U2 @ Fordham

When Courtney Collyer elected to attend Fordham last spring, she didn't expect to land at a powerhouse. The Lady Rams had finished fifth at the 2008 Atlantic 10 championships.

So Collyer, a Staten Island product and St. Joseph by-the-Sea HS standout, was surprised to see herself powering Fordham to second place - the school's best-ever finish - at last month's A-10 championships in Buffalo. [Daily News]

The mystery (was it a mystery?) of where U2 were going to play for Good Morning America today, and how they were going to get from the TV show taping to Fordham University with enough time to play both shows in one morning, has been solved. They were the same show! (duh).

As you can tell by the pics, it happened early this morning - between 8 & 9 AM. U2 played three songs followed by a break and interview followed by three more songs. The audience was comprised of a packed lawn full of bundled up college students.

U2's fifth of five Letterman residency shows airs tonight (3/6) (though it was taped on Monday). The Fordham/GMA setlist and more pictures below...

How about Batali? Can we get some info on the magic he was undoubtedly working?

thanks for posting these pics!! liking their new album so far...

Posted by Termeh Mazhari | March 6, 2009 11:24 AM

I went to Fordham and we got...Ziggy Marley one year.

Posted by Anonymous | March 6, 2009 11:28 AM

how come they didn't play at the borough manhattan community college (bmcc)???

maybe those fordham students won't mind paying $30k in tuition this year.

Posted by Anonymous | March 6, 2009 11:30 AM

So sick of U2. Go back to Holland please

Posted by Anonymous | March 6, 2009 11:33 AM

Batali! of course. Even for U2 that craft service table was way too elaborate.

"bah, what a shitty set-list.

wasnt this free?

Posted by Anonymous | March 6, 2009 11:41 AM

free or not, its still a shitty set-list.

at least throw out one bone of an oldie to balance out all the year 2000 plus yuckness.

Posted by cranky | March 6, 2009 11:45 AM

Hey, don't forget that The Spin Doctors played there too...Ouch! I believe I even saw Squeeze & The Soup Dragons one year as well. Definitely moe. What about Blind Melon, The Meat Puppets & Alice Donut in the gym? The real cool thing about being @ Fordham was the comedians that I got to see back in the early '90s. Wednesday nights for free in the basement cafeteria (Ramskellar??) Dave Chapelle, Jon Stewart, Norm MacDonald, Marc Maron. Good stuff.

Posted by Anonymous | March 6, 2009 11:48 AM

Great live impromptu free show. Crankies should stop whining about how much better the old days were. They can't keep redoing Bad or SBS forever, can they? Boots is lame but whatever. Keep listening, keep learning.

That dude in the 7th pic down is stoked to be grubbing & watching U2.

Posted by Anonymous | March 6, 2009 1:39 PM

Only time I saw U2 was exactly 28 years ago - yesterday. They were touring for "Boy"; my buddie Steve got some last minute comps for their show at JB Scott's in Albany. We loaded up my Ford Fairlane with gas and a mini-keg of Dinkel Acker, and one empty keg and a flat tire later, got to the club. The band were already into their 3rd song; during the encores they played the 2 songs we missed again, (which may have included "Eleven O'Clock Tick Tock") because they had exhausted their set list!

I hope the Fordham kids enjoyed today's treat.

No actually the people saying it was going to be a bullshit short tv performance and not a full set were correct.

You, those idiot posters "Charles" and "Fordham" and the other anons were SO wrong.

To call this performance epic is pretty fucking stupid. Then again when you typed "too all you",it is pretty clear that a dimwit was at the keyboard. Obvious as well is that the "best thing to happen at Fordham" is sadly not giving their students a first class education.

it amazes me that u2 can put out such shitty music and that they still get radio play. saying that because u2 sells out stadiums means NOTHING. country musicians sell out stadiums. NICKLEBACK sells out stadiums. filling seats does not equal quality

filling seats does equal longevity and relevance, which in U2's case, is greater than that of most crappy bands hailed on this site

f U2, let's all grow beards, live in williamsburg and listen to dan deacon! yay!

Posted by Anonymous | March 6, 2009 6:02 PM

the last few posts on here defending u2 are obviously all written by the same person. blah blah blah. us stupid hipsters. know what's stupid? a troll like you who thinks u2 are actually relivant at this stage in the game because they "sell out stadiums" or whatever your point is.

please continue to keep tonguing bono's anus.

we're all ears.

Posted by just some dumb hipster | March 6, 2009 6:29 PM

Not to bash U2, but along the lines of teh argument above, I was watching Patton Oswalt unmercifully trash pretty much every numetal band that exists, and when he got to Linkin Park, some meathead in the audience decided he would stick up for them by yelling out --
"Yeah well they fill up stadiums though!"
to which Patton replied
"You wanna know what they fill stadiums with? - stupid fans and shitty music!"

Posted by Anonymous | March 6, 2009 6:48 PM

Someone took some good pictures. I wonder if GMA knew U2 was going to play songs after Beautiful Day...on tv Bono said let's play one more and it cut to a commercial. I thought the lads did well considering it was 8 am and I like the new album.

Lots of haters out their.

Boots isn't a great song, but the performance was awesome. Really, I think their music is much better live.

But maybe that's just because we were still drunk from the night before, and were up since 4 AM waiting. Plus it was free...

To those who take a few typographical errors to mean that Fordham does not provide its students with a quality education, allow me to remind you that our 43rd president has a B.A. from Yale. Surely you would not also extrapolate from his numerous linguistic blunders that Elis receive inferior instruction? (He also has an MBA from Harvard, but everyone knows business school is a joke.)

Posted by Bronze Medals | March 6, 2009 10:33 PM

To all you haters that think you're so cool because you whack off to pitchfork and toss some stanky ass salad in front of a bodega on bedford, looks like you're eating your own poop sandwich now. U2 silences all the haters with this performance. There's only a few good indie bands (yeasayer, of montreal, a few others) - the rest are boring hacks eating corn on the cob dipped in ass chocolate. In 2 years you are going to forget 94% of the music you're listening to now. U2's music will be around long after any of us here are gone. They occupy the same realm of untouchable greatness as The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Clash, Pink Floyd.

Some of you h8ters feed into such a bullshit lifestyle with suckass TV ON THE RADIO shit performances on SNL lol they SUCK. The horns were off key, the singer sounded like he was choking up spooge and that other freak couldn't play anything! he just danced around worse than Fletch from Depeche Mode.

Most indie bands will never be truly great because they shut out the world. they become isolated and a bunch of indie snobs. Just because something is liked by so many people doesn't mean it's crap. Most of you shitheads didn't know who the fuck Bruce Springsteen was until every wanker band from the Killers to semi-ok Arcade Fire started drinking his piss. Now all you indie 'alt' sheep think he's a god.

So, keep talking shit and painting your face with your mom's yeast infection while you stick power tools up each others asses and talk about how deep the new Death Cab for Hootie & The Blow Me album is.

Hey Bronze Medal(perfect name btw because you are certainly nowhere near a gold winner)
Those seperate quotes above yours are not typos. Those are just the marks of a complete idiot. And this lovely quip of yours "that Elis receive inferior instruction?" shows a pretty clear lack of understanding of proper english.

So yeah I guess I would say that Fordham is an institute of barely higher education.

Oh and 12:43 that was hilarious. I mean you are a moron but that was still funny to read.

We need a bizarro-Quantum Leap TV show where Scott Bakula goes back in time and convinces people at the height of their talent to kill themselves rather than live on and sully their reputation and put out bad product.

One episode could be Bakula going back to 1994 and convincing U2 to do themselves in.

Other episodes would include anyone who rocked it in the 1970s and put out music in the 80s.

@ Anonymous 4:51 p.m.

Firstly, although what I call myself is ultimately insignificant, a bronze medal is not "nowhere near a gold winner;" in fact, it's rather close -- separated only by the silver medal. For example, in the women's 50 metre freestyle final at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the difference between the gold medal and the bronze medal was just .11 of a second. Just saying.

On typos: "too all of you" is wrong by one letter, and so I would say there is a reasonable chance that the writer simply mistyped. "Lots of haters out their" is, I will admit, likely not a mere slip of the finger. However, it is still an easy mistake to make, and I am sure that Boston Guy would have corrected it if he had reread his comment -- just as you undoubtedly would have corrected your error in attempting to write the word "separate" and coming valiantly close with "seperate." But don't worry, I will not assume that whatever university you attend or attended is an "institute of barely higher education." Because that would be a stupid, small-minded thing to do.

As to that sentence of mine which you single out for ridicule, I must say that I do not see a problem with it. Do you know that the nickname "Eli" is used to refer to a Yale student? Perhaps that term is the source of your misunderstanding. Another tip: maybe you would understand the sentence if you removed from it the clause "from his numerous linguistic blunders."

The point I was making was that, from the faulty logic that you, among others, employ

A: George W. Bush has used improper English in a public forum at least once
and
B: George W. Bush completed his undergraduate degree at Yale College
would imply
C: Yale is an "institute of barely higher learning"

A non sequitur, to be sure, whether applied to Yale in this regard or to Fordham based on students' comments on, of all things, a Brooklyn Vegan post.

I'd don't get why people are always saying that fordham gets shitty music. Sure, the spring weekend bands are usually somewhat shitty but in my 4 yrs here we've had both the roots and ghostface (with the secret machines which wasn't too bad at all) play spring weekend which was pretty cool. we've also gotten to see immortal technique, matt & kim, the action painter, other passengers, david bazan, thao nguyen, xiu xiu, woods, the death set, the hood internet, maps & atlases just last week, peter and the wolf, not to mention countless shows by the shivers, a bunch others I probably don't remember and a few really good comedians.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2009 7:55 PM

I agree, Fordham has great music. I was at the Other Passengers/Action Painters show, Matt & Kim etc. It beats going downtown on a Saturday.

Every one knows that men's life seems to be high priced, however some people require cash for different things and not every one gets big sums money. Thus to get fast mortgage loans and just bank loan will be a correct solution.
