John Darnielle & John Vanderslice in Somerville, MA - March 25, 2009 (bradsearles)
John Darnielle and John Vanderslice

KEXP: I hear you're also recording an album with John Darnielle?

John Vanderslice: Yes, we're doing a "comedian's record," and and that will be out by the time we go on tour in March.

KEXP: What does that mean? Will it be spoken word?

JV: Oh! No! sorry. (laughs) That's the band name [The Comedians]. It would be funny if it were an actual comedian's record, though it might be kind of disappointing, but John is very funny.

That interview was posted in early February, and I don't think John and John actually got the album out before the tour, but they have been performing songs from it at shows - including at the one they played on March 27th at the Society for Ethical Culture in NYC (part of the Wordless Music series). Check out the setlist below.

The Vanderslice/Mtn Goats tour continues through April 6th. John Vanderslice's new album Romanian Names will be released by Dead Oceans on May 19th, and that's right around the time JV will hit the road again, except this time with a full band:

The line up for the May [John Vanderslice] tour is:
JV: Guitar, Vocals
Ian Bjornstad: Wurlitzer, Moog
Matthias Bossi: Drums
Sylvain Carton: Guitar
James Riotto: Bass
All of the dates and details of that tour haven't been announced yet, but there will be a June 12th Brooklyn show at Music Hall of Williamsburg which will also be the BrooklynVegan showcase at the NorthSide Festival (more artists to be announced soon). $15 general admission tickets will go on sale this Friday at noon, and a certain amount of tickets will be reserved for Northside badge holders (details on that to also be announced soon).

A partial list of venues participating in the Northside Festival this year are Music Hall of Williamsburg, Europa, Studio B, Union Pool, Radegast Hall & Biergarten, Zebulon, Public Assembly, Monkeytown, Pete's Candy Store, Spike Hill, Glasslands, The Cameo, Brooklyn Bowl, Bar Matchless, The Knitting Factory, Rose Live Music, The Shank, Black Betty, Berry Park.

According to JD (from the Somerville stage), that tour EP will be ready "four days before the tour ends", so anyone at the 4/2 show should keep their eyes open at the merch table.

Hey, thanks for the photo credit/link, much appreciated. I'll be sharing up a recording of the Somerville show on the Almanac on Monday.

Ya, 2:29 a.m. is spot on: The Mountain Goats are one of those johnny-cum-lately's when it comes to this music shit. Band Of Horses have been pumping out album after awesome album for like 15 years at this point. I think this Darnielle guy is hitting the sophomore slump.

Posted by anonymouse | April 1, 2009 9:42 AM

9:42's got it right. As soon as Darnielle puts out a great sophomore effort to follow up on Heretic Pride, I'll put them in the class of Band of Horses.

Totally. Mountain Goats are SUCH a Band of Horses ripoff. Darnielle is SUCH a major dork. Just look at his dorky glasses. And he's not wearing skinny jeans! How does he expect to make it in the music business?

Wake me when they've stood the test of time like Band of Horses.

lol @ "pumping album after awesome album for 15 years"

fuck the Mountain Goats.

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 10:26 AM

Holy TROLLS! man. you guyz almost had me. that being said. darnielle totally looks like K.D. Lang. and i like that about him.

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 10:38 AM

Another thing about the Mountain Goats? HORRIBLE storytellers. John Darnielle makes the frontman of Passion Pit look like Randy Newman. Band of Horses is the kind of band that might tell you stories around a campfire, and they'd be so good you'd be up all night and be totally surprised when the sun came up, just like, "Wow, those stories were so good that I stayed up all night until the sun came up."

Fuck the Mountain Goats.

They didn't end up releasing the Comedians album before the tour, but performed several songs at each show.

Vanderslice was also supposed to play Bowery Ballroom that same week of June, but it got pulled down from the Bowery site. Was that show moved to Music Hall or will there be two?

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 2:14 PM

Man, if your show is $15 I can only imagine how much a 4 day pass will be
