the Lovetonesthe Lovetones

Brian Jonestown Massacare are back again. Their current tour, which included west coast dates with Primal Scream, hits Terminal 5 in NYC tonight (April 1) with The Asteroid #4. Tickets are stil available.

I had to keep reminding myself that last night's show wasn't a comeback tour. Neither Scotland's Primal Scream (who've been around since the '80s) nor our own Californians Brian Jonestown Massacre (who came along a decade later) ever really went away. But it sure seemed like it. They both fell under the radar for a long time, releasing forgettable albums (or, in the case of BJM, cracking up) so that all but the most passionate fans flat out forgot about them. Last night, however, the musicians' persistence was rewarded when the groups sold out the Fillmore and delivered a spectacle for the eyes and ears--with surprisingly none of the tantrum shenanigans from BJM's moody frontman Anton Newcombe (he even dedicated the band's final song to "All you people who lost your jobs." Awww.).

Primal Scream came through NYC and played shows at Webster Hall and MHOW last week.

Australian singer-songwriter Matthew J. Tow toured as a member of, and wrote a couple of songs for, Brian Jonestown Massacre in 2003. Formerly of Australian band Drop City, he currently fronts The Lovetones whose new album Dimensions is out now (grab a track from it above).

The perpetually underrated LOVETONES return in style with their fourth album Dimensions. Bandleader *MATTHEW J. TOW*'s masterful mix of *DAVID BOWIE*esque balladry and 60s psychedelia leans hard on the latter half of the equation this time around - possibly a consequence of Tow's moonlighting tenure in THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE. That's hardly a bad thing if done properly, and the Australian band's sparkling acid rain makes Tow's irrepressibly tuneful songs shine like diamonds caught in sunlight. [The Big Takeover]

This is the BJM tour to see. No fights, long setlists and Matt Hollywood is playing guitar with the band. Which has opened the setlist up to his lot of songs, which they have been playing a handfull of everynight. Reviews have been great and they are as tight as a drum. GO!
*To bad its where it is, still going though.

Do you know what time tickets will be available at the door for the BJM show tonight?

I went to Terminal 5 this afternoon but it was all locked up.

I went into this with mixed expectations, and it ended up being one of the better shows I've seen in a while. Hollywood and Joel were with the band tonight (not that Joel adds much but being very hilarious). I can't say that the psychedelic 60s rock is exactly what I'm into, but the tore it up. It felt like a wall of sound, and everything was tight. The crowd was into it the whole way through. Hollywood might be one of the better vocalists out there who doesn't get enough credit.
It would of been real nice to get an encore, but the show ran long so I can deal. Overall awesome show!

sorry but that shit got old really fast. saw them a few years ago, thought i'd give it another shot cause it was free and it was still a yawn-fest, all air-jizzing into an audience who only got into it because it ran long enough for them to be drunk. the rain on the roof was cool though.

holy shit did you guys see Anton playing lead guitar? I'd never seen him rip a solo like that.

yeah it was a great show- does anyone know wtf that song was, where the band stepped off stage except for the drums and bass and anton was singing some shit 'listen motherfucker I'm not here for your hugs, listen motherfucker I'm here for some drugs'

that was too funny

Primal Scream has nothing to do with Anton shithead!

I once watched Anton get the crap beat out of him and it was the greatest fun I've ever had.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre at Terminal 5, as well as the Trocadero in Philadelphia were unquestionably 2 of their best shows in a decade. Anton is more focused than he's been in a long time and the band is supertight on this tour. I know a few of the guys in the band had other opportunities to do more profitable musical endeavors besides this tour, but Anton called and they came. People tend to dismiss Anton for some of his very public outbursts that have been so well documented in the past. If you're one of those people, I challenge you to find any flaws in his performances this time around. Hopefully he'll remain this way and get the BJM in the studio immediately after the Coachella show. This band is at a definite high point at the moment and they appear to have caught the proverbial lightning in a jar once again! The BJM rocks.

I saw them in Memphis this past Saturday night and they were unbelievably great. I have to second everything Scott DiPatria said in the comments. They played for about 3 hours and barely took a break. No doubt it will be one of my top 5 shows of the year and possibly the show of the year.

I taped a good portion of the philly show and posted it on youtube it's under my id (ivymike777). It includes the drug "rap" song from Anton (Someplace Else I Know). The show was truly incredible.
