Fucked Up @ Culture Shock '08 (more by Leia Jospe)
Fucked Up

SUNY Purchase's annual Culture Shock Festival is taking place this year on Friday, April 17th and Saturday, April 18th.

Both headliners for the ninth annual fest will be hip-hop acts. Rapper/actor Drake will end Friday night's show, while Saturday's top act will be the Cool Kids (who are also playing All Points West).

You may remember 2008's Culture Shock as the festival where the mild mannered Canadians in Fucked Up "almost got arrested and their set got cut short" (as one commenter succinctly put it). Hopefully NYHC staples Murphy's Law will help make this year just as memorable (they are playing on Friday).

Culture Shock may or may not be open to the public/non-students -- a fact that sparked much debate last year.

The Tallest Man On Earth, currently on tour from Sweden (and in NYC as we speak), plays the fest on Saturday. Full 2009 line-up below...

Culture Shock 2009 line-up

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2009 12:37 AM

im going to purchase next year, how does one get in this thing

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2009 1:05 AM

"this is total garbage. bring back alaina"

or not. though the lineup was definitely more interesting last year, the majority of the acts were still gentrificationXcore crap booked on account of buzz rather than being halfway decent.

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2009 2:25 AM

this line up is awful.

Posted by hipster | April 15, 2009 2:39 AM

look at the link re: 2008 culture shock baove how to get in

go early, Friday, or park car off campus somewhere (ggole map) and walk through the woods

there is no fence, they will close off main road, hard to drive in but easy to walk, have a car drop you off, taxi, friend etc....

if you do not cause problems, dont steal, fight, damage, openly use drugs, openly drink, just fit in

the worst that can happen is they ask you to leave

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2009 7:31 AM

that's quite a belly.

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2009 8:37 AM

Murphys Law! I cannot believe it. Should be awesome...

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2009 9:08 AM

"that's quite a belly."

Your mom thinks so, too.

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2009 9:30 AM

Best Culture Shock lineup was 2005's--Animal Collective, The Walkmen, Yo La Tengo, Lightning Bolt, Cat Power etc.

posers

hipsters

fuck tards

they wine about budget cuts, yet have money for lattes, itunes, indy festivals, ipods, UGG boats, etc....

why not charge $25 for both days to non students, 2000 people = $50k.....

look at the blogs on Purchase Brick

read about last years 2008 festival

Posted by old timer | April 15, 2009 10:16 AM

can I see posts and comments from non-students who really tweaked in....

not just internet tough guys?

Posted by reality | April 15, 2009 10:21 AM

old timer, you're an idiot. culture shock is paid for by our mandatory student activity fee, which is a completely different set of $$$ than the $$ from the tuition hikes. our MSAF is actually paying for events AT purchase. only 20 percent of the revenue generated from the tuition hikes will go back into the suny system.

hipster douchebags, stay away. or at least leaving the obnoxious dslr cameras in williamsburg. yes, old people with receding hairlines, gigantic lenses and no business hanging out on a college campus, i'm talking to you. brooklynvegan, you're also an idiot. how many years have you been posting about culture shock? why do you insist on calling it "SUNYS culture shock?" SUNY = 64 campuses. we're suny purchase.

Posted by ... | April 15, 2009 11:01 AM

who uses the word poser?
really?
what are we like 14 years old?

ps- the line up does kinda suck.

Posted by bla | April 15, 2009 11:02 AM

this is an awful line-up. whoever organized this year is a lush

Posted by Jmaes | April 15, 2009 12:09 PM

At least Murphy's Law is a good band and always puts on a great live show.

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2009 12:32 PM

i go to purchase and i know this line up is pretty much shit. not gonna stop me from having a good time though. stop bitching about shit you can't do anything about.

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2009 12:43 PM

to get on campus: dress like a hipster or you WILL be found out. If you can manage to hop on either the Purchase shuttle or the 12, take it from White Plains onto campus. Alternative option is, as previously stated, to walk through the woods.

Posted by ghosting | April 15, 2009 12:44 PM

The last two years have been hugely disappointing.
There is always hope for the next year.
This is not a culture shock in any way.
Bring back the word music

Keep Brooklyn out of Purchase.

Posted by Purchase heavyweight | April 15, 2009 1:13 PM

why don't they use the mandatory student fee to cover operating costs of the campus...why don't students stop by UGG boots, ipods, and itunes and lattes from starbucks and pay their tuition....

use the acitivity fee to pay for the needs of the school

your activity purchase weenies can be shadow puppets and campfire songs....got it, dweebie..

Your activity can be hitting the books and studying......

wtf, you can pay the activity fee then you can pay tuition...

use your parent's guess jeans and members only jackets and cassette walkmans....and forgo the gear for your education

non-student, tax payers, hop on the bus, walk through the woods...go there....

hey many of the Purchase Cops tell there cop buddies to come.........many off cops, NYPD , surrounding Town cops go for fun, the Purchase Cops let them in...

Posted by old timer | April 15, 2009 5:08 PM

The Purchase Cops will let any other cop off duty in.....

The straight girls at Purchase are hungry for men?

Arent they?

Most guys at Purchase are dweebs anyway....

I would not go to this poseur-fest for cash $

besides Purchase kiddies are racist

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2009 5:18 PM

If you are not a student you do not belong on the campus.

The state police will arrest all who trespass.

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2009 6:00 PM

oh yes purchase loser kids, brooklyn is just clamoring to scale your fences and invade your ugly little campus.

you just go right on believing that!

hope it makes you feel better, once a year.

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2009 6:10 PM

purchase is liberal arts college for poor kids and middle class fuck ups who partied too much in high school to qualify for a scholarship.

add to that state trooper security guards breathing down your neck. Plus there's the indignity of actual striving, hardworking, working class people trying to genuinely get an education while the stoners dress in thrift store flourescents and bitch about "Brooklyn".

Purchase students, I can only say it bluntly:

YOU ARE LOSERS

Maybe everyone should stop while they're ahead. Vicemag/Brooklyn Vegan-brand trolling/flaming is rarely ever entertaining and all parties involved usually come off like the overfed self-centered dilettantes that they are.

Posted by Alleycat | April 15, 2009 6:52 PM

What is a dilettante?

All of you idiots who don't even go to Purchase, don't worry about who's playing or whether the line up is wack because your not going anyway. And, there are no ugg boats in this campus, only Ugg BOOTS dumbass...

Posted by Fuck purchase haters | April 15, 2009 7:49 PM

As a resident of Fairfield CT, and a student at St John's, I declare this year's line up to be wack. I was worrying all year about who would be plating and it according to the line up, sounds way wack.

I am going.

I will meet a girl.

And I will drill her silly as she wears nothing but UGG boots and her dyke girlfriend or prissy boyfriend will be cuckolded.....

Those UGG boots will be high in the air as her long skinny dancer legs can stretch (and purchase dancer chicks are flexible....)

Amazing what a purchase girl will do if you buy her a $8.99 decaff lowfat protein whey soy latte.....

Posted by dumbass in ct | April 15, 2009 9:15 PM

lol @ "ugg boats," you beat me to it

I just found 2 boxes of past-due-date clementines in my kitchen; if you walk by my apartment this weekend and you look like you're in a band with "wolf" in the title, I'm going to throw rotten fruit out of my window at you

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2009 9:19 PM

These students whine they have no money to pay tuition hikes, why not forgo the ipod, swag, UGG Boats, American Apparel, etc etc etc

How much do these little dweebs spend to look indie in their cookie cutter designer clothes????

Why dont they just wear their parents old guess jeans and members only jackets, instead of buying new ironic versions of 80s fashion, wear their parents old clothes?????

Posted by Mrs. Muir | April 15, 2009 9:21 PM

Not worng. This same boring thread happens on here every year with one side taking really cliche potshots/sometimes accurate assessments and asking how to get in and the other saying its private (when its really not, kids) and going on anti-hipster tangents as if its 2007 and that's still a refreshing point of view. Its only entertaining if you've never seen the other 3 or 4 posts. For reference, search "Culture Shock" on Brooklyn Vegan and see how redundant this shit is every year.

Posted by Alleycat | April 15, 2009 9:35 PM

I am Wolfman Fred, of the Wolfmatics, and well there Mr Apartment Dweller, it seems you mis-calculated you clementine consumption needs and overbought yet again.......

or how about "Car Bears on Fire", something cute and something edgy, their parents drive them to their gigs, that ishow the dead started out no?

Pete Best got kicked out of the beatles becuase of his mom butting in.......

Now it is cool....

Het Purchase brats, do your mom's come to tie the laces to your UGG boots......

Wow, the amount of super retarded-ness (idiocy, slander, stereotypes, etc) in this, though not unexpected, is astounding. Maybe because I go to a place where, or the most part, people actually... I dunno... use their brains.

Seriously, actually spend some time on our campus hanging out with actual people before making such asinine statements.

You call us losers? Considering none of what you said is really true, your burning need to shoot off like a retarded duck with diarrhea is the definition of sad loser stink.

Can we say, grade-a fucking hypocrite?

As you see, this began as a way to showcase SUNY Purchase bands.

Back in the day, we went to the city to see current popular bands.

It evolved into an actual mainstream thing.

I am an alumni, late 30s, receding hairline, make a living in the music biz, who is not going.

Have your fun, but please know I WOULD have gone if it WAS still a showcase for up and coming Purchase bands.....

Yes, I know it is what it is and who am I to change a broad trend but this is my opinion, I am glad I was young when I was, and I am past that now.

Best wishes to all in my Alma Matter....

I know nothing about this festival.

One of my cousins went that school. He was an actor. He kept up with the curriculmn. Got good grades.

However, they kicked him out in his junior year.

I do not get it?

He said it was because his advisor, a fag, wanted to get sucked off and he refused.

Why did they accept him into the program, and then make him leave before he finished the damn four years.....?

Seems like a wierd place. He was never the same after that....

Aren't you all... umm... old people?

So get over this. This concert is for students who pay the money behind it and OUR FRIENDS... not you assholes who seem to enjoy making gross generalizations about why we're here and who we are.

Not EVERYONE voted for the Starbucks, thinks that sweatbands and spandex are cool, and not EVERYONE came here post-hipster invasion. Some of us attended Purchase b/c it's cheap and close to home, so suck it. If you assholes insist on coming, maybe you'll be able to locate the last generation of semi-acceptable Purchase kids in the beer tent far away from the children.

Not only do you sound like idiots who don't even know what your talking about, you don't even go here so how the hell would you know how the students are or whether our Culture Shock festival is bad or not? You don't fucking go here! So get a life, don't come if it's so wack and shut the fuck up.

Like someone said, we can rip on our school twice as badly as you, and yet we don't b/c we understand that there are good people from all groups; I'm not a hipster, or a hippie, or an artist, and yet I realize that for every asshole of the above types, there is also a worthwhile human being who you'll miss out on if you stick to generalizations. GET OVER IT. We have... and we LIVE with them.

Yes, most of the music sucks, but I'm in it for the beer and the chance to get my friends from Long Island laid. If you're not in it for those things + don't like the music (or are older than us by a margin that equals out to possible father/creepy uncle) then stay away. We don't want you, and no one is going to fuck your sorry hater ass.

Purchase people, I don't know how to break it to you, so I'll just be blunt...

NOBODY FROM BROOKLYN CARES ABOUT PURCHASE. AT ALL.

YOU ARE DELUSIONBAL LOSERS.

THIS 'FESTIVAL' LINEUP WOULDN'T BE WORTH TAKING THE SUBWAY TO, OR WALKING DOWN THE STEEET TO CHECK OUT, MUCH LESS DRIVING AND SCALING FENCES.

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2009 7:28 PM

There are no fences at SUNY Purchase. There is a main road, there are woods, no fence, just the woods. You would have to know where you were going.

Part of the attraction is the 'scene', the beer, the 420, the girls in ripped jeans, sandals, running around like naked nymphs.....

Ask any Purchase girl about Purchase boys....

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2009 7:36 PM

What older person or younger person or any person would want to go to this.

And if an older sugar daddy dude wanted a college girl, the LAST girl on earth would be a Purchase Girl, the shoplifting, the cutting, the belly fat, the psychosis....

There are so many Vassar, NYU, Columbia, etc girls for the suggar daddies out there.....

If they wanted a musician: Lincoln Center

If they wanted an artist: Pratt

A film or photog major: NYU

Well Purchase girls, do they sell cutting supplies in your campus book store????

the fest last year was light years better than this pathetic thing.

high places, deerhoof, csiotone, gang gang dance, fucked up. those were solid, interesting bands.

this year is just bullshit

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2009 8:12 PM

The thread for last years Fest said it 'sucked.'

I am sure there were people who deemed everyone ever sucked....

Everything sucks to someone!

The whole idea of the Fest sucks.

It was intended some 15+ years ago to showcase SUNY Purchase Student Bands. Now they book outside bands.

The organizer has to placate everyone's tastes (impossible) and work within a budget and the talent's availabilty.

Noone is ever going to be happy. These bands draw in outside crowds and problems....

Why do they have this? Just book single acts throughout the year as all college do.

The Culture Shock Festival should showcase STUDENT BANDS....

What's next? An art exhibit of outside artists...?

This school has a music division....

If it WERE (thank you) student bands I would get off my lard ass and go see. Who would not want to see the next Dan Deacon or Regina Spektor in the raw.....

Why should I sweat my ass off seeing bands I could see with VIP access as I am in the biz....

T-bone's gettin' upset!

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2009 2:15 AM

It doesn't actually matter if you off-campus folk come, just be chill and don't pillage or rape anything.

And don't - DON'T - buy up all the fried Oreos.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2009 3:12 AM

If you're coming up here for the music I already want to hurt you.

If you motherfuckers would just learn to keep satan in your life we wouldn't have these fucking problems.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2009 3:24 AM

Upset that somebody has the audacity to kill their own brain cells in a way that retards everybody else maybe.

Posted by T-bone | April 17, 2009 4:07 AM

Can't we all just get along?

Hipsters need to stick together.

That would be cool?

Or ironic?

When people cheer, scream and pump fist in the air are they being ironic or rocking the house?

And how does one fry an Oreo?

I heard that Kari Ferrell, Hipster Grifter, is going to 'hide' at SUNY Purchase this weekend.

Watch your trust funds!

Purchase thinks it's important. That's cute.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2009 11:16 AM

Some anonymous coward thinks (s)he is important.. that is cute.

Please, go back to blowing yourself in the corner of a dark alley and let us normal people discuss Culture Shock in a semi-civilized manor.

Posted by T-bone | April 17, 2009 11:28 AM

T-bone, what will we do when this thread is ancient history and we don't have your oblivious wisdoms to liven the workday?

thank you for being what ya are, T-bone. It's precious and adorable. I'm happy that blind, ignorant, inarticulate school spirit is still alive and well somewhere. Makes me smile.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2009 11:49 AM

"I'm happy that blind, ignorant, inarticulate"

Hypocritical aren't we?

Youve posted nothing factual, stereotypes and generalizations that have jack shit for roots in I don't know.. actually existing?

Keep living in your dream world, I won't back down just because some asshat who isn't even posting in name can't wrap his head around simple logical statements.

Posted by T-bone | April 17, 2009 12:19 PM

T-bone is your name? What a birth certificate you must have!

calling oneself "T-Bone" is not any more brave nor more identifying than calling oneself "Anonymous"

If you're so brave, please provide your email address, website, myspace link, facebook, twitter, home address, cell number, etc

Posted by hahaha | April 17, 2009 4:55 PM

haha i find it funny that everyone is calling Purchase a place where their parents pay for their education and they blow their money on stupid shit, yet I bet half of you douchebags in williamsburg have your mommy and daddy pay your overpriced rent.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2009 5:47 PM

haha i find it funny that everyone is calling Williamsburg a place where parents pay for their rent, yet I bet halve of you douchebags in Purchase get money from your parents to blow on really stupid overpriced shit instead of something smart like rent.

And hassles nobody.

How much rent is too much rent?

I pay mine myself, if I dont pay it someone esle will !!!

Today I am making sweet monkey love to a SUNY Purchase Student's Mom from Long Island.....

Everyone posting on this is a fucking idiot. Purchase kids and BK (artificial)-hip sters. SUNY Purchase is incredibly easy to get into, unless you're going for a conservatory study (Music, Dance, Film, etc.) in which case it's incredibly difficult.
I love how people are talking shit about how much money these kids have. THEY GO TO A STATE COLLEGE!
This goes out to the person who wrote, "8. NYU wish they werz"
If you weren't spending $40,000+ a year to get taught by Teacher's Aides, then you could afford all the Uggs and Starbux you want! Have you run into Felicity yet? That's the reason you go to NYU, right?

But seriously, next year better be booked by someone who isn't a Dave Matthews Band fan who wants a corporate sponsorship from Pepsi.

Posted by KY | April 18, 2009 5:08 PM

memo to KY, 5:08PM

can I sniff your UGG boots and lick your empty Starbucks Cup....?

NYU is a world known institution. The Felicity digg really hurt, please take it back, really, that was so mean...

Seriously, we get scholarships and financial aid, etc, and our parents saved money for our education, sorry daddy spent your college fund on his Playboy Collector Dolls and your Mom's SUV...

Why does the Conservatory accept students and then kick them out not for bad grades, bad behavior, but just not sucking off the right big fish in your small pond....?

I know a dude at Guitar Center, a real talent, who got burned by that place...

Posted by love to listen to you whine | April 18, 2009 5:59 PM

what is a non-artificial hipster?

arent all hipsters artificial?

dont all hipsters not realize they are hipsters?

Go ahead, correct my grammar, on ther internet, if it makes you feel better, then go cut yourself some more....

k?

RE - POST:

I would go if this were a student run show featuring student acts.

In my day that is what Culture Shock was.

We also brewed our own coffee on machines and carried it in a thermos....NO STRABUCKS...

So, you all suck, by the way, I hire interns for a recording studio, I hire out of technical schools, people who want to work in the biz...not little dweebs who watch a show and sip Starbucks...I am writing my state senator to put and end to this crap, and he will, if you can use this fee money to be a spectator, you can use it to pay for education....

I never give $ to Purchase, ever,

And, by the way, my internships pay $15 an hour, just to rub it in....

You all suck, not just Purchase, most people young these days, little consumer lemmings......

YOU ALL SUCK

and you cut yourself too much....

See Purchase, nobody invaded your festival.

By starting this thread and pretending to be people wanting to crash, you got zero attention.
