Neko Case

Neko Case played her first of two shows at the Nokia Theater in NYC last night (4/13). Guests and bandmembers included Rachel Flotard from Visqueen, Lucy Wainwright Roche, Norah O'connor and Kelly Hogan. At one point Neko gave a shoutout to fellow New Pornographer AC Newman who appeared on Letterman (with Nicole Atkins) on the same night. Neko will play Letterman on Wednesday (tomorrow). The second Nokia Theatre show is tonight (4/14). More pictures from the first night, including one of the setlist, below...

She totally fucked her way to the top. Good for her.

That's an absolutely terrible and classless comment. Why do the majority of the people who post comments on this site have to write such hateful things? This is a site for music fans, not jealous, spiteful people afraid to show their real names. The admins should do a better job of cleaning up this sort of trash.

If you were at the show last night then you would know that she clearly sang her way to the top. That girl's got some pipes!

Posted by wembley | April 14, 2009 7:10 AM

When does the winner of the tickets for tonight's show get notified?

Posted by crossed fingers | April 14, 2009 7:37 AM

"She totally fucked her way to the top. Good for her."

says the untalented loser in his mom's basement cruising online at 5:43AM. Put down the meth jr and go stand in line for your next show at market hotel.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 7:58 AM

5:43. Whether one likes her or not, and I am not even a fan, Neko is one of the few that I would say has integrity.

Posted by donn | April 14, 2009 9:03 AM

only did 5 songs in encore, including 'favorite' and not 'polar' or 'next time'

Posted by anonymous | April 14, 2009 9:25 AM

Really impressive show last night. I would have loved Star Witness, but other than that I couldn't complain one bit.

Crooked Finger seems like a decent band when they let their drummer...drum.

Really, Anon 5:43, take your filth somewhere else.

Neko's got more than class...she defines class. Her show last night, employing the singing (and straight woman) talents of the inimitable Kelly Hogan, was one of the better musical events I've seen this year. Keep doing what you're doing Neko, and props for taking out the Crooked Fingers guys, a fantastic combination.

Posted by dhuman | April 14, 2009 9:30 AM

anybody know how early people were waiting to go in before doors opened?

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 9:43 AM

One thing you folks should know is Neko has a pretty biting sense of humor. I have no idea who Anon 5.43 is, but I'd put dollars to doughnuts if anyone were to laugh at the painfully obviously sarcastic comment of "fucking her way to the top", Neko would be the first. You all really have to work a little harder at taking it easy, and recognizing contextual humor when it's delivered.

Posted by peet | April 14, 2009 9:46 AM

About what time did she go on? (Trying to plan my evening. Thanks).

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 9:47 AM

Crooked Fingers were intriguing. The set and films that played during Neko's set verged on distracting but I still thought it was a great show and maybe would have been missing something without this feature.

She's really distant from her audience, cracks very dry jokes and doesn't look at us much. I think this only adds to our fawning behavior.

WE LOVE YOU NEKO

etc.

Anyone selling an extra ticket to last night's show?

Thanks in advance

Posted by The Time Traveller | April 14, 2009 9:51 AM

8:30 or so Crooked Fingers
9:45 Neko

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 9:52 AM

Last night went like this:

Crooked Fingers 8:35pm
Neko Case 9:50pm

She played until about 11:20pm.

Posted by wembley | April 14, 2009 9:53 AM

First!

. . . later haters.

Posted by BlogRat | April 14, 2009 9:53 AM

crooked fingers is awesome. the big bearded guy is a legend. I wish I'd seen the show!

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 10:08 AM

neko fans like neko but they don't like bonnie raitt.

I'm not complaining about that, I just think it's curious.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 10:18 AM

strokes fans like the strokes but not interpol.

i'm not complaining about that, i just thought i'd make a totally irrelevant statement.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 10:32 AM

The crowd got her to sing Star Witness at the Philadelphia show, even though the band said it would be a bit rusty and it was still amazing. I get goosebumps every time I see her perform live. Such a great night.

Posted by Brian | April 14, 2009 10:33 AM

I love Crooked Fingers, but we need the Archers back

Posted by Archers Of Loaf | April 14, 2009 10:45 AM

Did anyone else hear that tonight's show was cancelled? I was trying to figure out if I should make other plans for tonight.

Thanks.

"She's really distant from her audience, cracks very dry jokes and doesn't look at us much. I think this only adds to our fawning behavior."

Really? In Central Park she bantered ceaselessly, was entertaining as all heck, and of course sang like an angel. A possessed angel.

but as you said:

WE LOVE YOU NEKO

Posted by david z | April 14, 2009 10:52 AM

Amen, Archers Of Loaf.

Posted by michaelways | April 14, 2009 11:14 AM

Nokia Theatre's website says patron photography isn't allowed at this show - anyone who was there last night, was this being enforced?

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 11:18 AM

who was her back up band, again? they were fantastic!

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 11:42 AM

Anon 1:18, Neko has a strict no photo policy (thank god), and yes, it was heavily enforced.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 11:44 AM

Crooked Fingers was the tightest I've seen them - really looking forward to the Bell House show tonight.

Posted by RT | April 14, 2009 11:47 AM

Does anyone actually listen to Neko Case? ick.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 12:06 PM

^
No. Not a single person. We all listen to Dan Deacon, Crystal Stilts and the Vivian Girls, in the hopes that some day we can be as cool and disaffected as you.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 12:18 PM

Photo policy was strictly enforced. I kinda wonder how BV got these photos! I didn't see any cameras in there at all (including professionals).

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 12:29 PM

Fun show. Gotta say that Nokia Center is a fantastic venue. Also, Neko's voice is incredible. I was very impressed and had a great time.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 12:36 PM

Gotta say that Nokia Center is a fantastic venue.

> You need to get out more...

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 12:37 PM

despite being in time square, nokia IS an fantasitc venue. and, yes, i get out a lot.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 12:41 PM

The sound last night was crystal clear. She sounded fantastic.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 12:47 PM

I had a non-professional camera and had to check it for $3.

Posted by Liz | April 14, 2009 1:41 PM

Neko Case has a no photography policy for these shows. Not even for professionals.

Posted by Birdo | April 14, 2009 2:20 PM

Birdo - I'm on the list to photograph tonight, 3 songs but no pit I've been told, will be interesting...

Posted by jacob | April 14, 2009 2:37 PM

I got there at 6:45 and wanted to sit, and I got a seat in the first row. I was a single, though, so that made it easier. Down in front, people were sitting on the floor about 4 people deep, at that point. I would get there early, to get a good spot. Once you mark your spot, you can roam. I even saw people who found tables with good light, and were reading. If I knew I could walk in later, I would've and even skipped Crooked Finger (Fingers, or whatev). They were pretty, but just not that interesting ---and it was a long night. Neko was great. Just gotta love her!

Re: photog - I did see a few pros with nice long lenses.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 2:47 PM

Don't bring a camera -we learned the hard way that they force you to check it and then the line at coat check wraps around the whole lobby after the show.

"We all listen to Dan Deacon, Crystal Stilts and the Vivian Girls, in the hopes that some day we can be as cool and disaffected as you."

Ha ha, totally.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 3:43 PM

stick the camera down your pants. or up your skirt or whatever. Where there's a will there's a way...

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 3:57 PM

"Does anyone actually listen to Neko Case? ick."
I'd rather listen to her than 90% of all the boring indie crap I see out there. A majority of which no one will want to hear a year or two down the road. Neko's music is timeless and will be listened to for many yaers to come. Her voice is simply amazing, something missing in most indie music:real singers. Hey, she sold almost 4000 tickets on Mon & Tues nights in a recession. Not bad. Oh yeah, I admit I can't stand her other band, The New Ponographers. Ick!

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2009 11:40 PM

people need to relax. that shit was hilarious....and true

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2009 9:52 AM

Neko show was fantastic Monday night; My 1st time at Nokia, great venue and best acoustics in town (barring perhaps revamped Beacon),also nice to hit a restroom without having to walk thru a trail of piss, crap, and vomit (Knitting Factory, Living Room, any LowerEast Side club,,,).

Posted by dvmorrison | April 15, 2009 10:33 AM

Awesome Pictures. Thanks for the post. I've got my Neko Case tickets for this Monday's show at the State Theater in Ithaca and I can't wait. I'll be the idiot bringing the whole family; my three daughters absolutely love Neko Case.

Was anyone else puzzled by the choice of Joan as Police Woman for Tuesday's show? While the crowd was polite to Joan and her band, they didn't bring much energy to the place. Snoozer, in one word.

Good thing Neko and her band are so damn good!

Posted by Pierrepont | April 15, 2009 2:48 PM

anyone have the set list from last night?

Posted by magpie | April 15, 2009 3:00 PM

almost exactly the same, though they did "star witness" during the encore.

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2009 5:28 PM

"Star Witness" last night instead of "Polar Nettles". The rest of the setlist was the same.

Posted by sextonseven | April 15, 2009 7:42 PM

Joan As Police Woman was the reason I went to last night's show. It was my third time seeing Joan live and her performances as well as her albums are subtle and quiet like that. I think she's great.

Posted by sextonseven | April 15, 2009 7:48 PM

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2009 8:59 AM

Chris, are you any relation to Ashley Carrie Grantham? She's someone I met in Tempe, Arizona once in the mid-nineties.

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2009 9:10 AM

Saw the 4/14 show- Neko was fantastic! So happy she did Star Witness during the encore- so good. Joan was a little odd, but her music was good.

I had got a desire to begin my own commerce, however I didn't have enough of cash to do that. Thank God my fellow proposed to take the mortgage loans. Hence I took the sba loan and made real my desire.
