Camera Obscura @ The Bell House - March 24, 2009 (Greg Chow)
Camera Obscura

Camera Obscura played the Bell House in Brooklyn last night, March 24th (check out the set list below). The band stays in NYC today for a show at the Mercury Lounge tonight (3/25).

Camera Obscura next head to the UK and Ireland for a series of shows in April, and then the band returns for a May/June North America tour. That includes a Wednesday, June 24th Webster Hall show in NY. Tickets go on Am Ex presale today/Wedneday at noon, and regular sale Friday.

The Scots are coming off of an Austin/SXSW stint that included a performance at the Central Presbyterian Church)...

The good news/bad news is the songs from the forthcoming album on new label 4AD sound just like the songs from the last album, "French Navy" being the best of the bunch. Tracyanne was as fragile and adorable in real life as she sounds on record, at one point commenting on the "fuckers" who were walking out of the church early. The crowd was one of the more eclectic-looking of the night. [Houston Press]
Also coming up - on April 21st, the band is releasing new record My Maudlin Career on 4AD. The label just posted a new video for album opener and "best of the bunch" song "French Navy" - watch it below.

The Bell House set list, all upcoming tour dates, and above-mentioned video, below...

Webster Hall? Damn, I was hoping they would do Bowery or Music Hall next. Now I have to find a ticket to tonight's Mercury Lounge show.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 9:51 AM

maybe they'll add a music hall date on the 23rd when Webster Hall gets close to selling out.

Great show last night but I swear if that guy who always comes to NYC Camera shows with his annoying girlfriend and thinks it's cute to heckle them with "LAST SONG!" shows up again tonight, we're gonna have our first ever brawl at a Camera Obscura concert. Mosh pit will ensue.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 10:54 AM

it was a very nice show - the band looked and sounded great. my first time seeing them. is it normal for there to be so many doe-eyed girls meticulously recording the set-lists in their moleskins?

Posted by anon | March 25, 2009 11:02 AM

I didn't really think of the adjectives "fragile and adorable" when I saw that picture.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 11:03 AM

^^^ I think you're going to have to get ready for a brawl.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 11:04 AM

"Last Song" isn't a heckle. It's a request.

Tracyanne was asking for requests last night for tonights show at Merc. A popular B-Side of theirs is called "The Last Song". Check it out.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 11:09 AM

Brawls and Camera Obscura? Sounds a wee bit like an oxymoron.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 11:14 AM

I agree. Sounds like 10:54 has his panties in a bunch. Chill out, man.

Don't let me down on this, playa!

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 11:28 AM

I don't think yelling out "The Last Song" when they band is asking for requests is nearly as annoying as all the people who keep requesting "80s Fan" throughout the set. Give that one a rest.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 11:46 AM

Amazing show. Though I might have enjoyed it more if that girl up front would have been more respectful and stopped her incessant talking throughout the set. She did not shut up once. Seriously.

wow, i'm shocked that everyone has an opinion!

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 12:55 PM

did anyone think that they sounded a bit flat? I wish they had a tiny bit more layered sound granted they have 7 musicians. it was overall good though.

that girl was annoying.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 1:19 PM

the video was removed from YouTube. Updated with new one.

Posted by brooklynvegan | March 25, 2009 1:32 PM

i thought it was a great show... awesome set, awesome venue, great finale on Razzle Dazzle Rose.

much better than the Warsaw show. can't wait for tonight!

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 1:34 PM

what time are they going on tonight?

Posted by man behind the curtain | March 25, 2009 1:47 PM

yeah, the show was great. but it missed a little tang that would have made it perfect

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 2:48 PM

i'm bummed i missed the show, i heard there was this really cool guy there with the bluest eyes.

I was standing right next to the couple the people above are talking about. They were really nice! Not the kind of people you would want to "brawl" withat all. Just very excited about Camera Obscura. The band seemed to be really friendly with them and chatted about past gigs.

They didn't bother me at all. It was actually a little refreshing to see people who were excited to be there and were vocal about liking the band with no air of pretension. Them and the venezuelan couple in the front were a lot of fun!

Just my 2 cents.

Posted by Shelley | March 25, 2009 3:12 PM

I'll hold Shelley while you guys beat down that couple.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 3:38 PM

such hostility.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 3:49 PM

i'm really disappointed. my friend and i up at the bar were doing our best to be annoying and make fun of everything that moved, and these 'fans' get all the venom.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 3:50 PM

"the venezuelan couple in the front were a lot of fun"???

you have got to be kidding. the girl would not shut up. she was so rude.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 3:55 PM

This was a really great show. I know I've already said it... but I had so much fun last night. The new songs are wonderful. "Honey in the Sun" is an instant classic. Can't wait to get the album.

The band seemed a little nervous, like usual. But Tracey was in good spirits. They seemed to really be enjoying themselves.

Looking forward to the show tonight. Hopefully they mix up the setlist a little.

Posted by wembley | March 25, 2009 4:02 PM

sounds like some of these people should just stay home an listen to the records in private. they seem to have a real issue being around people.

i hope these idiots above have fun going to shows with their arms crossed and scowls on their faces.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 4:06 PM

camera obscura had this problem at warsaw too -- tons of people talking through the entire set (and plenty leaving before it was over). that said, warsaw was a great show and i expect tonight to be great too.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 4:11 PM

sounds like most shows in NYC these days unfortunately...

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 4:14 PM

I'd MEH it.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 4:20 PM

@4:20... don't flatter yourself. I'm sure she wouldn't MEH you.

Posted by wembley | March 25, 2009 4:40 PM

Why is the choice between being an annoying idiot and being a stiff? What about the happy middle where you visibly show fun while being respectful of those around you? It is possible you know.

And for the record, Camera Obscura are so adorable as to even make this fight cute.

-I'm the guy who started this by the way, venting about the "LAST SONG!" couple.

Posted by Anonymous | March 25, 2009 4:48 PM

^^^ I'm sure you won't actually have the balls to say anything to that guy tonight if he shows up (which I'm sure he will).

Amazing show. The band looked the happiest I've ever seen them. They sounded top-notch.

Posted by wembley | March 26, 2009 12:56 AM

I was next to the Camera Obscura groupies and the Venezuelan girl.

first off, the male groupie had a vague Bonnie Prince Billy vibe. and was sweating _a lot_ for a twee band show. second, how do you drink that much genny cream? - it's like ass fog! and he grabbed the setlist right before the encore. thanks dude - have fun putting that on the wall next to the pics of tracy anne and gavin, with the candles and such.

as regards our southern friend, i suggest the band renames the song "Teen Yager" and adds lyrics about a future in space flight, or doing shots in a frat house. she said it was her first Camera Obscura show and first time in NYC, so i'll give her the benefit, but i'd give her more leeway if her not into it bf hadn't been there.

there WERE a ton of smart girls glasses recording the setlist in their ever-so-hip moleskins (oooo...you caught up). the greatest part of this: it was what, 80% new songs - so you'd hear "What's /this/ song called? What's this one?!"

i do prefer people being politely into the band, enjoying the music and dancing around, but you DON'T headbang to "Hey Lloyd...". I'm looking at you, genny cream dude.

Posted by jellyfish | March 26, 2009 1:08 AM

hmm i thought the show was a tad boring. i like the bass player though, that dude is cool.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2009 2:10 AM

that show was a real bore. Kicking myself for choosing it over elvis perkins that night.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2009 9:00 AM

If your bored then you're boring... kids today have such short attention spans thats why they like Ponytail and shit like that.. bands that don't even attempt to sing or write songs..

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2009 9:06 AM

I feel kinda sorry for 1:08... he can't just forget about being cool for a minute and enjoy himself. it's a shame.

way to go with the cheap shots and the low blows! pretty cool. which guy were you at the show? the one with the skinny black jeans and wayfarers? listening to your ipod with a sullen look on your face? gotcha.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2009 9:16 AM

Vibe was melloooooow. Pleasant crowd. Shit was hot as hell in there, though.

Show was not as lively as, say, a Les Savy show, or some craziness like that, but solid, crowd friendly musicians with nice scotty voices and solid instrument playing. True professionals.

Cheer up emo hos!

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2009 9:39 AM

^^^^ somebody who wasn't at show.

Who wears wayfarers inside in low lit room?

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2009 9:41 AM

hey 9:16am, i don't own any skinny jeans and wtf are wayfarers?

i was dancing around too (in the front row), but i wasn't being obnoxious like genny cream and co.

Posted by jellyfish | March 26, 2009 10:29 AM

i think he meant raybans

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2009 10:36 AM

This is the guy who complained yesterday about Last Song Dude and dudette:

They were there last night - and while I couldn't see them from the back I didn't hear peep out of them. Win.

Wonderful show. How is "French Navy" NOT going to be a smash hit from coast to coast? I just don't get how they aren't HUGE.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2009 10:45 AM

the beat down last night should have gone to the guy who thought he was borat.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2009 3:55 PM
