The Walkmen @ Webster Hall, NYC - pics
photos by Tim Griffin

"Several songs into the Walkmen's sold-out show at Webster Hall Thursday, Hamilton Leithauser wryly prefaced the band's first "hit" song "We've Been Had" by explaining that he'd just turned 31 the day before, Tax Day, April 15th. Anchored by Walt Martin's now-classic tinkering piano line, the band lurched into a half-speed rendition of the tune - the same one that once soundtracked a Saturn sedan zipping around exotic locales several years ago - that lent it an unexpected sweetness and vitality all these years later. When Leithauser warbled, "See me age 19 with some dumb haircut from 1960, moving to New York City, live with my friends there we're all taking the same steps, they're foolish now," he traded in his caustic bite and delivered it instead with an appropriately wistful tone of nostalgia; as it turns out, the Walkmen are growing up. They've moved to the city, lived with their friends here, moved away, dispersed, and come back together again. But they're not foolish. After the song, Leithauser joked, "we can play it that way now that we're in our thirties."" [EarFarm]Beach House and The Antlers (who filled in for Cymbals Eat Guitars) opened the show. saw em in philly a few months back.
and they absolutely ripped through the set.
webster hall though seemed a little unsure
and laidback.
maybe its the 30s
maybe it was all the new songs they played.
either way, great band, but they didnt totally
BRING IT.

great music > weak crowd as per usual. maybe that's whay they didn't bring it? The beach house where a total plus as well. worth the whole $20 I spent. which is hard to say these days in new york.

it was a great show except for that fat girl in front of me dancing around like she was at an NSYNC concert or something....she hit me in the face once when she was spinning around, so I dumped the rest of my beer in her purse that was on the floor, wish I could have been there when she realized that one

when you are complaining about the crowd, is it that they're not all hipsters like you or that they're talking? if it's the latter, bitch away, but if it's the former, go back to the burg and shut the fuck up.

How were they compared to the Brooklyn Masonic show in December?

Hey Anon 11:27...
It's hard to say. The band is so on fire now. I'd give the edge to the Masonic show, but Webster show was pretty damn awesome.

but the sound at the Masonic temple sucked!
I couldn't go to this show because I had no budget left *sigh*

i thought they were in great spirits and maybe the best i've ever seen them. beach house though? really? i think they are purposefully boring, as if their goal is to make their songs dull and ponderous.

^^
wrong burrough idiot. I'm complaining about the crowd b/c it was the most lifeless sold out crowd I've ever seen. this of course does not surprise me one bit being new york and all. the talking pisses me off. if you are having a conversation during a show piss off. side note: I was at the barfly in london a while back for a show and some people got rowdy and started talking through just one song and they where asked to leave the floor. not by the staff of the venue. but, the fans collectively. I wish things where more like that in new york...

This was a very good show but I have to admit that I miss the days when the entire band would be drunk before hitting the stage and just go all in for an hour and a half or more.
Glad they actually played "We've Been Had" even in the 30+ version since they've purposely left it out of their set the last few times I've seen them.
Anyone bothering to complain about this bill for $20 is an asshole...
