The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Let's Wrestle & Knight School @ the Bell House in Brooklyn - pics

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart played the Bell House in Brooklyn on Friday, March 13th, with Let's Wrestle and Knight School.
Here the group played most of its album, faithfully rendered and with minimal flash. When not wringing notes out of his guitar, Mr. Berman delivered his words solemnly, helpfully leavened by Ms. Wang, whose high harmonies, even when faintly whispered, added necessary texture. So did her synthesizer, which was smooth and glassy on "Young Adult Friction" and needling and whiny on "The Tenure Itch." [NY Times]This week, Pains visits SXSW, playing a bunch of shows including the BV day party on Thursday, Opal Divine's Freehouse on Thursday night and Emo's Jr on Friday - before touring at the end of April. The band has scheduled two NYC shows, so far, this summer: May 12th at the Bowery Ballroom (on sale now) and June 18th at Cake Shop with Crystal Stilts.
Let's Wrestle, whose NYC visit included a MHOW show (3/10) with Black Lips, are also in Austin, playing Thursday at Wave Rooftop, Saturday at Volume, and other places.

Ms. Wang, whose high harmonies, even when faintly whispered like a queef expelled from a vadge during yoga, and all the hipsters stroked their beards and felt nothing but the smug satisfaction that a camera flashed, a blog rolled, and they were there.

Why even bother having that bassist player? He was worthless, just pumping out straight-eight notes, only the root of course. The keyboardist could have played these notes, it's not like her parts are all that complicated. Plus he had no stage presence.

Hating everything to avoid ever being judged yourself. The hipster psychology, plain and simple.
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2009 8:57 AM
Personally, don't hate everything. I just don't particularly care for Pains of Being Pure At Heart live. Good CD though.
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2009 9:29 AM
music is supposed to be judged and criticized, moron. ^
that being said, they're pretty boring live. ok on cd. meh

You might want to mention that the Pains of Being Pure at Heart will be on Last Call with Carson Daly on April 1st. They also play Spaceland in LA on the same day.

I miss the days when people in bands looked like they were in a band. Snoozefest.

anon 9:31 - worst comment ever posted to any message board ever, in the history of everything. you - YOU - are the reason that everything sucks. "meh." man, FUCK your "meh" attitude. there is no room for a "meh" attitude anymore. no goddamn room. get over that. for the sake of your future happiness and engagement with the world.

This blog is awesome.
You find a band that a few people think are pretty good. People start liking said band. Word starts getting around. More people start liking said band. Websites people read start posting good reviews. Said band becomes more popular. Their shows become bigger and sell out faster. Then people start posting about why they hate said band.
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2009 11:32 AM
it seems pretty common for bands who rapidly gain popularity to take awhile to adjust to playing bigger shows.
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2009 11:55 AM
"Then people start posting about why they hate said band." No, I always thought they were a bad rip-off of hundreds of 90's shoegaze bands nobody cared about back then.
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2009 12:06 PM
I was not at this show, but have seen them before...I like them a lot.
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2009 12:23 PM
Do take photos of Kurt Feldman (the drummer) next time. He is gawgous.

"man, FUCK your 'meh' attitude. there is no room for a 'meh' attitude anymore. no goddamn room."
You might say the same to the band.
I mean, what are they doing? It's shimmery indie-pop with an eighties feel, propulsive and precise musically but lacking in electricity, inventiveness, and any true sense of purpose. While 'meh' is a cheap substitute for having an actual argument, I don't think it's an unfair response to what the band is doing. I don't hate them, but I don't find them especially inspiring or moving. Bands that they're emulating have written much better songs and performed them with more passion. Apparently though, there is room for this. I just hate watching indie rock become the new Salieri.

Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2009 5:37 PM
also, if we eliminated every bass player who played root eighth notes, a lot of classic records you people revere would have no low end
Posted by Anonymous | March 18, 2009 5:42 PM
Uh, Salieri ?
