Black Lips

"Having previously conquered Mexico and the Holy Land, in this edition of Music World the Black Lips set out for a six-city tour of the Indian subcontinent.

While bringing punk to the second most populous (and first most insane) nation in the world may seem relatively cut and dry to you, the band quickly find their missionary work complicated by an endless series of unforeseen factors including crowded trains, extremely conservative and homophobic cops, cheap hash, guys in knitted caps, unlabeled pills, weird bathroom practices, the McDonalds Chicken Maharaja, a tour manager so shitty he's like the villain from a Beatles movie, starvation, excellent haircuts, secret whisky, and the half-buried skeleton of what's either a camel or a dinosaur."

That blurb is the description of a video documentary VBS.TV posted about the trip Black Lips took to India in January. Watch the whole thing below. Check out the two MP3's off their new album 200 Million Thousand, out now via VICE.

Now on tour, the Black Lips made a stop at Bowery Ballroom in NYC last night (3/9), and do it again tonight (3/10) at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. If you go, make sure you don't miss Let's Wrestle who are in NYC for a few shows before touring over to Austin for SXSW.

i thought the show was good, couldn't believe how packed it was. haven't seen the black lips for years and was really impressed how they incorporated sound effects without sounding lame.
also caught the first band, Georgiana Starlington and actually liked them on par with the lips. they had a pedal steel, anyone know anything about them?

last night's show was... meh. i like their music so was bummed they didn't play some of their best tunes (veni vidi vici or navajo). the sound was both loud and muddled. spitting in the air and catching it in your mouth is not "punk". yes there was some moshing, some crowd surfing (guitar player was predictably dropped) and some "crazy" stage presence. but to me it all felt like weak imitations of the real thing. if you want to see a great wild raw band - go see les savy fav on friday.

WTF?!? Full US tour and no Baltimore or Philly? Weak shit.

But it is nice to see they are playing a gay bar, The Blue Lagoon, in Santa Cruz, CA.

5:01...lolz. LSF is no more "punk" than black lips... both of which i like, neither of which are "punk".

Thought it was a decent show. Kind of reserved/ grown up for the black lips compared to past shows. Caught half the first band georgiana starlington? Actually pretty rad, would of liked to catch their whole set but never heard of them and came late. Gentlemen Jesse was ok but didn't knock my socks off.
