The Sadies @ Big Apple BBQ 2008 (more by Chris La Putt)
The Sadies

The Seventh Annual Snapple Big Apple Barbecue Block Party returns to Madison Square Park June 13-14, 2009, from 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM...Admission to the event is free.
Remember how Lucero is touring and will be in the area with a show at Maxwell's on June 12th? Ends up there's also a NYC date. Lucero is headlining the Big Apple BBQ's first day on Saturday, June 13th (one day after the Maxwell's show). The show is free, but if you prefer Maxwell's, tickets for that one are still on sale.

The Sunday headliner for the Big Apple BBQ will be country guitarist and singer Junior Brown. Full lineup and all of Junior's summer tour dates are below.

The lineup for last year's Big Apple BBQ included Alex Battles & the Whisky Rebellion, Eli "Paper Boy" Reed, and the Sadies.

This year's fest will also have panel discussions scheduled throughout the day. Presentations include "What is it About Men and Meat and Midnight and a Pit?" and "Mutton: The Movie." OK, we really only like this festival for the music.

Full BBQ fest lineup details (Howard Tate included), and all Junior Brown tour dates, below...

BIG APPLE BBQ 2009 - MUSIC SCHEDULE (in their words)

Saturday, June 13

1:00PM - 2:15PM SARON CRENSHAW

Singer/guitarist SaRon Crenshaw might be one of the most soulful and exciting blues artists you haven't yet heard. The thing is, he's been out there for over three decades, having shared stages with the likes of Denise LaSalle, Bobby Rush and the late Tyrone Davis. SaRon Crenshaw is a masterful blues showman in the lineage of B.B., Albert Collins, and Buddy Guy.

2:45PM - 4:00PM HOWARD TATE

Howard Tate is one of the world's greatest living soul singers and the man who recorded the original versions of "Stop" (covered by Jimi Hendrix), "Ain't Nobody Home" (B.B. King), and "Get It While You Can" (Janis Joplin). Missing from public view for over twenty years, Tate made a triumphant return in 2002. Appearing with Howard Tate will be The Sweet Divines, a fabulous femme foursome (Pamela Quinn, Ashley Vitha, Jennie Wasserman and Heather Wolfe) making new soul music in a distinctly old school way.

4:30PM - 5:45PM LUCERO

They've been called "alt-country" and "punk country" and "Memphis' answer to Bruce Springsteen." But just as The Boss could only be from New Jersey, the rock & roll quartet named Lucero could only hail from the American South. The history, geography, and culture of the South have inspired Lucero's slice-of-life story-songs and the twanging bedrock country-blues sound of their classic guitars/bass/drums lineup. "In case there was ever any doubt, country music is always better when played by genuine Southerners...Lucero singer Ben Nichols has a fatigued, frayed drawl that no amount of dialect coaching can replicate." (Jenny Eliscu, RollingStone.com).

Sunday, June 14

1:00PM - 2:15PM THE DIXONS

With their debut CD Still Your Fool, The Dixons have created some of the most authentic Bakersfield -style country music ever made beyond the Austin city limits. The spirit of Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and Lefty Frizell lives again in Jeff Mowrer's thrilling voice and authentic original songs like "Still Your Fool," "Lonesome Side of Me," "Lovesick and Blue," and eight more future classics.

2:45PM - 4:00PM BILL SIMS JR.

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Bill Sims Jr. plays the blues with soulfulness and total conviction. A professional musician since the age of fourteen, Bill had the chance to play with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Freddie King (among others) before founding his own Cold Blooded Blues Band in 1988. Many listeners will remember Bill Sims Jr. as the subject of An American Love Story, the acclaimed PBS documentary from 1999, and as the creator of a fine self-titled album released on Warner Bros. in the same year.

4:30PM - 5:45PM JUNIOR BROWN

For more than a quarter of a century, Junior Brown has held high the proud banner of great American roots music with his inspired songwriting, genially soulful vocals, and jaw-dropping instrumental abilities on a custom-made "guit-steel" that combines a six-string electric guitar and a steel guitar. A typical live set by this master showman takes his listeners on a high-octane ride through country, blues, Tex-Mex, Western swing, and rock & roll with contemporary country classics like "Broke Down South of Dallas," "My Wife Thinks You're Dead," and "Long Walk Back to San Antone." There's no one else with that sound - it's just got to be Junior Brown!

If I was a vegan and I had issues eating meat I wouldn't want to be surrounded by smoking meat for hours upon end. Idiot...

Hey, we have to pay respect to BV for being gracious enough to billboard this despite his vegan-ness. This is, after all, just about the most meat-centric public event in NYC all year.

As for the music: Lucero AND Junior Brown ? They are really stepping it up...
