PJ Harvey & John Parish played Irving Plaza (pics), the El Rey (setlist), Leno (video) & KCRW (video)
photos by Jacob Blickenstaff

"PJ Harvey's previous album with John Parish was 1998's Dance Hall at Louise Point, but the 12-year wait was worth it. Harvey's brutal doctrine - that nothing should sound like anything either of them has done before - has produced a thrilling, boundless work. The songs are riots of changing themes and multiple musical personalities. Black Hearted Love, in which Parish's granite riff fuels one of Harvey's best ever rockers, finds two lovers frolicking in the abyss, while Pointless, Passionless chillingly catalogues a stone-cold relationship. April, with its snail's pace, is plaintive and purifying. Harvey's vocals range from animalistic shrieks to haunted narratives, as she depicts everything from the gleeful humiliation of a cuckold ("lily-livered balls!") to the days that follow a death. It all hangs together brilliantly, suggesting the mutual understanding of two artists at the peak of their powers." [Guardian]PJ Harvey and John Parish have now finished up a short U.S. tour that included a stop at SXSW (pic, setlist), a stop on Leno (Hulu video), a visit to KCRW (video), a show in LA (setlist below), and a show at Irving Plaza in NYC last night (3/26). More pictures from that last one, below...

Why can't you use a cellphone at the Irving Plaza box office?
(Memo to The Guardian: Their previous album was "Dance Hall at LOUSE Point.")

The photos are from so far away because increasingly that is the only place the army of PR people, publicists, label people, tour managers, security guards and other helpful sorts will let you work. The only shooting area available was a 2x3 foot roped off area at the rear of the balcony that one had to be 'escorted' to. Shooting was permitted only during the 3th and 7th songs (or something silly like that). PJ's peeps got rid of the pit for the show. Bowls of red m&m's were placed precisely at 2 cubit intervals at the bars.(taking license here) Of course every knucklehead with a point and shoot had one in her face the entire time.

@jacob: Good for them! It keeps the pros from annoying the audience.

@jacob: I am one of your knuckleheads with a point and shoot.

Though I tried to savor the performance as much as possible without bringing out my camera, I did get some good (closer) shots, including a video of "The Soldier."
So happy with the new stuff!

I saw PJ and JP on Jay Leno the other night. It was as dreadful as it sounds.

Yeah, that performance was pretty bad, but that song sounded great last night..

I will admit that half of the problem is there are plenty of annoying photographers out there, in photographing bigger shows, the line between photog and paparazzi gets very thin. the pit/3 song rule = the red carpet.
But in an Ideal World, I would think musicians would prefer an observant, creative photographer respectfully making killer pictures that serve history rather than a half observant fan jumping around like a ninny, beer in a plastic cup sloshing in one hand, camera or iphone held arm's length in the other.

@jacob the elite camera weilding "artist"
did i get beer on your dress? sorry, i must've been too busy enjoying myself at the rock show to notice.
get a better zoom lens and stop crying.

wow, i'm glad i saved my money & passed on this show. not a single bonafide pj harvey song-- just as i had suspected. i love her & all, but her stuff with john parish doesn't hold a candle to her regular solo material. (the beacon show last year was still one of my favorite gigs-- ever!)

I. WILL. NOT!

Anno 6:03. You missed a great show. Have you listened to their new cd? It's very good. I have seen her many times. I do not need to hear her drag out all of her hits again. I enjoy hearing something new. As for pictures, if I were an artist I would just be happy people still want to take my picture. That being said there are a lot of idiot phographers out there. As for their appearence on Leno, maybe you have lousy TV speakers. I thought they were great. BHL did of course sound better last night.

12:22: I couldn't have listened to the new CD since it's not out yet. I don't do the downloading leaked albums bullshit. I'll go out Tuesday & buy it.

The singers are very useful to the entertainment and for the songs purpose .So those should be the respectable. The only shooting area available was a 2x3 foot roped off area at the rear of the balcony that one had to be 'escorted' to. Shooting was permitted only during the 3th and 7th songs (or something silly like that). PJ's peeps got rid of the pit for the show....
