WAVVES / These are Powers
WAVVES
These Are Powers

Baltimore City Paper: How'd your first NYC and European shows go? Do you think you were received well?
Nathan Williams: Really well! Everything has been super fun. Very positive vibe.

CP: Tell me a bit about how Wavves started, and how you arrived at the name.
NW: Me and my friend Andrew kind of came up with the name together, kind of a joke on how I was pretty afraid of the ocean. Wavves started in my room-just fucking around.

WAVVES play their third of three NYC shows on this tour, tonight (3/29) at Mercury Lounge in Manhattan. Last night (Sunday) was Cake Shop and the night before that (Saturday) was Market Hotel. All three NYC shows are/were with Vampire Hands. These are Powers were also on the bill at Market Hotel, and that's where the pictures in this post were taken. More of them below...

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 3:42 PM

will i be cool too if i dis waaves?

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 3:51 PM

WAVVES is the most overrated thing EVER!

Definitely a million other people doing better and more creative things musically than that guy!

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 3:54 PM

no, yr not cool too is you diss on wavves-
only we can
wavves sucks cokks

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 4:01 PM

I like wavves.
thank you, Mr. Wavves for playing and stuff

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 4:01 PM

style over substance...again.

at best: an ariel pink wannabe

at worst: the diy ryan cabrera

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 4:07 PM

this show was fucking awesome.

the naysayers are just jealous bitches

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 4:09 PM

I hate to join the ranks of BV haters but Wavves is down right awful. I can barely tolerate the 30 second clips on itunes.

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 4:10 PM

definitely a fun show. these are powers are so fun live! wweeeee

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 4:11 PM

was it like, 95 degrees in there?

wavves is fun. fun, catchy, scratchy songs. you guys should just relax and move on.

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 4:14 PM

I can't wait to hate Wavves tonight!

Posted by TWB | March 30, 2009 4:18 PM

wavves was pretty awesome. It is what it is.

i was at the bar and Mr. wavves came up to get a drink and was carded. dude looks like hes 16

Posted by JAKE | March 30, 2009 4:25 PM

you justify calling a band down right awful from listening to 30 second clips?

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 4:27 PM

shitheads can say whatever bullshit negative crap they want to on the internet, particularly on BV comments, but who cares? Everyone knows you limpdicks are know-nothing sheep anyway.

fact is, "So Bored" or "No Hope Kids" are instant classics and everybody who hears Wavves responds to it. The band is going places because those songs are fucking awesome.

Same goes for Vivian Girls, who you losers also pan. You won't find two bands that have broken out in the last year that are actually listened to more. The proof is right there, try Soulseeking either band, you'll have no trouble. Everybody in the indie punk universe has these bands in their itunes. Why? because they're fucking good and people respond to it.

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 4:28 PM

its too bad that these things can't pop up and just be fun, organic developments. people stop reacting to the music and start judging whether the hype is justified, which isn't fair.

i mean, not liking the wavves isn't really a big deal, but freaking out and flooding a blog post about how atrociously terrible they are because a lot of people in your neighborhood are enjoying it "too much" just sucks.

he's not reinventing the wheel, and if you've read interviews, he's clearly aware of this. sounds like he's just having fun, making records.

there are bigger fish to fry, i think. but i can see this internet hype process spitting him out within the next three months, after the SNL appearance. ha.

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 4:39 PM

"fact is, "So Bored" or "No Hope Kids" are instant classics"

you have a warped sense of what makes a classic

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 4:56 PM

but what if Wavves really does just suck???

I'm fairly positive he's just not very good at making music, or singing for that matter.

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 4:57 PM

Wavves are indeed corny as hell. Just cause you say you're influenced by Pavement, doesn't mean you're any good. And, just cause Pitchfork says you're good, probably means you suck!

No Age does indeed do it better.

And, go listen to the new Obits to see how it should be done.

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 5:03 PM

"i was at the bar and Mr. wavves came up to get a drink and was carded. dude looks like hes 16"

Wait a sec.

You can get 'carded' at Market Hotel!?

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 5:16 PM

nooo, i was at the cake shop show

Posted by JAKE | March 30, 2009 5:23 PM

>>Everybody in the indie punk universe has these bands in their itunes.>>

Again, "indie" is not a style of music, it's a way of doing business that predates the fucking internet, Myspace, and all that shit. Stop using it as a genre. You sound like a clueless fool.

you are witness to the ultimate in music snobbery. douche chills.

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 5:30 PM

It was so fucking hot at that show! These Are Powers are THE BEST.

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 5:33 PM

y'all seem "so bored". he. he.

Posted by sloweducation | March 30, 2009 5:38 PM

"but what if Wavves really does just suck???

I'm fairly positive he's just not very good at making music, or singing for that matter."

I'm fairly positive he's very good at music, and that his singing is perfectly in line with the rest of his music.

See? Isn't this SUPER DUPER FUN!?!

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 5:39 PM

WOW...brooklyn seems pretty chill....

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 5:45 PM

Hang on....I'm soulseeking. Nope, didn't work, the Vivian Girls still suck.

Posted by TWB | March 30, 2009 5:48 PM

I'm not sure what's funnier, people complaining about the hype over an artist who is opening a show at Mercury Lounge (which isn't sold out) or the adamant defenses. Either way it's great stuff and I plan on enjoying the show tonight.

VAMPIRE HANDS.. GO HOME.

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 5:59 PM

vampire hands were the best band of the night!

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 6:55 PM

Posted by pauly blunts | March 30, 2009 7:26 PM

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 10:22 PM

wavves is the new jay reatard

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 10:25 PM

Vampire Hands was fucking awful and not in a good way. Wavves was good but too much down time between songs---didn't build on the momentum.

Posted by TWB | March 30, 2009 10:30 PM

good god, hipster douches abound

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 11:00 PM

"its too bad that these things can't pop up and just be fun, organic developments. people stop reacting to the music and start judging whether the hype is justified, which isn't fair."

what an original insight! i thought you were dead, derrida!!

i'll give you an organic development: wavves fucking blows regardless of context because their music lacks creativity, talent, and ambition, and is another useless expression of bourgeois apathy.

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 11:24 PM

waves looks like a lesbian

Posted by Anonymous | March 30, 2009 11:51 PM

Vampire Hands are entirely worth your time, if anyone is wondering. If you don't like Wavves, that's great. Now get on with your own life. Make your own music. Make your own art if you so choose. But please stop giving Brooklyn such a bad name. Maybe a Hipster is a would-be artist, simply afraid to try. So they become a well dressed asshole, out of bitterness and self-contempt. Indistinguishable from any other yuppie element save for their minimal bank account. Have fun with all this. It will end for you sooner than later.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 12:11 AM

boy in the vest i want you!

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 12:53 AM

lol at everyone being surprised that market hotel was 5000 degrees. that place is a fucking oven. I like nathanWavves, he doesn't take himself seriously, just makes fun music, is a nice guy and is riding the "wavve" so to speak. I think he does "do it better" ('it' being 90s lo-fi punk revival?) than no age because unlike no age he isn't an asshole that needs a reality check. Gotta say though, Both Wavves and No Age are fun live, and for the most part have their shit together.

Please keep fighting yawl.

Thanks.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 9:07 AM

^^

"Yawl"? Is that like a Norwegian death metal band or something...'cause it sure as shit ain't the correct spelling of "y'all", you phuquen moran.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 10:11 AM

The real news: These Are Powers. What a great band!

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 10:14 AM

brooklyn isn't for pussies

Posted by anonymous | March 31, 2009 10:48 AM

What a precious looking group of kittens that crowd is.
I am glad I don't live in Brooklyn or I'd be put up in the bell tower.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 11:36 AM

if you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen...

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 12:52 PM

Market Hotel was perfectly comfortable on Saturday night actaully.

But good of you to telegraph to all of us what a know-nothing blowhard you are, 2:19. Be what you are, I like to say!

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 1:17 PM

too many cooks spoil the broth...

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 1:22 PM

"i'll give you an organic development: wavves fucking blows regardless of context because their music lacks creativity, talent, and ambition, and is another useless expression of bourgeois apathy."

As opposed to an indie band who takes themselves way too seriously?...a la Arcade Fire?...I'll take apathy.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 1:34 PM

wavves is irreverent and simple and is getting angsty. it's also ctahcy as fuck.

right there that's already more to say than most of your bland indie rock hereoes of today.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 1:46 PM

fun fun fun, wavves is fun. i like fun. yay. fun.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 1:55 PM

this Wavves guy is like Weezer. you hate him today because he appeals to too may people, but in 10 years you'll sing along to his first couple of records in the car and with your drunk friends and you'll call him a genius.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 1:56 PM

1:56, I think you have that backwards

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 2:11 PM

obviously you can judge the quality of music through the 30 clips. If I can't get through those, how the fuck would I get through a whole album. This music is garbage. So yah! The I only like this band b/c its classified hipster can suck me off.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 2:48 PM

wavves is one of the few bands from the past year that you can put on on loud on the stereo and people will walk up to you and ask what it is.

the shit resonates.

why do you think it's blown up so fast?

you haters are delusional.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 2:55 PM

1:56 listens to weezer while driving drunk. therefore wavves is great.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 3:06 PM

wait wait wait, are you idiots trying to claim that early Weezer isn't fucking amazing?

here on planet earth, we acknowledge phenomenal first records.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 3:09 PM

First AND second records 3:09! I totally agree.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 4:24 PM

true dat. and the video with the muppets is priceless.

Posted by Anonymous | March 31, 2009 4:47 PM

brooklyn isn't for pussies

Posted by anonymous | March 31, 2009 10:48 AM

hahahaha, yeah, Brooklyn is a place for people who lived in the midwest to "move on up" and act like they think the midwest is full of idiots.

Vampire Hands were easily the best band of the night. Most of you are just mad that bands from Brooklyn aren't this good.

Posted by anonymous | April 1, 2009 12:09 AM

wavves is nothing like weezer. the rivers cuomo of 1994/96 could actually write songs and play guitar. go hype him on your blog you delusional nitwit.

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 12:55 AM

word up!

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 6:31 AM

vampire weekend

vampire hands

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 9:45 AM

wavves would sound better if the knew how to control the trim in their recordings

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 12:03 PM

vampire hands was ok. nothing special. seemed like nice dudes.

wavves writes super catchy songs that talk about shit people can relate to. get your head out of your ass you knee jerk contrarian know nothings. this guy's shit speaks, that's why it's gotten son popular so fast. duh!

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 12:05 PM

12:03 don't get it at all!

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 12:15 PM

epic hater thread is a brooklyvegan tradition!!!

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 12:28 PM

"this Wavves guy is like Weezer. you hate him today because he appeals to too may people, but in 10 years you'll sing along to his first couple of records in the car and with your drunk friends and you'll call him a genius."

I can promise you nobody will be singing Wavves in 10 years. I'd bet my life on it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 12:29 PM

get ready to die motherfucker

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 12:38 PM

hi guys,

just thought i'd thank you for your criticism, good or bad. i'm just learning my craft and appreciate feedback from the most literate segment of population, who happen to be my target audience. i am going to discuss this with my record company representative at the dinner tonight and see how we can collectively increase your level enjoyment and entertainment at my shows. i was told before and realize now how unfortunate it is that i don't live in brooklyn. some of the things i do are lame, i guess, but i'm in it for a long ride and will learn in the process. thanks again,

yours nathane

Posted by nathane wavves | April 1, 2009 1:30 PM

vampire hands sucked

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 1:47 PM

i love wavves.
i'll be singing so bored and weed demon.
fuck ten years, i'll be singing them in 20.

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 1:54 PM

"As opposed to an indie band who takes themselves way too seriously?...a la Arcade Fire?...I'll take apathy. "

yeah, god forbid art should try to tackle things other than getting high and fucking.

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 6:35 PM

i've been to a ton of shows at market and the crowd is very often way more diverse and interesting than these photos suggest.

if that's the really wavves dude posting up there, he should stop dissing this mythical segment of pretentious brooklyn hipsters who hate his music, because they actually seem to be the only ones showing up to his shows.

Posted by Anonymous | April 1, 2009 6:41 PM

arcde fire = art to you? you're hilarious

and to the guy who actually thinks that it was really Nathan Wavves was posting above... you're a fucking fool

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2009 1:57 PM

market hotel is a fire hazard

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2009 2:16 PM

If you don't like Wavves.. Why the fuck are you commenting here? Get off this string and say things about bands that you like. OR JUST GO AHEAD AND MAKE MUSIC THAT PEOPLE GIVE A SHIT ABOUT! LET'S SEE IF PEOPLE COMMENT ABOUT YOUR SHIT LIKE WILD BASTARDS!

Posted by balls of tard | April 2, 2009 11:20 PM

your mom is a fat bitch hazard

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2009 2:24 AM

I find it disconcerting that Wavves is receiving so much positive press and free promotion from the prominent "indie" blog-sphere. I typed in "Wavves suck" in google and found my way to this pretentious whore of a site. I think the blog-sphere has conspired to conduct an experiment to see just how addicted to their hype and recommendations their readers really are. Here it is: promote a fucking awful band, a late-comer to the lo-fi bandwagon that everyone seems to be jumping on, and a fucking abysmal addition at that, and see just how far people will run with it. The results are in: you're all mindless, soulless douche bags with no real sense of identity or personal taste . . . congratulations.

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2009 9:24 PM

jealousy is hard to hide, obviously

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2009 9:43 PM

the thing that really cracks me up about wavves, and in my mind the real proof that, yes, they do in fact suck balls, is that after seeing them live, it's ridiculous to realize how much, despite all of the claims of "lo-fi" and "stripped-down", nathan relies on the studio to give his songs any appeal. wavves are a studio band! when they play them live, their songs are exposed as the weak and lifeless compositions they truly are - it's only the studio that gives nathan ability to dress them up and disguise the lack of creativity and quality in his song writing. the true test of a "good" band and "good" songs is the live show - nathan fails this test miserably. so while i liked a few songs prior to seeing him live, i've gone back to the album and now hear the songs i even liked at one point, as the lifeless, sloppy, and bored compositions they truly are. wavves sucks.

Posted by Anonymous | April 30, 2009 8:43 AM

hey doods. nice to know not all people think im a shit head. because i really am, in fact, a hipster fuck. i smoke swag, because dealers hate my cracker ass.

and im a dyke.

Posted by nathan williams | May 4, 2009 2:26 AM

wavves just aren't good. watch the live "concert" of them on pitchfork.tv. could you really watch that and say it's good? yet pitchfork talks about his "delightfully bad" haircut and his "delightfully cracking" voice or whatever. fucking wavves. just awful.

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2009 2:32 AM

These are powers are the best!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2009 6:29 PM

Vampire Hands are pretty creative and original... can't speak for the Powers group. Wavves is pretty sweet, definitely much more of a mass appeal kinda vibe. They can make it big, haters aside. Hipsters just want to be loved... wouldn't know love unless it was the next cool thing and love ain't that.
