Handsome Furs

The Handsome Furs played to an enthusiastic, sold-out crowd at the Mercury Lounge on Friday. Dancing and even trivia were on order as the Montreal, husband and wife duo of Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry played in support of their upcoming record Face Control (Sub Pop). Boeckner explained that certain label and publicity folks were uneasy with the band selling copies of their new record in advance (it hits streets on March 10.) So, Boeckner and Perry held rounds of trivia between songs to win a copy of the new cd. Question: Who is Wayne Coyne's favorite Montreal band? Correct answer... Arcade Fire.

The Hundred in the Hands and a Kyp Malone-less Iran opened the show. More pictures below...

cocaine is a hell of a drug.

Posted by sloweducation | March 8, 2009 8:13 PM

boeckner also was swigging cough medicine with codeine throughout the show.

iran was fine. they just have absolutely no stage presence.

Interesting photos... nice figure ground configurations... crisp... seizing the moment, while telling tales without words... Looks like NYC has a least one talented photographer.

Hey hey my my new Pitchfork layout whoa it's kind of weird but I think it'll be good once I get used to it, too bad it's slow as hell to load.

BOMB, BOMB, BOMB! BOMB-BOMB IRAN!

And no one gives a shit what you think about P4K, asshole.

i wonder how Ron Paul would spell pitchfork. . .
ps. wow did Iran suck...
pss. the hundred in the hands were really great.

Posted by Anonymous | March 8, 2009 11:39 PM

Great show. But Iran didn't make sense in that lineup in the least bit.

john mccain, so bitter about the election that he's taking his anger out on third-place bloggers and indie bands!

The Hundred in the Hands were the best thing about this show! Handsome Furs played way too short, the trivia seemed like a filler for their anemic set. Weak!

not racist, but how random was the thuggy looking black guy in the front row? he was dancing his ass off during the furs set!

my friends and i love that guy

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2009 3:40 AM

Pretty racist if you ask me. Considering the guy didn't look thuggy one bit.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2009 4:40 AM

WHERE THE FUCK IS CALIFORNIA IN THE SCHEDULE?!

Posted by MOTHER | March 9, 2009 4:53 AM

Boeckner looks a little like Combat Rock era Mick Jones, with scruff.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2009 5:07 AM

that guy looked like he'd get robbed on the corner of flatbush and nostrand. lol. thats how thug he looked. ur a lil racist.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2009 9:54 AM

That thuggy black guy is non other than A.Boggie! I could see him dancing all the way from the back. He is amazing!! Go watch the new handsome furs video for I'm Confused: http://wolfparade.nonstuff.com

Handsome Furs set was short but great. Def enhanced by their "cigarette break." Ha... Iran was f-ing awful. Worst live band I've seen in a long time. I'm glad my gf convinced us to go wait in the bar rather than standing in the back whispering back and forth about how much Iran sucked.

Posted by BTW | March 9, 2009 10:08 AM

yea fantastic show, shitty opener
danced my ass off in the tiny space i had to do that in

Posted by sarah | March 9, 2009 10:25 AM

its weird everyone is hating on iran, "buddy" is one of my favorite songs in forever. guess they're bad live.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2009 10:36 AM

I saw Iran at Death By Audio a few weeks ago, and I wouldn't really say they were bad. They're just not very engaging. It did kind of seem like the whole live show thing was something Aaron was doing begrudgingly. Still, if you like the songs, you should enjoy the live show just fine.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2009 11:09 AM

as i said earlier in these comments, they performed the songs well, they just have no stage presence.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2009 11:15 AM

Iran songs sounded really great and full and rocking and hazy in all the right places. I think this is like their 3rd live show in 5 years, so I think they'll get there.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2009 12:20 PM

i have a feeling they wont...

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2009 12:36 PM

anyone see Tom Yaps there?

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2009 6:06 PM

Iran was the best part of the show. Weird line-up though, everything else was electronic. Who booked that? Whatever. I went for Iran, I left happy.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2009 7:57 PM

kids these days.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2009 10:29 PM

The new Handsome Furs album is brilliant!
