slim Shady >>>>> Shad

This guy is seriously one of my favorite rappers ever. He's not trying to do anything to flashy, He doesn't swear every 5 seconds on a song, he just makes smooth and amazingly lyrical hip-hop. The hip-hop world needs more shads.

"BIGGEST THING OUTA CANADA SINCE PAMELA'S DOUBLE D'S!!!!"
but seriously this dude is UNREAL, whenever I hear his tunes something inside me wants to freak out and "rock rock to it!" cuz it for sure is heartfelt 'unique music'.
Pure soul, pure genius, pure musician. Canada is bringing it, and Shad'll be running at the forefront of it all before you know it.
HIP-HOP just got a facelift!
Posted by LB | February 25, 2009 2:41 PM
Shad's the truth. Can't wait for him to get back in the studio after this tour and get some new stuff out there.
Posted by JS | February 25, 2009 2:55 PM
say what you want, but the truth is shad is the kinda of down to earth artist that is always in touch with his always growing fanbase. sure, a PR company can buy a following, but shad has built one organically.
doesn't hurt that he spits straight fire everytime he steps on stage.
and wtf is with all the comparisons? this isn't american idol bitches.
Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2009 3:54 PM
Shad actually is genius, he writes songs about life, from things as deep as the angel who became the devil to brushing his teeth.
you can't COMPARE shad to anyone because he's completely original.
my opinion of hip-hop is forever changed because of Shad, and thats worth something.
Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2009 6:53 PM
Shad Is such an earth shattering MC it can only be described as retardation. BEST IN THE WORLD TODAY, And I will physically fight anyone that says otherwise. FACT: Shad Kills 99.9% of whackness on contact.
Posted by JB | February 25, 2009 7:31 PM
Shad kills it every time he performs. Speaks straight from the heart.
PS K'Naan's new album is soo tight. Buy that on iTunes for only 7.99!
Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2009 1:37 AM
Anybody who sleeps on Shad has already slept on real hiphop...it don't get no more professionally defined than Shad grippin' the mic breaking it down line by line...I became a instant fan and if you seek him lyrically so will you
