Monotonix @ Mess With Texas (during SXSW 2009) (More)
Monotonix

[The Village Voice is] downright ebullient to announce the official details on this year's Siren Festival, which will, as always be free, all ages, and rain or shine. It'll take place on Saturday, July 18 at Coney Island and likely involve a crowd-surfing drummer. Without further adieu:

SIREN MUSIC FESTIVAL
At Coney Island, NYC

Saturday, July 18, 2009
Noon - 9:00pm

BUILT TO SPILL
THE RAVEONETTES
FRIGHTENED RABBIT
THE GRAND DUCHY
MONOTONIX
MICACHU & THE SHAPES

+ more TBA

Looking good already (thx Ryan).

Micachu is also playing the Capitol Hill Block Party in Seattle later that month.

Monotonix also has another Brooklyn show coming up much sooner.

Grand Duchy
is Frank Black and Violet Clark.

hopefully this will mean a frightened rabbit tour. wasn't last year supposed to be the last siren fest....

now the thread will be

"siren fest sucks...coney island...bad sound...past lineups were better"

then

"stop complaining...it's a free show...don't go if you don't like it"

over and over

Lineup looks fine but I kinda wish this festival would just die...I mean I am just sick of every year everyband talking about how sad it is that this is the last Siren Fest. We have had "the last Siren Fest," like 3 times now.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 12:20 PM

don't care about this fest, but i really want to see built to spill. i'd rather see them do a club show, but whatever. it's free.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 12:21 PM

BTS and Raveonettes?! Wow, I might actually attend this for the first time in my life.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 12:22 PM

nah, it really is the last festival every year. just in a Sumerian way of looking at things.

Posted by Isfet | April 28, 2009 12:27 PM

this is a very good initial lineup.

if you don't know, gran duchy is black francis' band with his wife and is actually really good.

micachu was fun when she played here last month.

Good news but it still doesn't mend the fact that Japandroids cancelled their May US dates. Total fail for the week :(

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 12:30 PM

If you die, then it will be the "Last Siren Fest ever"

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 12:34 PM

Here's to hoping Ami doesn't tone down the public nudity for this gig.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 12:50 PM

really, though, how will Monotonix work if they have to play on a stage?

Posted by Isfet | April 28, 2009 12:58 PM

Japandroids cancelled their tour? That sucks!

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 1:17 PM

SHIT YEAH! Best news of the summer.

I really dug the last couple Sirens, but this one is going to blow them out of the water. BTS!!!

Posted by wembley | April 28, 2009 1:21 PM

"really, though, how will Monotonix work if they have to play on a stage?"

Um, look at the picture above.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 1:28 PM

Micachu. Period.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 1:30 PM

fuck. same day as Wilco at Dutchess Stadium.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 1:31 PM

@1:28, the photo above is from a park in austin that has a lot of room for the crowd to spread out and see the band. it's a much wider space.

siren's set up doesn't allow for that kind of movement - the crowd is generally packed into a narrow and long space. i'm concerned as to how monotonix will be able to play a decent set because only the people in the front will be able to see anything, i'm guessing.

they sound like shit, but seeing the band in action is the only way to save their gnarly teenage garage rock sound.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 1:34 PM

so far... not bad! Built to Spill for free is good news to me!

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 1:35 PM

There's also a big photo pit between the crowd and the band at Siren (unlike at Mess With Texas) - will be tougher for Monotonix to get their drum kit through that and into the crowd, unless photographers help (or security - one of them gave a fan in the crowd Parts & Labor's bass last year, when B.J. Warshaw threw it into the photo pit), or fans storm the photo pit (a-la Matt & Kim two years ago).

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 1:46 PM

Fantastic starting line up.

Does anyone know if the closing of Astroland gives them any additional room this year? I've always hated the long narrow layout that they had to use.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 2:00 PM

NUT BUSTER!

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 2:01 PM

1:31

are you seriously torn? seriously?
wilco is the fucking obvious answer.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 2:12 PM

2:12

Not really torn. I mean... I already bought my tickets for Wilco.

But it's annoying that, in a summer that looks like it's going to be light on good free shows, that I'm going to have to miss one that I would LOVE to go to. I'm a huge Built to Spill fan and always have a great time at Siren, no matter who's playing.

Just kind of a shame. The Voice should have consulted me before picking that date. (Although, I think Siren is usually held about the same time every July and I probably should have guessed it would be on the 18th.)

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 2:32 PM

why not just scalp them wilc tics and see them at keyspan so you can go to siren.

also, siren looks good this year. i would say last years lineup has a slight edge, but you can never argue with free.

also, i dont think this summer will be light on good free shows, especially with the williamsburg waterfront. they have something to prove, and i trust they will book good stuff there.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 2:42 PM

where in coney island exactly? it's a wreck.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 2:42 PM

glad that it still exists.... shitty lineup though

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 2:51 PM

yay -- built to spill.
boo -- so fucking hot out that day

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 3:19 PM

they always have that one broken social scene/built to spill type band.

i've seen monotonix live and while they smell and make me uncomfortable, it was really fun. they should be easier to handle if they're on a stage and i can be detached and amused, instead of the tiny, greasy guy rubbing his butt on me.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 4:45 PM

4:45.. What "type" is broken social scene and built to spill?

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 4:50 PM

super indie-famous standard indie-rock band. although i guess two years ago they had the new york dolls which isn't so much. but the year before that it was Spoon. and the year before THAT it was Death Cab for Cutie. And the year before that Modest Mouse when they made that one super accessible record. Kind of see where I'm going with this? I'm mean there is nothing wrong with that, but just saying the VV really likes Indie Rock.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 5:13 PM

"I'm mean there is nothing wrong with that, but just saying the VV really likes Indie Rock. "

WHO CARES? It's an indie rock festival. What do you want? hip hop? World music? Liza Minelli?

If so, wrong festival!

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 5:27 PM

omg, that was the most totally inappropriate response since i said there was nothing wrong with having indie-rockin headliners, haha.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 5:51 PM

I'm asking myself the same question as Anon@2:42PM. Is there anything left standing in Coney Island that does not look like a rubble?

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 6:21 PM

the artwork for this year is gorgeous! That siren chick just keeps getting more more tripped-out by the year.

Posted by color form | April 28, 2009 6:24 PM

where are they gonna play? on top of the cyclone?
as far as i know, there are 0.00 places they can set up a stage in that dumphole.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 7:15 PM

the only band in that line-up capable of playing on top of the cyclone is monotonix. they is crazy.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 7:18 PM

Best line up in a while. Tough choice between BTS and Raveonettes (assuming they are the 2 headliners).

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 7:46 PM

we all better go! this is the LAST yaer! They mean it this time! condos in 2010

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2009 8:02 PM

They say that every year. This shit will keep happening.

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2009 12:12 AM

Same day as Q-Tip in Central Park, tough choice

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2009 12:43 AM

do they issue free tickets before the fest or day of. first some first serve? anyone know the deal??

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2009 12:48 AM

you just show up

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2009 1:18 AM

"Without further adieu:"

The phrase is "without further ADO," you pretentious dipshit.

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2009 3:23 AM

no tickets. If you want a good spot for the headliner, you should probably stake your claim the set or two beforehand. Got lucky last year that pretty much everyone wanted to see Broken Social Scene... so I was able to get pretty damned close for Stephen Malkmus.

earlier in the day it's pretty easy to move between stages and hit up the Nathan's for hotdogs and huge beers.

Posted by wembley | April 29, 2009 9:36 AM

"are you seriously torn? seriously?
wilco is the fucking obvious answer."

yes, especially considering they haven't made a good album in seven years.

the correct answer is to see them at keyspan *and* go to siren.

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2009 9:48 AM

"where in coney island exactly? it's a wreck."

go back to omaha. now.

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2009 9:56 AM

Anyone know if BTS will be touring?

Posted by Liz | April 29, 2009 10:20 AM

maybe japadroids will play siren . . . tour rescheduled:

better than All Tomorrows Parties! I can't give me ATP tickets away!

Posted by wingwalker77 | June 21, 2009 7:11 PM

Lineup does seem on par with a day of ATP. But it is apples and oranges. I still love Siren for a free show but the stage layout and sound would be hard to justify at regular festival prices.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2009 7:31 PM

The ATP lineup is dreadful! Siren looks good this year! I'd hit it!

I will recommend not to wait until you earn enough money to order all you need! You should just get the mortgage loans or just college loan and feel free
