High Places @ Stuy Town Oval 2008 (thepiratehat)
High Places

High Places were one of the bands to play Stuyvesent Town's Music on the Oval series last year. This year's series will run Wednesday nights June 10th - July 15th...

Music on the Oval will feature free family-friendly concerts at 7:00 p.m. New Yorkers and visitors will groove to a different pre-show DJ each night starting at 6:00 p.m...The Stuyvesant Town Oval is located between 16th and 18th Streets and Avenues A & B and the entrance is off First Avenue and 16th Street.
We already mentioned that Jay Reatard is the family-friendly artist playing there on July 1st. Kaki King, The Budos Band and a few others are playing there this summer too. Full schedule below...

Music on the Oval 2009 Schedule

* June 10 - The Budos Band - Based in Staten Island, Daptone recording artists Budos Band has become one of New York's finest exporters of Afro-tinged classic soul, musically beloved (and employed) by local queen Sharon Jones and international superstar Amy Winehouse. Daptone family's DJ Honeydripper will kick the night off.

* June 17 - Phenomenal Handclap Band - The group combines the best attributes of Brooklyn's underground music scene, circa 2009: the chops to emulate an encyclopedic knowledge of rock and pop history, plus the love of disco to make the whole thing boogie-able. DJ Duane Harriott will get the crowed warmed up.

* June 24 - Easy Star All-Stars - New York's hometown reggae heroes, Easy Star All-Stars have gained themselves an incredible worldwide following by locking a rocksteady Jamaican groove to the classic songs of Pink Floyd, Radiohead and the Beatles. Easy Star's solo keyboard phenom Ticklah will start the night off right.

* July 1 - Jay Reatard - Using a never-ending barrage of under-three-minute pop nuggets, Jay Reatard gloriously upholds Memphis, Tennessee's greasy garage-punk tradition; his upcoming Matador Records debut ensures the tradition's fine future. DJs Doug Mosurock and Mr. Vacation also like their rock music fun and funky!

* July 8 - Forro in the Dark - From the international state of the Lower East Side, comes Forro in the Dark, the Big Apple's pre-eminent practitioners of forro, a northeastern Brazilian party music part samba and part country soul, that's been setting Nublu a-dancing since 2002. (David Byrne approved!) DJ Probus will get things started.

* July 15 - Kaki King - Led by guitar heroine Katherine King (whose shredding skills have been utilized by the likes of Foo Fighters and Tegan & Sara), Brooklyn's Kaki King veers between progressive, loud rock and roll jams, and melodically beautiful acoustic excursions. Justin Carter and Raspberry Jones' DJ sets have been known to be equally eclectic.

Kaki King also has a show coming up at Glasslands.

Is Stuyvesant a nice place to live (other then location)?

the renovated apts are kinda good deals and are spacious...but the location kinda sucks...yr on pretty much the equivalent of 17th street and ave c...very very east.

but hey, it sure beats bushwick.

you have it all backwards! stuy town is a great location but the renovated apt are garbage & the prices are way to high. they have actually been lowering the rent on some spaces & turning them to dorms because there is a huge vacancy %. you should check out:

This is actually pretty impressive lineup. I love this town.

When does the schedule for The Edge 11211 come out?

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2009 12:30 AM

TBA was supposed to play this year. I guess they got bumped off the schedule again.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2009 12:40 AM

i'm pretty sure TBA will be announced soon. i think it's a double bill with TBD.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2009 3:23 AM

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2009 4:53 AM

TBA and TBD are far from "family friendly," I mean come on

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2009 9:10 AM

TBA was announced but opted to play live on Jools Holland last minute instead. Priorities, people...

Stuy Town apartments are "kinda good deals"??? Not only are they expensive, they current owners of the property are notorious for trying to jack up the rent at subsequent lease renewals. I don't live there but I have lived very near to there since 1997. The sort of people who live there now are completely different than the sort of people who used to live there. Most notably, they are suckers with more money than sense. Maybe there are a few that aren't but then those people don't seem to plan to stay long; they seem like the sort of people who plan to marry and breed and move someplace else soon.

"Jay Reatard is going on tour in June and July. That includes two NYC shows. The first, on Wednesday, July 1st, will take place in Stuyvesent Town! That one, billed as a "Stuytown Oval Concert", will presumably be free, outdoors, and have a mosh pit full of babies."

2:08, it WILL be free. fuck you.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2009 10:40 AM

^^Dumbass, 2:08 meant he wouldn't see a Jay Reatard show even if it were free.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2009 10:47 AM

He he funny, i will even not see Jay Reatard when if it is free with dinner:)

That stuytown lux living blog is one of the funniest things I've read in a while. I hope they do a bit where "family friendly" Jay Reatard is juxtaposed with the youtube clip of Jay beating the living shit out of some kid with his guitar from stage.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2009 3:36 PM

Can't figure out why the fuck Jay Reatard would play this...stuytown blows.

Posted by ROCK STARchitect | May 12, 2009 4:15 PM

wtf is family friendly? do you think he'll do i'm watching you? you always were a cunt? or will he change it to you always were somewhat disingenuous.
