Of Montreal & Janelle Monae @ MHOW (4/2009) - pics, video

photos by Tim Griffin

Just finished performing David Bowie's "Moonage Daydream" with Of Montreal for the encore!!!!! F$$$ing amazing experience. Rock n' Roll!!! - Janelle Monae

Of Montreal

Janelle Monae and The Ladybug Transistor opened for Of Montreal on Friday (4/17). It was the headliner's 3rd of three shows in a row at Music Hall of Williamsburg (and their fourth at the same venue is less than 6 months). As you can see from the quote above, and the pictures and video below, Janelle also joined Of Montreal on stage during the encore...

One of the best shows I've ever seen. Completely destroyed their set at Roseland last October. Setlist on Friday was also way more epic than the one posted here. Opened with Past is a Grotesque Animal, played O.M.M.2., the mentioned Moonage Daydream cover... Show was perfect.

imo, thursday's setlist was better (besides the past is a grotesque animal of course) but moonage daydream was epic.

I will explain why all people young born post 1980 SUCK....

Had this been the seventies, the performers dress like this, the fans dress maybe for the concert like this, but every other day in normal clothes.

Maybe a few people dressed like "rockers" every day. Yet they were RARE and FEW and REAL.

Today, every annoying hipster prances around dressed like this. EVERYONE.

YOU ALL SUCK.

I PRAY FOR DISEASE OR ACCIDNET TO SNUFF YOU ALL FROM THE EARTH.

YOU SUCK. HIPSTERS.

Best post I've read all year. Ain't it the truth.

It is me or are the anonymous posts on this blog are starting to sound like they come from serial killers like Zodiac or Son of Sam?

In any event, does anybody know who threw all the money onto the crowd from the balcony? I made $2.

Admittedly, those pictures look great. Their costumes are wonderful, the set looks great, it looks like they put on a hell of a show.

It's such a shame theirs is some of the worst music being released these days.

"In any event, does anybody know who threw all the money onto the crowd from the balcony? I made $2."

-- It was Sir Robinhood of Williamsburg who takes from the hardworking slobs of the city and gives to the needy, fashionably gaunt hipsters. Hopefully they'll buy a pastry with that money or a useless 7 inch for their bathroom decor.

You blew your otherwise valid argument on defending this shitty band Of Montreal. Opportunity lost.

AMAZING SHOW by ALL. Janelle Monae KILLED IT!!! And Of Montreal was badass.

That encore performance was one of the best concert moments ever.

I don't know why people have to bring such negativity to posts about of Montreal. They put on some indisputably great live shows, as long as you're not a cynic in the extreme. And if you are, why does it bother you so much that others are enjoying themselves?

Friday was a blast! It was like the opposite of all the joyless bitching / snarking in these comments.

Posted by Anonymous | April 20, 2009 11:29 AM

That Bowie cover Friday night was some of the best stuff I have seen in 2009... Show all around was a blast but that surely topped everything else during that show.

aw, ladybug transistor were the most awkward. made my heart melt.

"tim griffin is a douche"

Thanks 10:30!

Any particular reason - or you've just been able to see through my nice-guy veneer?

I thought it was a good show, really. The setlist was great, bowie covers are always memorable, the crowd was a bit annoying, but thats too be expected with a 16+ indie pop show.
and, maybe i'm being a snob, but I just can't take their stage antics seriously. I thought the music sounded great, and I really do like theatrics being incorporated, but it just seemed so goddamn pretentious!
really, it was just shock for shock value. I can imagine them brainstorming, throwing out ideas like "lets have you dressed as jesus christ, and then the one in the pig mask will simulate anal sex with you."
give me a break. total bullshit.

Posted by Anonymous | April 20, 2009 2:56 PM

I don't think they expect you to take their stage antics seriously. If they did, then maybe you'd have an argument for them being pretentious. But I really think it's just supposed to be funny and visually stimulating, which it was! What a great time.

Posted by Anonymous | April 20, 2009 3:02 PM

anyone know the story behind the guy throwing cash down at the crowd? he had a trophy. what a dbag.

also, one of the most annoying front pits everever.

Posted by Anonymous | April 20, 2009 3:11 PM

Oh the young under 30 crowd. Lovers of things that have/make impact and clone things of the past!!!
Got's to be safe and clean for the kiddies.... They like things cleaned up now days. Safe but with cool 70's or 80's clothes... or a mix of both, which always leaves them looking like a really bad hanger..

Posted by Anonymous | April 20, 2009 3:21 PM

C'mon Grandpa- tell us more about the good ol' days! When everything was original and dangerous!

Posted by 31 | April 20, 2009 3:33 PM

re 2:56

Just 'cause you can't take something seriously doesn't mean it's not good. I don't think they really take the stage stuff so seriously, either. That's what makes it fun!

yo who is that tall sasquatch with the suspenders, in EVERY PICTURE?!

what a bitch!!! you know the carpet matches the drapes! friendzo! he must have staples in his head, blood everywhere!!

this is like a hipster music version of the rocky horror picture show.

"That Bowie cover" pretty much describes OM's ethos in a nutshell.

Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2009 10:39 AM

Firstly, Kevin looks amazing in these photos. Touring agrees with him.

I saw them in Boston on Tuesday and agree with another poster who mentioned that this show was better than the OM shows last fall (the Boston version of the Roseland show was at the Orpheum, which felt stifling). There was a lot less emphasis on material from Skeletal Lamping, a bit less in the way of theatrics. I always like their shows, but I prefer their classic animation/unitards/animal mask shows and don't really need the shaving cream/horses/hangings, which is the next level.

I just wish I had gone to both nights in Boston!
