The Grates played SXSW & Mercury Lounge in NYC (pics)
photos by Tim Griffin

"I didn't know much about this Australian group until I caught Saturday's set, but lead singer Patience Hodgson blew me away with her enthusiasm. At one point, she jumped off the stage and onto the floor, told everyone to clear a space and began twirling a ribbon, gymnastics-style. A hardcore fan suddenly appeared, dressed in a leotard, and joined her for a spontaneous dance. These are the SXSW moments you dream of." [Whitney Matheson @ USA Today]The Grates played their first of three post-SXSW, NYC shows at Mercury Lounge on Monday night (3/23, with Sky Larkin). Next up is Pianos with Micachu tonight (3/25), and the The Aussie BBQ at the Bell House in Brooklyn on Thursday that The Drones, Youth Group and others are also playing.

It really annoys me how the commenters always talk shit about ANY girl who is pictured and her looks but then dont say shit about all of the dudes on here - most of which are out of shape/hairy/probably smelly and generally goofy looking. Get over yourselves! You wish these babes would go for you.

Stanley – most dudes aren't using their sex appeal to sell records.

She sure is getting her money's worth outta those keyboard socks. They must be pretty smelly by now.

Stanley: Nice try but that tactic will never get you laid.

How do you know she doesn't buy them in bulk because she likes them so much, blackhat?

do physically beautiful people belong in rock and roll?
do those beautiful people have anything worthwhile to write about?
these are the questions i find myself asking.
sometimes the line between the rock stage and the fashion runway is depressingly vague.
