CBS's 92.3 K-Rock Is Switching to Top 40

"Making its third identity change since Howard Stern left for satellite radio three years ago, WXRK in New York, better known as K-Rock, will switch to a Top 40 format, the station's parent company, CBS Radio, announced on Monday.Instead of the "active rock" K-Rock has been playing -- mostly classic rock, with some harder-edged current rock in light rotation -- the station, to be known as Now FM (92.3), will play music from acts like "Kanye West, Beyoncé, Pink, Flo Rida, Akon, Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake," according to the announcement. The change will be made at 5 p.m. on Wednesday." [Ny Times] (thx danny)

Support WFMU during their once a year marathon, happening now. WFMU - where even begging dj's sound better than any other radio programming.

People still listen to FM radio?
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 10:11 AM
NYC hasn't had a good non-college rock radio station since Q104.3 back in the day when they first changed formats from classical. They used to play Pantera. Awesome.

now everyone can just listen to KEXP via 91.5 FM. John in the morning every week day from 9 am-12 pm and thursday nights from 8 pm-10pm. It is a start! www.kexp.org

I stick to NYU, Columbia and Seton Hall:
89.1, 89.9, 89.5
89.1 NYU plays everything, in the afternoon it could go from bands that are on BV or Pitchfork, to interesting locals, then at night it gets to world music/experimental. Lots of original music on there.
89.9 Columbia, known for jazz, also does crazy stuff at night, like all indian music sunday night and tons of experimental music during weeknights.
89.5 Seton Hall, known for metal and hardcore, takes a few breaks from that to put on stuff like Animal Collective, Les Claypool and Mars Volta
I only listen to K-Rock/Q104/RXP when trying to win tickets.

RXP's not so terrible - a good alternative when the WFUV DJs are chatting endlessly or 91.5 has switched over to that nutjob after John in the Monrning

werd - 3 options - kexp/wnyc/ipod.
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 10:38 AM
Remember when they're used to be actual good songs in the Top 40?
Even stuff like Ambrosia is like The Beatles compared to this stuff.
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 10:45 AM
KROCK has generally been crappy lately. I usually switch between WFUV (90.7) and RXP.
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 10:50 AM
101.9 is good. Whatever the name of it is. They play a good selection of songs...
Posted by Ron | March 10, 2009 10:54 AM
^yeah 101.9 RXP, they're great, mos of the time anyway.

11:11 - Yeah, I really like Pinfield

91.7 is a secret. WXCI, some college station in connecticut, that play amazing music 100% of the time. its amazing, just getting reception is the problem
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 11:57 AM
College-rock/Alt-rock as a format has been dying the turn of the decade. Not surprising. Seeing a lot of stations across the country making this switch.

any word on OPie and Anthony?
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 12:43 PM
I'm so glad this station is failing. After the the complete lack of ethics they had when Stern left, plus the ridiculous switch to half-assed talk show host...they deserve this. They completely turned their backs on the music and talent that built it to what it was. I don't know why they expected anyone to come running back when they all of a sudden tried to be a "rock" station again.

>any word on OPie and Anthony?
fired.

as long as they play "single ladies," i am happy. i love that song!
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 1:33 PM
I mean I haven't listened to K-Rock since before puberty, but its pathetic that the entire tri-state area only has one mainstream radio station (RXP), but like everyone else I will miss not having K-Rock to try to win tickets off of, I actually won several times via their website

Opie And Anthont will survive fine on sattelite. Screw FM Radio
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 5:46 PM
I grew up in an area that had 3 classic rock/rock/metal stations and its kinda sad that my son won't grow up with AC/DC and Blue Oyster Cult, but rather Britney and the Jonas brothers. Not that anyone needs to hear that classic rock stuff for the 1000x time, but it provides a good foundation to get started into something more interesting later on in life.
I guess I should assume that my son will just steal all his music from the internet anyways and carry his music in a portable DAP.
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 9:27 PM
The new 101.9 is not bad as far as corporate radio goes.
There is tons of great radio in NYC: 89.1 89.5 91.1
KEXP is terrible. It's basically Pitchfork approved music. Don't be a follower.
Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 10:48 PM
This is BS. Why on earth does the New York and the northern New Jersey area need another POP top 40 station????? Pathetic! The pop music today is garbage! The hip hop music is worse. They are forcing a lot of people to use strictly cds or ipods. I may have to invest in sattelite, not because of the talk shows, but because of the music currently on the fm radio. I love driving outside this region because I can actually get quality music and a variety at that. Cbs is dropping the ball on this decision. They actually had a niche that no other station had in this area. Are they trying to kill rock for garbage like bebop, pop or hip hop...whatever it is called now. I am in my 20s and rock in any form is still my listening choice.
Posted by John | March 11, 2009 12:17 AM
Contrary to what many think, we need another TOP 40 station because this way if we miss a song done by Flo Rida or Timberlake on one of the thirty other stations that play the song over and over and over again, now we can tune into NOW FM and catch it over and over and over again. Thank god for that. Good job CBS.
I am so tired of hearing a song about being in the club! Can they stop making that song? Don't get me wrong I thought KROCK was slipping lately but another top 40 station playing the same stuff!
NY needs a good rock station because I dont like top 40 and I never will. Where do I go for my music? What a disgrace.
Posted by Al | March 11, 2009 10:08 AM
I used to love Top-40 music many decades ago, but the current crop of music that's out NOW (pun Intended) Is a total disgrace. 92.3 NOW..what a waste. It's the same old garbage music that Is played on Z-100. There Is not ONE current song played on Z-100 or NOW that I can stomach. Click goes the Volume--Off switch!!!

like NY needs another crap pop music station?!
Jonai and the like 24/7 everywhere you look-sickening!
NY used to be the coolest, edgiest city...wtf?!
It's the end of the world as we know it...and I feel sick!
Thank God for WSOU.Sometimes I just don't want the screaming, tho, and it was nice to have more than one station I could stand.
And that cutie,Booker just got his damn job back!
Posted by linny | March 11, 2009 9:38 PM
Do we really need ANOTHER radio station that plays boring, unimaginative, soul-less, talentless, uninspired, pre-packaged god damn songs? The people who listen to this "noise" are just as cookie-cutter as that crap they listen to. They're all fake, watch American idol and are into things only because some douche bag says its cool. If you live in the Central Jersey area you still have these stations: 89.5 93.3 94.1 95.1
95.9 101.9 104.5 and 105.5. there was 106.3 but they suffered the same fate as k-rock.
Posted by PT | March 11, 2009 11:09 PM
why would they do a thing like this???? i turned on K-rock today expecting to hear something i like.. and I couldn't believe i heard BRITNEY SPEARS!! I thought it was a mistake.. and then it went to another KAtie Perry song. ughh.. this shouldn't be happening. first they got rid of 92.7 WLIR.. now KROCK. what next? anyone remember X 107? that was cool too
Posted by ashley | March 12, 2009 2:01 AM
I'm willing to bet the music played on the original K-Rock is just as shitty as the new pop format they're switching to. And LOL at "K-Rock", is it just me or does every single metropolitan city in the united states have a station called "K-Rock"?
Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2009 2:05 AM
THANK YOU THANK YOU ! I HAVE HATED EVERY DAY OF K-ROCK! I worked at 92 KTU and loved it. The jerks that came in with K Rock were so macho and animalistic. It's funny now that they're going to try to appeal to women. Who cares, whatever they call this IT IS DANCE MUSIC. Yahoo! Now let's have a exorcism of the building.
STERN SUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so damn happy, I believe in miracles - even if it takes more than two damn decades.

Posted by cindy | March 12, 2009 9:28 AM
I think it sucks that K Rock is switching to top 40. I hope they fail because they made the wrong decision.
Posted by Jerzy | March 12, 2009 9:35 AM
i cant believe it, another rock station is gone. all rockers and metal heads need to start blasting thier car radios, radios at home and everywhere so we can hopefully block out all this crap that we always here. old school rockers lets go.
Posted by dave | March 12, 2009 10:39 AM
It's like Z100 without commercials. What a waste. Worst of all, they are boasting about playing 10,000 songs straight, but since it's top 40 they are playing the SAME 40 SONGS OVER AND OVER. playlist is circus, pokerface, you spin my head round, live your life, whatever you like, i hate this part, just dance, gives you hell, and 32 other songs. Seriously, I don't understand why CBS would change their format to be like other stations that already play these 15 times a day!! So unnecessary. I've had this station on at work today and the songs DON'T CHANGE!!! This station will not last.
Posted by Anonymous | March 12, 2009 4:17 PM
We do NOT need another top 40 station! I'm really saddened by this! I for one, have already changed my presets and this is new station is NOT included! Guess it's time to switch to sirius! =(

CBS radio thinks they are doing something groundbreaking and special by switching to a Top-40 format on 92.3. 92.3 Now Is nothing but the same fecal music that Is played on Z-100 and the 10 Million other Top-40 (CHR) clones across the country. 92.3 Today's poop (pop) music Is crap and New York does not need another CHR station, especially one that promises to play 10,000 songs In a row. You'll see In due time 92.3 Now will be 92.3 Wasn't. It will fail miserably just like all of the other past formats that were on CBS's 92.3 mhz In New York and rightfully so. What will be the next format to replace 92.3 Now In a month or so???
Posted by Jimmy D'Locke | March 12, 2009 5:11 PM
Another CBS blunder and a format destined to fail. This Is what happens when the suits run the radio biz. Geez...how many formats have failed on 92.3 In the past 10 years?? Counting 1, 2,3,4,5...99,100....92.3Now.

Now I have to buy a satellite radio because NOW just plain SUCKS. There are no longer any good FM stations out there. This format change is just suicide.
Posted by Teresa | March 13, 2009 2:08 AM
101.9 RXP reminds me of the old WDRE: more mainstream alternative/indie music. I don't listen to the radio much, but in the past week alone I heard them play both Catherine Wheel and TV On The Radio. They play the non-singles album cuts. Not bad. I hate morning radio, everyone has the same ol' zany DJ crap, but Pinfield is OK.
Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2009 5:14 AM
The state of current music made me permanently "crazy glue" my On/Off switch to off. CBS's 92.3NEVER just made me throw all of my radios Into the garbage can....
Posted by Ray D O'Shack | March 13, 2009 4:52 PM
almost as sad as another top 40 station is that this city has to rely on a station based in seatle, washington for new music.
Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2009 5:36 PM
NOW 92.3 IS THE MOST RETARDED RADIO STATION EVER CREATED. we had one, ONE rock station that played good music, and they take it away. I HATE YOU 92.3 I WILL NEVER PUT YOUR STATION ON! i hope you realize this when you lose all your fans. morons.
Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2009 10:46 PM
why would they do this?!?! granted radio sucks no matter what station but krock was one of the lesser of all evils... who needs more of that crap music they play on z-100? havent we had enough?
Posted by Anonymous | March 14, 2009 9:52 AM
Top 40 radio is not the main problem, it is what Top 40 has become. When I was growing up in the '70s and '80s, Top 40 meant many different styles. Old and young artists alike topped the charts. Nowadays, only young manufactured pop stars make the charts. Every thing sounds the same. I don't like Bette Midler, but even she had hits in the '80s, and you would hear an "old" artists like her among Michael Jackson and Motley Crue on Top 40 radio. Can't happen today.
Posted by Anonymous | March 14, 2009 11:16 AM
This is awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you take away the best show on the radio (O&A). Anyone who listens to Z100 are not going to leave that station.. they listen because they actually like those pathetic so-called djs just awful they talk about nothing useful or funny!! what a huge mistake they are only forces people to buy satelite.
Posted by Kerri Henderson | March 16, 2009 1:04 PM
What time does Daft Punk start putting out Top 40 records?
Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2009 1:30 PM
101.9 is still pretty good, playing some classic rock, but mostly alternative rock and some harder stuff as well.
Still a corporate radio station, but one of the better sources of music akin to what K-Rock was.
Posted by Layla | March 16, 2009 7:34 PM
105.5 WDHA-FM is another Rock Station, in Jersey. If you're lucky enough to live in central Jersey,
you can get the Philly/Lehigh Valley Stations:
93.3 WMMR, 94.1 WYSP, 95.1 WZZO.

WHAT THE FUCK It seems that this bullshit rap has really engulfed and took over the soft weak minds of not only, the youth of this generation retard, but of the morals of the cocksuckers in charge of the radio stations. I can only hope that when this shitty genre of garbage sounds these little fagget wannabes call music fades away like shitty disco did, that we who enjoyed the music of this station and have loyally given them such good ratings through all these years remember how these scumbags traded us off for a punk ass flash in the pan like little fuckin wayne... All in all go fuck yourself cbs.
Posted by matt | March 17, 2009 4:15 PM
What ever happaned to good....reallllll music???? Every station consists of the same shit...MTV, all of it, the same. I now, no longer need the radio, UNLESSS 92.3 K-rock comes back.So many fake ass, little posers.
Real music. Bring back 92.3 K-ROCK!
Posted by Krystal | March 18, 2009 12:01 AM
what is the point of having another freaking top 40 station? if I miss single ladies on z100 now I can turn I on 92.3 now fm and listen to it exactly 30 seconds later...
I don't want to listen to these mindless, fake, untalented "artists" who sold their souls to record compnies, when in reality they are merely 1 hit wonders and such...
nyc needs a ROCK station that plays real music by real artists. so my much for NYC being so diverse... oh wait, we have like 7 choices if top 40 stations, I'm an idiot...
Posted by stefani | March 19, 2009 9:46 PM

I was there when they played their last song.... and then I heart a ticking sound.... and then all the sudden i had a heart attack when I heard pop music... I thought it was a prank, a believable one at that by booker. But to much dismay.. it was not. FUCK YOU 92.3 NOW. F-U-C-K Y-O-U. And fuck you too CBS. F-U-C-K Y-O-U!!!!!!

I started listening to K-Rock around the summer of 95 and I loved it. I find it ironic that in their advertising, NOW-FM like to continualy call out Z-100. K-Rock survives as an online station(listening to it as right now), and I wish it would come back. We have enough Top 40 stations in NY and we need the DFP sponsoring K-Rock back.

This news does suck for Rock fans but, forget K-Rock and bring back Q104 instead. K-Rock was never able to take over the format anyway. They choose to play the same few rock songs all day. That is why they cannot survive as a rock station.
Who could forget Q104? If you were lucky enough to be around at that time, you could hear alternative, new metal and classic metal all in one hour. You would always be wondering what would be played next.
The list of music included AC/DC, Tool, Alice in Chains, Rush, Dio, Nirvana and so much more. Plus many new bands. The first time I heard Tool - Sober on Q104 I was blown away. Tool would be followed by Rage Against the Machine - Bomb track, NIN - Head like a hole, to many great tunes to name. Some of the songs were older like Dio and Danzig. This would make me smile and think of past times. Other moments I would be listening to something new that I could enjoy. Even better then that I would find moments of being surprised hearing something I would not normally hear on radio like Iron Maiden - Run to the hills.
I will miss K-Rock, but I mourned Q104. I still miss it. The K-Rock suites ruined the station by playing it safe. The same play list everyday. They never even really tried to be different.
