Lou Reed's Metal Machine Trio @ Gramercy Theater - pics
photos by Lori Baily

"It was good to have this Lou Reed back: not an American Master nor a Legend of Rock, but a barking, brooding, beneficial irritant. On Thursday night at the Blender Theater at Gramercy, onstage between Sarth Calhoun and Ulrich Krieger, two much younger musicians, he was making noise -- improvised, loud, heavily processed, and some of it ugly enough to make people leave. The above review, and the one posted previously, refer to the Thursday show. The pictures in this post are from the Friday one (4/24) where the trio were also joined by John Zorn. More of them below...Not many, though. There were extra-musical reasons to stay put. An emotional reason: he's Lou Reed, poet of New York City, et cetera. And a big intellectual reason: Mr. Reed calls this group Metal Machine Trio, which refers to a notorious double-LP he made in 1975. "Metal Machine Music" is a kind of personality test. Many average listeners, even average Lou Reed fans, heard it as long-winded, discordant feedback." [NY Times]

The noise improvisations really came together in the second half of the show, when it sounded like they hit their stride with some nice ambient textures.

This was a sonic assault on the senses with no redeeming value whatsoever. It's safe to say Lou has finally jumped the shark.

Wow. Looked fascinating and exciting. Kidding. This looks as interesting as a trip to the dentist. And to think some dolts paid to witness this.

I'm better.

It was full at first and then a few people who couldn't handle the noise or who thought it was going to be a pop show (even though it clearly said on the ticket it wasn't going to be) left.

of course lou reed looks like shit. he's pushing 70!! think about all the fucking drugs he's done, all the shows, touring... you'd look like shit too.
i bet you when you're his age you're wearing diapers and watching cartoons, not playing gigs with john zorn.

"There were extra-musical reasons to stay put. An emotional reason: he's Lou Reed, poet of New York City, et cetera."
Nope, pretty much the only reason anyone was there was because it was Lou Reed.

wow...2:04 must be Reed's lawyer. Or just a d-bag super fan that wants to blow him. Why don't you go and do the amount of drugs he's done but only in your case you drop dead.

I love how insecure commenters on this site, faced with an opinion counter to theirs about some artist, immediately claim that the person must be a) a friend of the artist, b) a deranged mega-fan of the artist or c) a member of the band or d) in 3:52's case, a fucking *legal rep* of the artist.
Here's an idea kiddie commenters -- before you defensively fire back about shit, stop and realize that part of being all grown up means entertaining notions opposite yours. Crazy shit to swallow I know.

John Zorn being thrown into the mix was a real treat. It was a good show. Wish it hadn't been seated though.

Bunch of Snarky Dicks. You owe this man for all the great music you pretend to love and know so much about. You don't have to like everything he does (and god knows its difficult) but the man changed the fucking game.
oh: and I'm his proctologist.

uh...
what the fuck?
it seems like a show advertised as lou reed's metal machine trio would most likely result in noise-based improvisation so why do people get SOOO offended when they get noise-based improvisation? have you heard the album "metal machine music"? would you really expect him to play "walk on the wild side"? maybe this type of music isn't your thing (for most it's not) but why get so emotional? i'd offer the following advice: use your research skills (you clearly know how to navigate blogs) and choose the shows that you go to based on what you'd like to hear. lou seems to be pretty diverse in his concerts and if the metal machine trio + john zorn plays a concert maybe you should pass on it if you don’t want to hear loud, abrasive, noisy music. seems like common sense… maybe you guys just like to bitch
