Simian Mobile Disco @ Mess With Texas 2008 (more by Ryan Muir)
Simian Mobile Disco

Simian Mobile Disco is the first act we can confirm that is playing the Williamsburg Waterfront this summer. As you might remember, the waterfront is McCarren Park Pool's free show location replacement. The pair will DJ the spot on Sunday, August 9th. Okay, it's only a DJ gig, but still good to hear things are happening at the venue.

SMD is currently on tour. For a chance to see them "live" in NYC, they stop by the Highline Ballroom for a show on Thursday, Apr 23rd (Tickets are still on sale).

Newish vid (with "flashing image warning") for the band's song "10000 Horses Can't Be Wrong", and updated dates, below...

their live shows are just DJ gigs too, so what's the difference.

Sweet. Gotta send my super tight jeans to the cleaners!

oh boy. me likes

simian actually has done a bunch of "DJ sets", like with turntables, serato, etc, where they play other peoples tunes, as well as their own. as opposed to their live sets which they use sequencers, synths, tons of studio production equipment to recreate their own tunes in a live setting. so, yeah, there is a difference.

You guys are sooooooooooo gay. Synthesizers.

Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2009 11:24 AM

Yes, synthesizers are gay. You must've obtained an advanced degree.

ONLY a dj gig?!

Their dj sets are so much fun!

Posted by showtrotta | April 10, 2009 11:34 AM

threw up in my mouth a little bit.

dancing electro-hipster shit. lets see a BAND and not people behind a computer!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2009 12:29 PM

have you seen their live sets. they have like one computer and the rest is actual equipment that they are sequencing/programming live and on the fly. plus i've seen way more BANDS lately with a laptop running an ableton set off to the side of the stage. even Mogwai does it.

Posted by jason | April 10, 2009 12:32 PM

my synth is queer but not gay, and my drum machine is bi-curious, the sequencer is a transsexual lesbian.

the music that i like is better than the music you like.

surprisingly, i have seen this band, at the blender theater a few years back. and like i said, it was hipster trash. particularly the crowd of people there spoke volumes about the music and their 'scene'.

do you honestly listen to simian mobile disco and think it sounds like involving, engaging, live music and a band, even in the live setting? they jumped in a circle around a computer thing and lots of lights flashed. it was obnoxious and stagnant.

and as for your arguments that BANDS use laptops, you know full well how different that is than shit like simian mobile disco produces. go listen to justice, mstrkhafwahtever, and other dumb shit like this, it's all the same, it's all bad, it will all be hopefully laughed at in a few years time (though I laugh now).

2:58, u r so kewl

Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2009 3:07 PM

2:58 is right, the most engaging bands are only those which play instruments like guitars and drums to totally and completely involved fans that stand motionless, with their arms crossed.

Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2009 3:57 PM

3: 57,

thats funny, to even use a huge indie name like arcade fire, if you've ever seen them or even seen videos, nearly everyone in the front is involved and having their time of their lives and not just standing still and motionless. which, as i recall, seeing them was about 100% than seeing simian mobile disco.

"they have like one computer and the rest is actual equipment that they are sequencing/programming live and on the fly."

if it's got a button, it's a computer

if it sounds like the CD, it's probably prerecorded

if you see this band, you are a hipster

CITY! FASHION! DJs! YAY!

I have not seen one of their DJ sets but I have seen them play a regular set twice. They were great. I bet this will be fun, although I dunno if it will be as fun in a large outdoor setting. I for one plan to go to the show and find out though, not just rip on it before experiencing it.

their dj sets are great. saw them at the modular party cmj last year @ studio b. they are the real thing. not dj hacks...

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2009 12:23 AM

"if it's got a button, it's a computer"

So your dad's vibrator is now a "computer". Fancy!

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2009 1:28 AM

It's free. Stop whining!

Posted by Arnold | April 11, 2009 2:10 PM

it's not a McCarren Pool "replacement," and it's not a "venue," it's a construction site hosting a DJ gig.

McCarren Pool remains closed, with no free or ticketed shows. It's unfair to the Wmsbrg Waterfront to pretend it's in any way a replacement.

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2009 2:32 PM

What time does 12:29/2:58 dis Daft Punk?
