Nas @ Rock The Bells 2008 in Jones Beach (more by villageslum.com)
Nas

OK, so it's not as much a big bang as last year (A Tribe Called Quest reunion) or the one before (Rage Against The Machine reunion), but Rock The Bells 2009 does have some interesting artists on the lineup. Besides a welcome reunion (Reflection Eternal) (Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek), one suspect one (House of Pain) and some great repeat offenders (Nas, RZA, Raekwon, MOP, Sage Francis, Slum Village), this year's Rock The Bells also boasts an Outkast (Big Boi), a windy city fave (Common), and a true sicko (Necro). The full lineup is:

The Roots have played quite a few shows in NYC lately, and have tickets left for a their upcoming Highline Ballroom shows through the end of June. The Philly crew is also playing Osheaga.

Big Boi made an appearance at SXSW and has a solo album coming out.

The duo collaborated on Marley's "Road To Zion", the follow-up single to the maaaaassssive reggae anthem and Grammy winner "Welcome To Jamrock". Distant Relatives is due in June. Posted by anon | April 8, 2009 2:03 PM

Some great acts on the line-up but not enough for me to get a ticket to it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2009 2:32 PM

for all the complainers, who would you want on here?

nice lineup. all artists that continue to make new music and push the boundaries of hip hop.

I like the lineup. The hits outnumber the misses.

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2009 4:04 PM

Ummmm i have to say maybe to this lineup. Im not too sure i want to venture all the way to Jones Beach and rot in this sun for this lineup.

Went the last two years (Randall's Isle and Jones Beach) and enjoyed both shows. My only gripe was with the Jones Beach venue...no booze unless you splurged for VIP passes.

Posted by sober in the sun | April 8, 2009 4:14 PM

I hear its back at Jones Beach. I will not be making the trip this year.

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2009 11:01 PM

went last year @ jones beach show was cool but it was like 12 hours and hot as hell out there and the fact that a bottle of water was like 7.00 didn't help but I still might go back this year

Posted by Eric Cromartie | April 9, 2009 7:48 AM

maaan, I wanted Blu on that lineup...

Posted by anon | April 9, 2009 5:10 PM

That's kinda weak. The lineups in '07 and '08 were so much better. Rock the Bells is falling off.

Posted by Sepa | April 9, 2009 11:51 PM

yeahhh...i went in '07 and '08. it was pretty incredible. the lineup this year doesn't really stand out much to me. give me something like pharcyde like you did last year rtb and maybe i'll think about buying another ticket. also, fuck livenation

Obviously you people who don't like this lineup have a serious problem. It must be because you are ignorant to real HIP HOP. This is Pure Underground Hip Hop, The real shit!!! These artists are what keep Hip Hop real. None of that bogus, commercialized bull shit that you hear playing on the radio. The combination of their hardcore beats along with some of the best lyricists out there. How can you say people like Nas, KRS-One, House of Pain, M.O.P., Tech N9ne, and of course LA COKA NOSTRA are lame and weak need to seriously educate yourself.

Posted by D | April 27, 2009 11:28 PM

I like the line up. I think a better headliner would be Gang Starr.

Posted by Mikey Blotto | April 29, 2009 12:51 AM

No Wale ?!?....are u kidding me???

Some of you guys are dillusional. This lineup is the real deal. Sorry it's not the radio crap you guys are programmed to think is good. Like someone mentioned this is real hip hop, the groups that are still around after all these years still putting out hard, bang your head against the wall rap. The new people just sound like the same groups with the ame songs over and over and you guys keep buying their crap making them rich. Really, listen to that stuff. They got you buying the same songs more or less over and over. This lineup is bringing it back to when things were the shit!

so kanye west doesnt deserve to perform with artists like SAGE FRANCIS or be on a tour that harbors some of the greatest artist in REAL hiphop.
what is this world comin' to???!!

I can't believe that anyone who is a true hip-hop head would say that the line up for this year is of a lesser quality than any year past. it's all hip hop. The show is hosted by Pete Rock, Supernatural, KRS, & Murs... it's a perfect combination of old school arcitects and newer mc's who are holding it down for the underground. I was dissapointed with a few of the performances last year that I was really looking forward to. There are a lot of cats that I never really got into before last year and their portion rocked. Sooooo though I came of strong, and I am passionate, I urge you to be more supportive of the overall underground/real hip hop movement. It's not just about what makes you shake your ass and bob your head. It's about creating awareness of real HIP HOP and the importance and relevance of it's place in the teaching community.
