photos by Tim Griffin

"...next was janelle monae ... i wasn't sure what to expect from her, though i'd heard rave reviews of her for the past few months, so i figured she couldn't be bad. little did i know, she would be flippin BRILLIANT! she's got pipes for days, and she's totally adorable, and shit, she can dance! i basically wanted to be her.Janelle Monae opened all three Of Montreal shows in Brooklyn last week. On Friday (4/17) she came on after Ladybug Transistor and later joined Of Montreal on stage during their set. More pictures from her set from that day below...

As an artist, you have to have core values that you stick to. I’m not trying to conform to fit in.” Do yourself a favor and follow her lead. (Janelle Monae ).
She is beautiful,love the hair.

Give it up for her band, too. It's like she's got fucking Eddie Hazel on guitar.
What's weird: She's signed to P. Diddy's label.

I saw Janelle here in Austin Tx during SXSW 2009, she killed every show she was at and was certainly one of the all around favorites for this year.
Very electrifying show... great stage presence.

Seems to be a LOT of money behind her.

"Seems to be a LOT of money behind her."
Um, that's a bit of an understatement. Bad Boy/Atlantic are at least a million $ in on this project at this point!

I dunno how much because they played to a backing track on a CD. I think if they had a lot of money they'd have a full backing band and back-up singers. The set-up was scarce but the show was Bad ass because of her stage presence and big voice to go along with her James Brown dance moves. She was great when I saw her wednesday night.
