Bruar Falls

As mentioned, Bruar Falls is opening its doors on Grand St. in Williamsburg tonight (3/27). Brought to us by the people behind Cake Shop, the new Brooklyn music venue located in the spot that previously housed the Lucky Cat (RIP), will basically be using tonight to test out the new system. Deastro and Choir of Believers are on the bill. The venue is not 100% complete, so if you go, don't be hard on them. Also, they will only be letting around 100 people in. Then after tonight they will stay closed for further renovation until April 1st (when Pow Wow, White Hinterland and others play a show there).

The official grand opening party will happen on April 4th with a Brooklyn band that has been growing in popularity enough for them to be listed as "secret guest" (for now). The 'ex ski-resort employees' will be joined on that night by Acrylics and DJ Justin Miller.

In general, owner Andy Bodor tells me that the new space "is going to be simply 'dancier' than Cake Shop", "showcasing more of the futurist/damaged beat/artschool/vintage synth/go-go vs ghostpunk whatever-it-is sound". I'm super psyched about it.

Full schedule and more info HERE, and on the new venue's site.

can't believe they're charging $6 for this and calling it a show to test out the sound system.

just let people in for free. i didn't bother going in.

$6??? In this economy!? I'm glad you showed them who's boss and kept walking. Good for you, pal, good for you.

it was $6 because it was two bands on tour, and they split the $ douche. keep walkin, to new haven. check out a jam band for free. you munch.

"the new space "is going to be simply 'dancier' than Cake Shop", "showcasing more of the futurist/damaged beat/artschool/vintage synth/go-go vs ghostpunk whatever-it-is sound"."

A dancier vintage synth club on Grand Street. That sounds familiar. Luxx anyone? And we all remember what happened to that place.

At least last night, Bruar Falls looks more like a straight-up bar (pinball machine, jukebox) that a performance space but that may change by the grand opening, especially as when I walked by in the afternoon it looked like they were still doing construction. Fancier-looking than I was expecting.

There was no stage last night, just a corner set up for the bands, though that may change too? I left before any of the bands actually started playing.

"ghostpunk" . . . man, I love it when insiders use language that, well, has only really been used by one band to describe their own sound, as some sort of cache on cool. Can't remember the last time I heard such a cavalcade of cliches in describing a featured sound, but at least the ghostpunk reference is known by, well, no one beyond These are Poopoo.

Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine.

Verlaine verlaine verlane indeed! I've been looking at that graphic and swearing it's the cover of the Verlaines album "Bird Dog," the one with the amazing epic ballad at the end of Side One, "Just Mum." It's messing with my head.

I'm gonna go play "Death and the Maiden" now.

FYI - this space used to be called Lucky Cat.

F Who's I? Trash once tried to be a tranny bar called Toyboxxxxxxxx but that's not really important either.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2009 7:05 PM

Performance space? No way. It's a straight up bar. Don't bother going. BEWARE of the street shootings on that block. Bullets, guns not media shootings.

what the hell are you talking about 3:28?

Williamsburg is safer than your mom's house.
