Eugene Mirman @ Le Poisson Rouge (more by Tim Griffin)
Eugene Mirman

Dates have been announced dates for this year's Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, which will take place September 17th - 20th at The Bell House in Brooklyn. Lineup and ticket info to come.

Last year's fest happened September 15th-18th, with events at the Bell House and Union Hall. Featured acts included Janeane Garofalo, John Oliver, Kristen Schaal, Aziz Ansari, Michael Showalter, Mike Birbiglia, Fred Armisen and many others.

Aziz Ansari, now an even huger celebrity thanks to a co-starring role in the new NBC TV series Parks and Recreation, will be back in NYC soon and will be making at least two appearances while he's here. The first is at Eugene Mirman's weekly Tearing the Veil of Maya show at Union Hall on Sunday, May 3rd @ 7:30 pm (tickets at the door) (Eugene won't actually be there though). The next is one night later at UCB as part of Leo Allen's weekly, late-night Whiplash show. Tickets to the latter are free, and you probably want to make a reservation.

Aziz's other upcoming appearances include the Sasquatch Festival, Bonnaroo, and a TBA DVD taping in NYC in "early June".

Mirman is currently on tour with Flight of the Conchords (which is why he won't be at Union Hall on Sunday), though he didn't jump on till after the group's two NYC shows.

Mirman also recently toured with John Wesley Harding's Cabinet of Wonders. That show visited NYC three times: February 11th, March 11th, and April 15th (all three links have pics, one of which is reposted above). There remains a May 21st show hosted by Philly radio show World Cafe Live. Tickets for that show are on sale.

Speaking of John Wesley Harding (aka Wesley Stace), on Thursday, April 30th, he'll be performing at CUNY's Proshansky Auditorium on a bill titled "Collaborations/Elaborations: The Music of Daniel Felsenfeld." The event is part of the PEN World Voices Festival, and will feature Harding, Mark Z. Danielewski, Daniel Felsenfeld, Rick Moody, and others. Details on that below.

In addition to that show, Harding has his own UK tour coming up. He just did a reading/performance at the Union Square Barnes and Noble on April 27th.

Details on the PEN Festival show, with all upcoming Eugene Mirman dates and a video roundup of the comedian's recent activities, below...

April 30, 2009

Collaborations/Elaborations: The Music of Daniel Felsenfeld
With Mark Z. Danielewski, Daniel Felsenfeld, Rick Moody, and Wesley Stace

Using the creepy, love-struck, sexual, and elegiac words of Kenneth Koch, Comte de Lautréamont, and Jonathan Lethem--and featuring readers and performers, Mark Z. Danielewski, Rick Moody, and Wesley Stace--American composer Daniel Felsenfeld musically hones in on moments of personal, artistic, and social change. With an ensemble of New York's most accomplished singers and instrumentalists, this will be a powerful and surprising night of musical exploration.

When: Thursday, April 30, 2009: 7-9 p.m.
Where: Proshansky Auditorium, CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue [directions]

Entry by donation.

Will Eugene be unveiling any new jokes, or will this be the same tired routine he's been using for the past year or two?

Dear over it,

I saw Eugene 3 times last year, each time he had new material and was hilarious. I hope your douchebag ass stays at home.

i've seen eugene probably 15+ times in the last year (at whiplash, maya, opening for stella, his festival, 92Y) and everytime, he was doing new material. never tired, probably one of the hardest working comedians in new york and comedy in general. his book was great too.

last year's fest was great and i'm sure this year's will be even better. besides patton and the comedians of comedy, eugene is doing more for alternative comedy than anyone else right now.

John Wesley Harding IS Wesley Stace, so it's a bit redundant to have him listed twice on the CUNY bill. Just sayin.

Wow...seems like two of Eugene's friends are commenting on here. cool.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 4:35 PM

Obviously the people saying Eugene is doing the same material doesn't go to his weekly shows because he does nothing but new material every week.

Obviously doesn't go to his weekly shows or they'd know that he recycles most of his material week-to-week.

I can't even recount the number of times I've heard the "I bet they have bigger elevators than this in Russia" joke.

Old.

Yeah, that elevator joke is played out, and its not even funny. Also, the joke about pop-up ads was good the first time, but not the 7th.

"Obviously doesn't go to his weekly shows or they'd know that he recycles most of his material week-to-week."

Obviously if you thought his material was so horrible, you wouldn't to his weekly shows so therefore you obviously are full of shit.

You are correct. I don't go to his shows anymore...once I figured out that it was the same material week after week after week. Who knows though? It's been about 2 months since I last saw him...maybe he's thought of another joke between then and now? Then again, that's what I thought the last time I saw him too...nope...same jokes.

You know what's really great though? When he reads really random Mad Libs onstage. Boy oh boy, *that* never gets old.

"John Wesley Harding IS Wesley Stace, so it's a bit redundant to have him listed twice on the CUNY bill. Just sayin."

updated wording, thanks!

"besides patton and the comedians of comedy, eugene is doing more for alternative comedy than anyone else right now."

Um...Alternative Comedy? Seriously?
Sorry but Eugene Mirman (and Patton and Posehn and Dmitri Martin, etc. etc. etc.) should never (ever) be classified as 'Alternative Comedy'. They are standard, brick wall comedians that happen to listen to music that was once classifiable as alternative.
This is not a mere commentary on whether he (or they) are good or funny...it is fact that these guys are all so normal, they belong on Comics Unleashed w/ Byron Allen.

For alternative...I would look at Neil Hamburger, Albert Brooks, Tim & Eric, JP Incorporated, Reggie Watts...for starters.

You bougie assholes. I go to his show almost every week and he rarely repeats his jokes. Especially for one who is there every week. I bet all you losers DIE when idiots like Todd Barry show up once in a while and does his same old bathroom tile routine. Know what you're talking about.

Eugene Mirman is so unique and so unpredictable and the guests are so hard to see this is a great treat!

Wait, it isn't. NYC comedy is either inbred or UCB. We need a new paradigm here because it's all boring and tedious.

In defense of Eugene since I saw him several times last year. Yes he mixed in some old jokes, but each time he also had new material.

Eugene is awesome!
