Green Day playing Bowery Ballroom?

Bowery Ballroom (more by Tim Griffin)
Bowery Ballroom

"Green Day is set to appear at New York's Bowery Ballroom on May 18, just three days after the release of the band's hotly anticipated eighth studio album, "21st Century Breakdown," according to MTV Germany.

The small club show is a rarity for the band whose last album, 2004's "American Idiot," sold more than 12 million copies.

But the group has done some guerilla-style gigs in its hometown of San Francisco this past week, including a show at the 500-capacity DNA Lounge. According to the New York Times' ArtsBeat blog, the band played "21st Century Breakdown" in its entirety before running through a set of older material. " [Billboard] (thanks all)

In related news, Jack White's new band The Dead Weather is playing Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday, Morrissey played Bowery Ballroom recently, Yeah Yeah Yeahs played a small-for-them show at Santos Party House on Sunday, and Green Day is working on a musical.

How do you get tickets for the green day show??

I saw them when they played Irving on the release date of American Idiot and way back when Liberty Lunch was still open in Austin. They are amazing in small(ish) venues. I hope I can get tix for this.

Yesterday, I asked my nephew, now aged 13, if he is still into Green Day (as was the case circa American Idiot). No was the answer.

Last week they played the Independent in SF, not the DNA.

There was a point way back in the day when Green Day were really excellent.

The beginning of the end of "Time of Your Life." The middle of the end was them ripping off "Wonderwall" for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." Plans to turn their last album into a Broadway musical is the final nail in the coffin.

Happens to the best of 'em. RIP, Green Day.

I'm old. I saw Green Day opening for Bad Religion in 1993 at Roseland. That was the first I'd heard of them. Then I saw them at a CMJ showcase where they opened for the Flaming Lips. Finally I saw them at Iriving Plaza for the DOOKIE release party. I think that was the last I saw of them. From there it was all massive stadium shows.

I was at their show in Boston (at the Hatch Shell) when a riot broke out. Watching cops beat up fratboys, and vice versa, was pretty awesome.

I'm from SF and saw them in my college dorm and gilman street. i don't even like em.. top that!

Dude, their playing in my office right now. acoustics are better than bowery ballroom.

Yeah, well... I saw Greenday when they were called Sweet Children. I saw them playing in a park for money back when they were really punk. They were so punk and new that they looked homeless and were playing for bread. I gave them a dollar and Billie told me to "go fuck off".

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2009 12:28 PM

Yeah, well I gave birthed to Billy Jo in the back of a cab while working as a cab driver back in the 70's...

This site is full of douches.

I heard it was Keith but I would have to go with Ron. If you are named Ron, there is no chance that your parents ever loved you and you are ugly as sin. No doubt you will go through life carrying the burden of a failure and never finding happiness.

A. Non E. Mouse-

Wlel, it was published on Billboard's website yesterday, which I'm sure gets more readers than BV (no offense), so this wasn't exactly anybody's secret.

Considering no single fan got a Morrissey ticket for the Bowery show since the scalpers had them all; good luck getting Green Day tickets kids.

I heard "I Walk Alone" or whatever it's called on the radio today.

can't those overpaid fucks write some better lyrics than that cliched lazy bullshit?

how many times can you overuse the phrase "walk alone" in one song??

"my lonely heart is the only thing that's beating"???

crap, just fucking crap.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2009 8:00 PM

@ 8:00 - Tickets are not on sale yet. While it looks like it is happening, it has not yet become official. Be on the lookout though - the Oakland show went on sale a day today, a day before the show.

I have no idea why people are posting ticket links and info, the show hasn't even been confirmed yet.

Posted by Matt | April 13, 2009 8:27 PM

Matt, I get the feeling you don't have ideas very often.

Hey Anon 11:22 AM, I was at that Roseland show back in '93. I'd seen them once before, at City Gardens earlier that year (January '93) where they headlined. They were great both times and I haven't seen them play since then. I loved the 1st 2 albums and the early singles, but I stopped listening to them after Dookie, though. I don't dislike 'em or anything, but I just stopped following them.

Posted by Matt Berlyant | April 13, 2009 9:33 PM

Mercury says its bullshit.

Bowery says no comment.

Posted by AK | April 14, 2009 12:20 PM

Matt, I feel the same way. Nothing against them. Just moved on to other things. I still don't mind hearing what they up to, but I don't listen to them. They were always super nice at their shows, hanging around the floor before and after sets, letting 15 year olds (me) talk their ear off about guitars dumb stuff. Oh and Big Takeover is great. I'm a fan.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 3:12 PM

Hear hear Anon 3:12. I remember talking to Mike Dirnt (their bass player) at some point between sets during that aforementioned Roseland show and asking him about the major label deal they'd just signed. He was totally cool about it and everything and I was an 18 year old kid at the time.

And thanks regarding your comments about The Big Takeover.

I was at all 3 of those shows too. I havent seen them since that Irving plaza gig either.

I was at the Roseland show too. And Academy w/ Flaming Lips. And the St. Patty's show at Irving. Then they started to suck and I haven't seen them since. I'd check them out at Bowery if I could though!

93? I saw them plenty of times before that at City Gardens.

I saw Green Day open for TBA at The Ritz back in the early 90's..

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2009 4:00 PM

does anyone who went to any of the old shows have any more specific information about them?
I am trying to find out as much as i can about their old shows (1993 and before)
any dates or locations would be really great!
