Metallica

Invading South By Southwest, Metallica attempted to pose as one of the hundreds of smaller bands there just hoping to get a record deal.

"We're a young band from Norway and we want to get signed," Metallica frontman James Hetfield told the audience at the heavy metal band's SXSW performance Friday night.

It was a widely expected but not officially announced show at a venue (Stubb's) that for a band like Metallica is downright minuscule, holding about 2,100 people. The band played for slightly more than an hour, performing both classics and, as Hetfield called it, "new stuff" off their 2008 album "Death Magnetic" -- a disc widely considered a return to form for the 28-year-old group.

But despite Hetfield's mock camouflage (and poor Norwegian accent), Metallica stood out on the SXSW landscape Friday. With more than 50 million albums sold, Metallica has probably outsold the other 1,900-plus bands at SXSW combined.

Droves of die-hard fans, catching wind of the rumors, lined up all day outside Stubb's, where Metallica 18-wheelers parked outside. [AP]

So the biggest (and most esteemed) indie music festival in the US hosts a surprise act that is a 50 million record selling band playing to a video game?

I guess this is the end of SXSW and the official death of the corporate music industry-

This is innovation? Wrong. This is slumming-

What will be the next indie rock fantasy festival? Pitchfork? Bumbershot? Rothbury?

This is the end of SXSW. Ugh.

Remember when Metallica played Lollapalooza back in '96? Didn't that festival start to fail after they played also?

Posted by Anonymous | March 21, 2009 3:09 PM

Does anyone know what their set list was?

Posted by noamjamski | March 21, 2009 3:20 PM

SXSW is not an indie music festival. While many think about it as a place for showcases, that is not it's main goal. SXSW is a music conference, not a place to showcase bands.

I can't decide whether 2:50 is the biggest troll I've ever seen or the biggest retard I've ever seen.

I have no interest in this band, but I think this is pretty neat. Would've been cooler if they could've kept it better under wraps.

2.50 you're way wrong. SXSW hasn't been cool for a few years. I understand why bands want/need to play there, but never understood the appeal from a fan's perspective, when the sets are short and you are surrounded by a bunch of industry trolls, and 3/4 of the audience are concerned about the next hot party to attend or annoying a true fan with constant blackberry and iphone texting. put your friggin phones down and enjoy the show already. or leave.

i am not a metallica apologist, but you pretty much can't shit on the band responsible for Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets and ...And Justice for All. IMHO metallica actually upped the coolness factor from a festival that lost its edge many years ago...

this young band from Norway sounds like a flatulent compendium of sub-Saxon metal cliches that would get laughed off the stage if they didn't have the Metallica name and image to hide behind.

Posted by Anonymous | March 21, 2009 7:18 PM

i've been attending SXSW for 12 years, and it ceased being an "unsigned band" discovery showcase about 5-6 years ago with the advent of label showcases, which means that by definition the bands playing are NOT unsigned. the SXSW of today is about networking, not discovering new acts like in the past (bummer). up until 5-6 years ago it was a small music conference with 3500 attendees- today it is more than double that number, and the worst part is half of the current attendees are not even in the industry- they come just for the vibe, to hang out, in other words, posers. whereas in the past we could see 10-12 different bands at 10 differnet venues in one evening, today we can't even get into the venues to see 3 bands because the venues are already full to capacity of posers. our $600 passes are pretty much worthless as a result.

SXSW is a victim of its own success.

^^

so you can't just be someone who wants to come and enjoy the vibe, hang out and watch good bands, in short, a fan to attend SXSW?

it would be better if it only industry types there?

sounds ideal

Posted by Anonymous | March 21, 2009 8:04 PM

let's not forget that SXSW started as an industry-only event, for industry people. it is still billed as an industry event, though they sell passes to anyone these days. this is my job, how i pay my mortgage, provide for my family and put my kids through school. if people want to come and hang out, fine, AS LONG AS i and everyone else can still get their job accomplished, and the way it is now, we can't.

but, as the industry changes , so goes SXSW. we all must adapt, one way or another. that's pretty much the bottom line, and my industry better realize that before it becomes obsolete (and it may be too late already.....)

Posted by Anonymous | March 21, 2009 8:16 PM

"so you can't just be someone who wants to come and enjoy the vibe, hang out and watch good bands, in short, a fan to attend SXSW?"

SXWS is not for you (no offense). SXSW is *not* a festival. I repeat: it is not a festival. It is an industry event. The same goes for CMJ. Must of the parties during SXSW and CMJ are really shows not officially associated with the event. You will notice that they don't put SXSW in their party's name. They are not allowed to.

Austin City Limits is for the fans. Besides, isn't it silly that someone from NYC would go to Austin just to see bands you can just see at home? I love Austin, but it's not the same during SXSW.

Posted by Anonymous | March 21, 2009 8:37 PM

hey anon 8:37 SXSW and all music festivals or conferences, like winter music conference next week, gives fans a chance to see many of the bands we see at home in a small amount of time, for a fraction of the price of going out each night to see a show...

its all about the party and the scene not necessarily about the music per se.

One of the best shows I've ever seen.

Metallica has sucked for years and I WAS a huge fan.

the difference between Metallica and most of the bands that play south by south west, is that people will care about Metallica in 4 months. and also none of those other bands wrote the song Creeping Death, IMO one of the best metal songs EVA! DONNNEE!! Now shut up!

I love my Velvet Underground, MBV, etc etc, but I also loved Metallica when I was 15. I saw them at Woodstock 94 and it rocked, and I would have LOVED to see the setlist they did at SXSW (regardless of whether I haven't paid attention to them since 'And Justice For All'.

Posted by Anonymous | March 22, 2009 2:40 PM

$600 passes isnt that the very definition of corporate excess? you know that money is coming out of the artists pockets, right? corporate music industry excesses are sort of sickening.

Posted by Anonymous | March 22, 2009 2:46 PM

God, everyone needs to stop complaining. I went to SxSW as a fan this year, and had a great time! I saw over 30 bands I really love in just 4 days, went to some cool parties with friends, and enjoyed the amazing weather and local vibe of Austin. If everyone would just lighten up a bit, and stop comparing "new" SxSW with "old" SxSW, perhaps they could see that the new incarnation is not that bad. I'm sorry that things have to change from the "cool" SxSW that happened over 10 years ago, but that's life. Things change. You just need to deal with it. We have a new generation running and enjoying SxSW now, so it's inevitably going to be different.

even metallica know how bad their music has sucked since master of puppets.

Posted by Anonymous | March 22, 2009 4:18 PM

they're metal gods because metal is the only genre complacent enough to tolerate sloths like them. that's the thing about metal that cracks me up, it's like the complacency is the whole point. once you stop recycling the same cliches, you don't count as metal any more... and metallica have always counted as metal, because they demand nothing of themselves and attract fans who demand even less.

Austin can have all the festivals it wants.. Its still Texas. I hate how it claims to be the live music capitol of america. Obviously Austin has never been to nyc.
I had to work in Austin for 6 months once and ya sure every night some garage blues band is playing at some tex-mex place, but i kept missing out on bands I liked that were playing in nyc and were never coming to austin.

Posted by nsfw | March 22, 2009 6:33 PM

Yeah, the live music capital slogan is bs. In Austin, you find nothing buy middle-aged blues guys, cover bands, and solo acoustic singer songwriter, and a little bit of Nashville country. Not much else musically, not even some good ol' outlaw country. That said, Austin is a great place.

I hate Metallica but anon 5:04 AM is right! Hearing all these indie posers put down bands that have been around for decades such as U2, Springsteen, Morrissey etc just makes me laugh! I love some newer bands (LCD, TV On The radio, Arcade Fire Etc..) but they cannot compare to the all time greats. Maybe someday but not yet.

Posted by Anonymous | March 22, 2009 10:53 PM

Whilst I do frequently listen to my breadfan vinyl...what is the point of these "new music" festivals if this is what can happen at them?

Suspending reality for the sake of this point, if AnR lamprey were actually able to sign and develop a quality artist, what are the chances any of them will be at the unsigned band showcase when this douchery is exploding at Stubbs?....After all, Stubbs is the best bet for coke under these circumstances. Why would a great unknown act bother to haul their shit to Austin and grapple with satan for parking, only to have any chance of making a scene stomped to death by the likes of fucking metallica?

I actually love many metallica records...but they just gave SXSW incurable dick cancer....maybe that's a good thing, I don't know.

All you lame assholes are jealous and would kill to be in a band like that. Get a fucking life. If you know it alls think you can be in a band and be as good if not better than them. Go ahead and try. You will undoubtably fail.

Posted by Anonymous | March 23, 2009 12:19 PM

I love these some of these hypocrites. Like Mr. "music industry veteran who was at the metallica show last night." You brag about how you've been coming to SXSW for 12 years and then bitch about how it has ceased to be about unsigned bands. Then you state that you saw Metallica here. You're laughable.

If you only want to come here to see unsigned bands there are plenty of opportunities to do so but if you're busy at the Metallica show for 90 minutes I'm sure you're going to miss out on some of those.

I've been attending SXSW for 13 years as a fan or I guess as you call it "a poser." I still have no problem getting into shows I want to see. You know why? Because I don't spend my time in lines to see shows with bands that everyone already knows about. I'll go see them later when I can see a full set. Why don't you do your due diligence and listen to the songs that SXSW provides and actually go look up some of the other lesser known bands. You can always see the established bands later. Do your job if that's what you're there for, but please, drop the holier than thou attitude b/c you know what, it's people like me and the other posers there who end up paying for your mortgage by going to shows and buying music. But more importantly we're the ones supporting these artists when dinosaurs like you decide they're not cool or hip anymore and we're still going to their shows and buying their merch. You're just a dude with a badge and a notepad and a crap attitude.

And to the trolls bashing Metallica and SXSW, don't you have anything better to do? They've both been around and they've both paid their dues. They aren't the same as they were 15 years ago. You have the choice to like them and show up or not. You have the right to like them or not. Either way, fine. We don't care. They don't care. Feel free to not show up. Both will get along fine without you and your crap attitude.

Also thanks BV and the rest of the bloggers/fans out there who are constantly listening for quality bands and sharing it with the rest of us. It's very much appreciated. And thanks for coming to our city and helping to make it a good time for everyone who actually loves music. See you next year.

This is a load of shyte! Out of the entire time I was at SXSW seeing music from 1pm-5am Wed thru Sat, I came cross only two venues that I had trouble getting into with the music badge. You got into Metallica, so obiviously the badge works. My sis said she went up to Metallica at Stubbs half way thru their set, and she may have waited in line for 2mins tops. The badges are still gold and get you in for sure. All the "posers" your talking about buy wristbands. And some "posers", like my self, volunteer to make this f'n' "industry event" work.
