With the accolades pouring in (even my mom wants to see it), Anvil!: The Story Of Anvil (the movie) is preparing to go nationwide after a limited run in the US, followed by a more expanded distribution a few months later.

If you missed them when they were at Gramercy Theatre, and before that BAM, now comes another chance to catch Anvil (the band) in NYC, and in LA. In NYC, Anvil (the band) will perform after a June 3rd screening of the movie at The Village East Cinema. Tickets are on sale. No word on whether the band will be paid for their appearance in goluash or whether they brought their dildos for the slide guitar parts. More details on the NY show, the LA one, and the movie in general, below....

If you haven't seen Anvil (the movie) (and this is a perfect way to see it) (with the actual band in attendance), here's a brief idea of what the film is all about:

In the early 1980s, the Canadian metal band Anvil wrote the thrash blueprint for followers like Anthrax, Metallica, and Slayer. While those bands went on to become metal titans, Anvil faded into obscurity--so much that decades later, the band's core members--guitarist Steve "Lips" Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner--work menial day-jobs even as they continue to churn out little-heard records and dream of rock-star success. Director Sacha Gervasi (who was once a roadie for the band) chronicles the duo's efforts to regain their '80s glory in the funny and touching documentary ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL. As the camera follows Anvil on a European tour organized by an inept manager and beset by comical, this-can't-be-real moments--flubbed itineraries, audiences that can be counted on one hand, club owners who refuse to pay for gigs--it might be easy to mistake ANVIL! for a THIS IS SPINAL TAP mockumentary. But despite the snicker-inducing heavy-metal trappings, this is also a warmly human portrait of two men pursuing their creative passions despite Sisyphean odds... Their struggles will ring true to anyone who has felt the pull of the artist's life and wondered whether it would ever pay off. In Anvil's case, audiences will be rooting for them to finally make it to the big time.

the only thing more pathetic than metal itself are metalheads who don't realize and/or refuse to accept that their time has passed.

"the only thing more pathetic than metal itself are metalheads who don't realize and/or refuse to accept that their time has passed."

Do you have any idea what you're talking about?

the only thing more pathetic than someone who puts down people based on what music they are into, is someone who does so anonymously.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2009 12:47 AM

Been wanting to see this movie, but so far it's only playing at the Angelica, which is a shitty movie theater. Who wants to pay $12.50 for the honor of listening to the subway roll underneath?

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2009 12:49 AM

Yup, saw it at the Anjelika and couldn't believe what a crappy theater it was... $12.50 and subway noise, indeed. (This was the first time I've ever been there, since the films they usually screen are all nauseating mid-brow stuff.)

^comments 2 & 3 are from metalheads who refuse to accept that their time has passed.

Movie was pretty overrated anyway. And I don't been that in a "Brooklynvegan/everything's overrated" kinda way. It was just... OK. Shrug.

boo-fucking-hoo! and there were bands that were doing the same thing as Nirvana before Nirvana became popular...and bands that were doing stuff like the Beatles before the Beatles became popular...and jazz musicians doing stuff like Wynton Marsalis before he became popular...and folk musicians doing stuff that Dylan ripped off...etc, etc. motherfucking etc. Who cares???

And some people just like to enjoy a good documentary. IS THAT OK WITH YOU???????

1:25 - readjust your definition of "good documentary" and i might agree with you.

This is a great movie. Haters, find another hobby than talking shit about musicians who work really hard. Make some music yourself and quit bitching!

"the only thing more pathetic than metal itself are metalheads who don't realize and/or refuse to accept that their time has passed."

Indie rock will burn out well before metal, which has stood the test of time since like the late 60's!
Indie Rock is a parody of it's self now. It used to be good with bands like Guided By Voices, Pavement, and Husker Du.
Now it's all disposible crap. A contest to see who can have the most Ironic clothing and vintage guitars/keyboards. who can have the stupidest band name, and who can make white kids dance.

there is the rumble, which shakes you and the whole theater
like an earthquake
and the theaters are only what 5 or 6 seats wide?
with an aisle!
smaller than most jets!

3:41 - stood the test of time since the late 60's?

Holy Hyperbole, Batman! We're now counting 40 years as "standing the test of time"? You know what has stood the test of time? The Great Wall of China...the Grand Canyon...Diesel combustion engines...Blues music...Baroque architecture...etc. Putting MEHtal in that category shows a high degree of ignorance and a thorough lack of perspective. Then again, you probably have a mullet and haven't ever had a girlfriend...so that should've tipped me off right there. My bad for taking your statement seriously.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2009 1:21 PM

Haven't seen the movie, but the Angelika theater SUCKS. I would go if they were priced a lot better than what they charge now. Constant subway rumble, bad seats, why is it worth $12.50? More importantly, why do they get the better indie movies and not the Landmark Sunshine. The Landmark is WAY better and is actually cheaper.

If a movie is playing at the Angelika, I wait for the DVD.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2009 1:27 PM

The only pathetic thing is when people give up on their dreams and on doing what they love. That is truly living death.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2009 1:35 PM

"everyone I know that saw it loved it"

Funny how most people defending it here haven't actually seen it.

Meanwhile, the NY Times called it "possibly the greatest film yet made about rock and roll".

That's certainly not overrated.

In reality, it's a movie that starts out interesting, goes nowhere fast, and then doesn't really have an ending. You stop giving a shit about these Canadian idiots about an hour in, which makes the rest of the movie kind of tedious. It's... just OK.

Posted by Gary Glitter | May 31, 2009 1:36 PM

"You stop giving a shit about these Canadian idiots about an hour in"

Yeah, when I saw the movie about American idiots Metallica it only took me about 10 minutes to wish they would all die in a fiery plane crash.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2009 1:40 PM

I'll never give up my dream!

My dream is to be an anonymous asshole in the Brooklyn Vegan comment section.

Oh the stupid shit I would say!

If only.

Dream. Dream. Dream.

Posted by A.A. | May 31, 2009 1:46 PM

Well, if Gary Glitter says its just OK, then it must just be OK. Screw the hundreds of professional critics who said it was amazing.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2009 1:54 PM

You're right. Don't bother seeing it and having your own opinion. Critics said it was amazing, so amazing it is!

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2009 2:04 PM

"it might be easy to mistake ANVIL! for a THIS IS SPINAL TAP mockumentary"

That, right there, says everything you need to know about this movie and this band...and MEHtal itself, for that matter.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2009 2:58 PM

"That, right there, says everything you need to know about this movie "

Exactly. The movie is hilarious!

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2009 3:01 PM

I want to see it, but I will wait for the DVD

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2009 3:01 PM

I saw it and loved it. If you were bored to tears by it, I would love to know which movies you consider not boring. Do you need explosions to keep you entertained?
Thumbhang!

I can't wait for the documentary about my other favorite Canadian idiots, RUSH. I think it's coming out this year finally.

Anvil is a lame metal band, but the documentary gives their story depth, more than you would imagine from a band whose whole genre and style is
not relative to anything current. Go figure.

Fuck the hype. Watch it if you want to, don't watch if you don't want to.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2009 6:49 PM

There's good and bad music in every genre but to write metal off point blank is pathetic (and depressing). It reminds me of the early 80's when people would say that punk and/or new wave was awful. From time to time I am lulled into thinking that the days of knee jerk reactions to subsets of music are over but then I'm reminded by some mindless comment that nothing much has changed in 30 years. Oh well!

Anyway, I don't like Anvil, the band, but the story in this doc is poignant. You get the raw ups and downs of the lives of the band members, and the full picture of what it's like to try to make a life in music over the long haul. And it's not overly sentimental, which I appreciated. I don't think there was anyway to really wrap up the ending because it's an ongoing story, so I was okay with that. Overall, I quite liked it.

Steve-O wore an Anvil T-shirt to the MEHTV Movie Awards. (Not that I watched the show; I saw a photo of him on the red carpet.)

Ditto for my fave American idiots, Pentagram, if they ever get the money to finish the thing. But I wouldn't wish anything bad on Bobby Liebling. He's done enough to himself already.

Saw this last night. The movie was quite moving and then to see the band right there in front of me in all their Metal Glory was such a blast!

Lipps introduced Sasha and thanked him for making his dreams come true. They both got emotional, tears flowed. Sasha introduced "Metal On Metal" as "The Heavy Metal National Anthem!"

They killed it, left us wanting more!
