Tinariwen @ Coachella 2009 (happyjed1)
Tinariwen

This is the 2009 show that's likely to build into a Coachella legend. Tinariwen's sunset set at the Gobi tent. Standing on the stage, the sextet, dressed in traditional Tuareg robes and headwear and veils, the band, part of a nomadic community of Saharan North Africa, draws influences from the music of the region: Malian guitar pop and a little bit of tangled tunings of its fellow Africaners to further south and west, combined with western electric guitars and this ringing, pure tone that's closest American kindred is maybe Lou Reed's hollow, somewhat distorted electric vibe. Mingle this sound with an acoustic strum, hand claps, bass, percussion and something that we mere mortals can only understand as "groove," and you've got something magical.

The band has been performing in one incarnation or another for seventeen years now -- one for every bullet wound that one member (according to the Internets, so take that for what it's worth) is said to have received after leading several raids. The story goes that he was armed only with a guitar on his back and a Kalashnikov in his hands. He was once reportedly doused with gasoline.

Pretty gangsta, yes? [LA Weekly]

Tinariwen has made their way from Coachella to NYC. You can catch them at Le Poisson Rouge tonight (4/24).

I've been looking forward to this for months, never been to Le Poisson Rouge-what should I expect?

awesome

come on... le poisson rouge is not "awesome" it's just ok, it could be a nice venue but the seated shows are awfull if you can't be there early to get a table, the sound is not that good and the lights are seriously bad.
on the other hand, Tinariwen are awesome :)

You are out of your mind! LPR is the best venue to see a show in NYC. The sound is perfection.

it's the best venue in Manhattan.

I haven't been to LPR, but they do seem to consistently book very high quality bands. I saw Tinariwen at Highline about 18 months ago. Excellent show--they are great on record, and even better live. Go check it out tonight.

the best venue is not LPR, Joe's Pub and the Bowery Ballroom are better...

This was a great show!

Disliked LPR, though. I thought I was going to be trampled exiting. The lights were awful -occasionally blinding. Won't hurry back.

great show. this band is tight as fuck. honestly, nearly any 'indie' band doesnt hold a candle to the vibe these guys give off from their shear presence nevermind their amazing playing. decent venue. no complaints about the lights from where i was standing....not really any lights to speak of actually...

i love tinariwen but i agree somehow Hassan on santir and his percussionist stole the show.

but here's the real stupid question: was Ibrahim even there?
