So the story, from various sources put together, seem to be this: Dave Gahan and his ex-ex junky wife scored a huge stash of smack in Tel Aviv, a stash which was supposed to get smacked-out
Dave through the first leg of the tour. But ex-ex-junky wifey then got greedy and absconded with the score of smack, and our Dave started going into opiate withdrawals before their next scheduled show (which causes, among other things, symptoms identical to severe "gastroenteritis"). A huge fight ensued between junky Dave and junky wife, and the police were needed as it got very ugly. So now Dave has no dope, which means he is unable to perform. They are trying to dry him out enough to get him on the road, whether through methadone or other means. And meanwhile, DM the corporate, multi-millionaire machine is lying to the public, or better yet really not saying much at all, about what is going on. It's not cool in these ultra-corporate days to have your lead singer be a junkie. That is so grunge, so 1990s!

"that is more like it. so rock and roll..."

I agree, Michaelways, this takes me back to the time when the Mode were truly great, around the mythic Songs of Faith & Devotion tour era. We need Dave Gahan to be our junkie savior, to redeem our sins. That's his job, so time for him to step to it!

"Dr. Benway don't quit your day job."

Wouldn't dream of it. I love being a croaker. Got my script pad at the ready. You need an appointment, just let me know!

I saw Dave Gahan in the West Village Monday afternoon. He didn't look too sick to me.

"I saw Dave Gahan in the West Village Monday afternoon. He didn't look too sick to me."

Soon as he got back to NYC and got "fixed" up, no problemo! I wouldn't be surprised to hear of a divorce coming up next: ex-ex-junky wife taking off with Dave's stash just before a big gig wasn't too cool.

anyone have any money for me? let me know thanks!

if it were a "serious" illness of some sort, i'm sure the band/DM machine would release his med records to show DG is really and truly clean.

they care about public reaction, but not that much. this is more about getting insurance coverage for for DG. if he is indeed still on dope, his and the band's premiums will skyrocket. so they're keeping it as hush hush as possible.

and btw why did he have to be rushed back to nyc for tests for a stomach virus? Turkey isn't exactly the outer reaches of Mongolia.

Posted by Dr. Whackenstein | May 20, 2009 8:55 PM

Why can't he just be sick! Anyone can get sick and just because it's Dave he can't be and it must be something else! He must be on drugs againg!
You know what! You make me sick! I get sick of al you people already condemnting him just because he has a drug history! I think he will be very disappointent to know that such stories are rumoring around. I am not saying he is a saint but this is just to disgusting. If you don't like him or their music don't bother to react on these messages. You only make it worse.
Do you really think he would do this to his family, his children?
So then you are stupid, as stupid as he was when he did it 13 to 15 years ago!
So and that's al I want to say about it!

"and btw why did he have to be rushed back to nyc for tests for a stomach virus? Turkey isn't exactly the outer reaches of Mongolia."

He fell ill in Greece, not Turkey. While Greece isn't "the outer reaches of Mongolia," either, rich Greeks often go abroad for medical treatment.

"He fell ill in Greece, not Turkey. While Greece isn't "the outer reaches of Mongolia," either, rich Greeks often go abroad for medical treatment."

so you're saying that Greece doesn't have basic diagnostic facilities to make a determination about about a common stomach problem?
hard to believe.

be that as it may, why not release the med records and settle the matter?

Posted by Dr. Whack | May 21, 2009 9:38 AM

He has Crone's Disease. When it flares up, medical attention is immediate causing down time. He must have eaten something he shouldn't have. If you don't know what Crone's disease is, look it up!

"so you're saying that Greece doesn't have basic diagnostic facilities to make a determination about about a common stomach problem?

No, I'm saying the diagnosis of "a common stomach problem" made by Greek doctors may have been inaccurate and he's actually suffering from something less common and more complex.

Posted by Lambros of Astoria | May 22, 2009 8:37 AM

He's suffering from 'Jones' Disease.' He be jonesing for a good ol' speedball!

Posted by Dr. Benway | May 22, 2009 9:04 AM

"He's suffering from 'Jones' Disease.' He be jonesing for a good ol' speedball!"

i think you are jumping to conclusions, Dr. Benway. as you well know months and months of IV opiate infusions must administered, and then only after careful monitoring of the patient, can the determination of Jones' Disease be made. not an easy diagnosis. certainly not by a greek doctor.

Posted by Dr Whack | May 22, 2009 9:39 AM

^

should read "must BE administered"

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2009 11:46 AM

Good to know BV. I'm sure there are tons of people on this site who had plans to go the shows in Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania.

Thanks for the headsup!

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2009 11:50 AM

True, Dr. Whack, though I believe the patient has been transferred to Manhattan for his Jones disease-related "infusions."

Posted by Dr. Benway | May 22, 2009 12:50 PM

Let's face it, the new album stinks, these guys are over, and Marty is forcing Gahan to go out and sing "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy The Silence" 100,000 times and Dave must HATE doing that stuff by now. Marty is only interested in money, something Gahan himself has said in interviews many, many times. So, unable to face this awful, mammoth tour, Gahan is looking for an escape. And what is his preferred form of escape? Drugs? DOH!

Posted by Master Bators | May 22, 2009 1:15 PM

funny that the drugs are the only thing that makes this band seem remotely relevant anymore.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2009 1:43 PM

Now greedyguts Marty Gore is going around posting as "Dr. Maria," very imaginative! You're ready to kill Dave to make more and more money, you swine. You know a junkie like Dave can't handle a mega-tour like that, but you don't care. You never have. You are a cold, sick bastard.

Posted by Dr. Benway | May 22, 2009 3:21 PM

The Drugs do work, and they make Dave sing verse, but without them he's S.O.L.!

Posted by Wackadoo Wimpy | May 22, 2009 4:34 PM

Depeche Mode are forced to admit that they haven't been worth a shite since SoF&D, that Marty Gore just wants to line his pockets no matter what kind of crap he puts out, and that he'd replace Gahan in a second if he thought he could get away with it.

Posted by Wizzy Wackadoo | May 22, 2009 4:40 PM

"funny that the drugs are the only thing that makes this band seem remotely relevant anymore."

Really. But how many rock bands are known for their drug use these days? If you say too much to a rock journalist, some dick at Homeland Security googles you when you try to cross a border, sees your interview where you brag about doing dope, and you are screwed. So everybody lies. And of course there's far more ways to "level out" these days with so much rehabbing services available. If there'd been stuff like that years ago, geniuses like Tommy Bolin (look him up) might have survived to give us more great music.

Posted by Deep Purple | May 22, 2009 4:53 PM

Yes, my dear Alan-Dr. Benway..
You would like to have your pockets as full as mine!
You´ve missed it..
Keep spreading shit around, you won´t change the 30 years of DM success, and the fact you quit..
