WAVVES, Woods, Blank Dogs (and Nodzzz) @ Less Artists More Condos, NYC - pics
photos by Toby Tenenbaum

Nathan Williams's starter Flock of Seagulls haircut was silly with sweat, slapping at his face and neck as he jerked around on the tiny stage at Less Artists More Condos in the West Village on Saturday night. But after nearly every song he stopped for a look in the virtual mirror. Not at the hair, but at less likely concerns. Was his guitar tuned properly? (It was not.) Could he hit the notes the next song required? (Define hit. And notes.) Musing about whether he could pull off a particular number, he demurred -- "No. I can't. Sorry." -- and then dove in anyway. The Wavvves album really is terrific. Wavves (the artist whose album has one more "v" than his name) also played a show with almost the exact same lineup (Woods/Nodzzz/Blank Dogs) one day earlier at Market Hotel and one day later (yesterday) at Underground Lounge (where Blank Dogs reportedly cancelled).Slickness isn't really a concern for Mr. Williams, a one-man band from San Diego who records as Wavves, but crispness is. His terrific second album, "Wavvves" (Fat Possum), teems with scrappy, energetic, summery chunks of noisy pop: smart-aleckyness via Weezer, cooing via the Beach Boys, all masked by digital effects and a thick garage-rock haze. (The album is to be released this week on iTunes and next month on CD.) [NYTIMES]
Wavves will reportedly be back in NYC at the end of March.
Nodzzz went on first at Less Artists More Condos. Toby could't get through the door in time, but he did get lots of pics of the rest of the show. More of them below...

NODZZZ, Woods, and WAVVES were all excellent yesterday too. And yes, Black Dogs were a no show.

blank dogs seem to cancel a lot? or is it just overzealous promoters adding him to the bill unconfirmed?
Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2009 12:55 PM
avey tare was at this show and he dug gary war, whom you neglected to mention opened the show!

Best $5 I have spent on music yesterday in a long time. All 3 bands were each different and played well. I think if you look back at this bill in 6 months many will be kicking themselves for not going. I only went Sunday and the place despite it's timy size sounded alright. Would have loved for this to have been at the merc but heck no would it have been $5 - but easily would have paid up for a slightly larger room.

Market Hotel show was fantastic.

Blank Dogs are testy. I assure you promoters are not adding him to bills "unconfirmed"

Mr. Blank Dog is not "testy". He's a perfectly nice guy, he just didn't like having his music and a photo posted on brooklynvegan without his consent. More people should stand up to this site's blatant theft of intellectual property for profit.
Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2009 3:10 PM
what does that have to do with Blank Dogs canceling show(s), 3:10?
Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2009 3:15 PM
Someone in the band was sick.
Just because he canceled doesn't mean he's "testy", despite how he got thrown under the bus here.

"brooklynvegan" did not leave the "testy" comment. The "testy" comment was in response to someone asking why Blank Dogs cancels shows and was obviously written by someone close to the situation since they wrote "I assure you promoters are not adding him to bills unconfirmed".
Anon 3:10 (probably Mr. Blank Dog himself) obviously read into the "testy" comment and brought up something completely unrelated to any conversation going on in this thread (until now).

Fader has an hilarious dissection of that lame NYTimes review posted at length above:

Sunday was the best day (except for the whole, lame Blank Dogs canceling thing).
Woods never sounded better and Wavves was great. Nodzzz were good also, but not as noticeably better than the other two.

Blank Dogs only had to cancel on Sunday because Todd P didn't tell Mr. Blank Dog (who has a job) about the show before booking it.

I'm really glad that someone took the time and care to carefully place the duck tape on the stairwell to get in and out of LAMC. Thank God for that, because otherwise I'm CONVINCED I would have forgot how to use stairs.
Posted by Avant Guarde Musician | February 10, 2009 12:51 AM
hey 12:51. believe me, the tape worked and made things a lot more efficient. one side for in and one side for out, enshrined in tape, actually helped.
the lines getting in and getting out moved a lot faster than at other shows there.

DUCT TAPE OFFENDS ME PERSONALLY
Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2009 11:14 AM
That "hilarious dissection of that lame NYTimes review" from Fader was neither hilarious nor a dissection.
It reads like some kneejerk high school clique mystique defense to the popular kid realizing that the nerds and outcasts are actually pretty neat...
So the (self-appointed) pariahs enjoy that moment briefly and say, "I told you so," but they get scared soon after that their precious scene has been compromised.
They hold a secret meeting and they're like, "We gotta get these guys back, and how!" In their brainstorming session, they discuss such drastic actions as egging the popular kid's house and letting the air out of his tires, but in the end settle for a poorly written opinion piece in the school newspaper.
And what happens?
Well, they all graduate and move on with their lives. The popular kid has learned a valuable lesson from his short friendship with the cabal of cool and has come to realize that things aren't always as they seem. Indeed, curiousities often demand exploration. In his continued willingness to learn and explore, he makes many friends and develops a rich understanding of the world and its fascinating & varied cultures.
Less fortunate are those scene kids who are forced to grow up by the perseverance of time and the marketplace. They parlay their school paper careers into covering the scene on a regional or national level...but in their quest to guard the gate of cool and simultaneously exist within the realm of cool, they destroy themselves and lose touch. They lose touch with their thoughts, their opinions, their ability to discern, their own personal sense of culture...
And they are left alone with lonely sarcasm.
Thank you.

duct tape is bad for the environment
always put the environment before entertainment efficiency or safety people

I'll take the NYT over Fader any day.
kind of hilarious that Fader thinks they represent any "cool kid" critical perspective.
They're even nerdier than the Vice people.

Woods were excellent

"why'd that article dis Woods so hard? "
Because Woods actually are not good.

nice comeback 1:22, debates are always won by someone saying "no" and nothing more to support their argument. Neato.
