"at yann tiersen, irving plaza with, probably, every french person in new york city." - Soraya Darabi

Yann Tiersen

"the good news is that we got there early enough to watch the whole thing in the very front! the bad news is : yann + an electric guitar + band - his violin = major midlife crisis. i love this man, but it was awful.

he DID move me to tears when he finally picked the violin up for sur le fil - but 99.9% of the time was alt. rock hell. he even managed to butcher the amelie theme beyond recognition. & there was no piano. or accordion.

why yann, why?! i miss the good ol' days" [photobear]

I never saw Yann during the good ol' days. In fact, Amelie aside, I never even listened to Yann in the old days or the new days, but I do agree that the show wasn't what I expected, and it wasn't that exciting. You can see in the pic above that Yann was getting his Thurston on. "Awful" is kind of strong, but maybe that's because I like "alt rock", though I think my issue was that it wasn't "alt" enough, which I took more as a sign that I went to the wrong show. I wished I was at the Walkmen or Throbbing Gristle's 1st NYC performance - both shows happened the same night (4/16). Oh yeah, the violen parts were the best.

Asobi Seksu are on tour with Yann, and they sounded great as the opener (their first-ever show at the venue). A few of their songs sounded really great on the sound system - a few were so-so. All in all, I'm glad they were there. More pictures from the show (and yes there were a lot of French people there) below...

i was there and i agree sort of. i walked in late and the guy at the window was nice enough to give me a comp ticket because of that.

when i came in he was on violin and it was excellent, i loved that the stage floor was miked up so when he stomped it would sound like a kick drum.

but from then on it was alt. rock/post rock. ISIS meets indie-pop. band was run-of-the-mill, nothing too special. i did like some of the epic climaxes but they sounded like a cheap imitation of every other post-rock band.

i really liked the amelie theme song at the end, which they totally changed to make it more rock-y. I dug it. Dissapointing, but glad i didn't waste $25 on half of a mediocre show :)

That's dissappointing to hear of the rare appearance of the violin and no piano/accordion. :(

I'm seeing him later this month in Portland... I guess him playing a rock club makes more sense now. Hmm... bummer...

Yea, if you are going expecting to hear Amelie type stuff or the stuff thats on YouTube, do not waste your money. It is interesting and the tiny bits of violin and Moog make it sorta worthwhile, but it will be a big disappointment for most people.

I felt musically violated at that concert. Yann's on my shit list.

This definitely wins "disappointment concert of the year."

Not only was the music less than mediocre, I found the audience to be very disrespectful towards other concert goers.

Yea... too many drunk frenchmen and mediocre music.

When you want to go to a concert you must be informed on what you are going to see. Amelie soundtrack is over since years and years. So don't be suprise if you didn't love this show. American people really idiots! This really makes laugh me definitely! Idiots!

I don't buy the argument that the Amelie soundtrack is years and years old and therefore we shouldn't expect to hear that genre of music. Even Tiersen's latest release, the soundtrack for Tabarly, is 90% piano! And not a single piano piece throughout the entire show?!

contemporary french "culture" = merde.

as well as being a nation of goofballs, you're also nation of condescending rascists. (towards arabs).

You have to make the difference between his release and soundtrack. It's too bad that you haven't listen to "On tour", the album which is playing on this tour. Four your defense, promoters haven't communicate on this. Hope next time you will enjoy this show because it's quite amazing.

Interesting review. Here's my review (with photos) from the Toronto gig:

I think this tour has been "sold" with the whole Amelie thing, all I saw about the concerts before was "Yann Tiersen-the composer of Amelie soudtrack", nothing about On Tour. So to be informed, people should have come to the official website were it says he gave up the accordion, or to his myspace were you can hear a massacre of Kala, or listen to on tour, or looked at recent videos of his concerts on YouTube. But first, they must have wondered what kind of music he would play. And it was obvious, as it was said on the ads, that he was the Amelie-guy so he would play Amelie.

NB:Yann said Tabarly was a parenthesis in what he was doing.

I think you're all nuts. I love his old stuff and was also expecting to hear it, but instead got to listen to his bad ass rock compositions instead. To dismiss him as just another alt. rock act means you don't listen to very much alt. rock. The guy is amazing no matter what intstrument he is or isn't playing!

Yes, he's amazing. Amelie is his worst album (even if I love it) in comparaison with On Tour. You must be deaf to don't appreciate this or completely dumb (I opt for the second).

Great photos. Was there with my son and we both enjoyed it immensely. A little surprised we got no Tabarly, since he's presumably trying to sell that right now. But for those who are disappointed with the "rock" aspect, you shouldn't be shocked. It was classic "On Tour".

I have to make a confession that in Summer 2006 I drove all the way down to Virginia Beach to see the amazing Asobi Seksu. It was a fabulous show, but the band ended up having lineup problems, hence why they vanished for a while.
