Phish played 3 shows, 194 arrested, $1.2 million seized

Phish show - Hampton 2009 (karinihadalumpyhead)
Phish

Some Phish fans are leaving Hampton a little lighter than when they arrived for the band's weekend reunion.

Police said Monday they confiscated about $1.2 million in illegal drugs and more than $68,000 in cash from concertgoers. Authorities also arrested 194 Phish fans during the three-night celebration of the band's return to the stage after a nearly five-year absence.

Most of the arrests were for drug possession, use and distribution, police said.

Tourism officials had estimated 75,000 fans would be coming to the coastal Virginia city. Nearly 200 law enforcement officers worked the weekend event, with the Vermont-based band picking up the tab. [Yahoo]

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 10:20 AM

Brilliant sting operation, Phish. You fooled everyone, we all thought you were just broke.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 10:21 AM

that's about $17 confiscated in drugs and money per person, not really that much...

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 10:21 AM

if you can't do drugs at a phish show the terrorists have won.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 10:24 AM

Because police never use or deal drugs themselves.

Posted by drewo | March 10, 2009 10:25 AM

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 10:42 AM

That arena only holds 12,000 people. 3 nights. 75,000 people went?

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 10:43 AM

I'm not sure the Spin Doctors would sell out an arena...

Those shows were amazing.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 10:53 AM

"That arena only holds 12,000 people. 3 nights. 75,000 people went?"

A lot of people went w/o tix hoping to score some, others I'm sure just went to be there.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 10:53 AM

Did you guys listen to the recording of the shows? I thought they sounded tight but scared to let loose. Maybe over time they will get back in the groove and open up a little more.

It's cool see them four in a row again.

phish proved this weekend why they are so talented. as a big fan of indie bands, it was so refreshing to see raw musical talent deliver over three great shows. yes, some of the lyrics are silly, but if indie bands could be even 1/10th as good musically as phish, i would be a lot happier. they all need to practice a lot more!

Yawn

Awesome playing, great venue, and just a fantastic weekend. the boys really are back (unlike in 2002). while phish isn't for everyone, if you like it, you'll love it.

bv should ban the ONE PERSON making all the yaps comments.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 12:06 PM

Obviously inflated numbers to prove a point. Each cop confiscated over $6000 over three days??? Right.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 12:33 PM

There were not even close to 75,000 people there. About half the people had 3 day passes. so that means about 22,000 people max went to the shows combined. Yeah, there were probably an extra 2,000 to 4,000 people just wandering around and partying, but that's still in the range of 25,000 people total for the whole weekend.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 12:46 PM

Phish also picked up the $1.2 million tab to rid the area of the heavy patchouli and veggie burrito odor.

Posted by Adam W | March 10, 2009 12:50 PM

Why were they seizing cash? It's illegal to have cash?

Posted by naj | March 10, 2009 12:52 PM

thats funny. i made $40,000 that weekend dealing. what recession?

why focus on the drug headline? that is not news. i agree with 11:09 completely: "yes, some of the lyrics are silly, but if indie bands could be even 1/10th as good musically as phish, i would be a lot happier. they all need to practice a lot more!"

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 5:17 PM

$1.2 million in DRUGS, are you kidding me?

Did someone drive a semi-truck full of weed there and hang a sign saying "drugs for sale"?

These numbers are such police bull shit.

I doubt there were a lot of people doing coke or heroin, and last time i checked weed and acid were still pretty cheap.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 5:54 PM

No f'n way they confiscated that much sh*t. I saw almost ZERO police presence and ZERO crackdown on drinking, partying, etc. BS. Of course, I was a lot snob and stuck to the private massage lot.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2009 6:40 PM

We paid for the police presence?!?! Crap, we thought we were paying for presents for Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland!
