Grizzly Bear

"The band has two songwriting powers, Ed Droste and Daniel Rossen, who both sing. Grizzly Bear prefers full-band songwriting credits, so it's not clear who's responsible for what.

But when Mr. Droste sings lead, the harmonies seem to come from the natural properties of the voice; when Mr. Rossen sings lead, the songs get browner, based in the harmony of his unusual guitar tunings." [NY Times]

Grizzly Bear played their second of two shows at NYC's Town Hall last night (5/29). They play one more NYC show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Sunday (5/31) before leaving on tour with Here We Go Magic. Setlist and more on the first night at Town Hall, HERE. More pictures from that same night - Brooklyn Youth Choir and fancy light show included, below....

Great pics, great show.

Saw the show tonight, and it was great, but not as good as the first night. That choir brought it.

The light set up looks magical. These guys have inspired my song writing so much in the past year. Fucking visual landscapes. Can't wait to see them at MHOW Sunday.

Also,

utterly gorgeous show tonight.

I loved the haze floating throughout the entire venue.

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 2:33 AM

vocally, other than fleet foxes, these guys are unmatched. I prefer GB's songs, but they are both great singers...amazing show.

Posted by vocally | May 30, 2009 2:35 AM

the venue looks totally uncomfortable for a show but incredible. and the light show looks spectacular.

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 2:41 AM

Waiting for people to get really aggressive and angry about this band's success...is it too late on a friday for that? I'll check back tomorrow.

259:

as someone said previously, trying to evoke that preemptively isn't clever, funny, or even going to serve your purpose. wait, what is your purpose? bitching prematurely?

ps. i think grizzly bear is okay.

wow- look at all that fun sitting down!!!

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 3:32 AM

burp fart shit ah

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 3:59 AM

Inevitably, someone on here will bitch and whine about the sound, the band, and the lights. Its commonplace these days on this site. Joe jackass will say the lights blinded him
And the sound deafened him and the band plays their songs in a rigid fashion. They're all just jealous and disrespecting tools.

What I do know though is that show was so beautiful that I left with chills. It just seems like their NYC shows keep stepping up to provide defining moments in their career. BAM, now this.

I wish you all could have been there. The band brought it! And yes, that light show was so ridiculously spectacular. I don't know who that dude is, but get him to do all the local shows. Damn.

Im going to london just to see them. Im from Iceland.

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 9:41 AM

the stage lighting and design with the choir looks awesome. but you have to admit, the lighting bares serious resemeblance to the Radiohead lighting from their last tour, especially from their gig at APW. thoughts? ???

Posted by ThomYorke | May 30, 2009 9:47 AM

My thought is: top notch performers. The drummer is the fucking secret here. He was so on point.

great show last night!

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 10:25 AM

I was at the Friday night show, which didn't include the choir but instead a string quartet that didn't really add all that much. Still an amazing show.

I was disappointed however by Here We Go Magic. Barely anybody bothered to come in, and the lack of a crowd at an outsized venue seemed to have rattled Luke Temple. I have the HWGM album and love it, as well as Temple's solo stuff. But live he was having a lot of trouble translating the hypnotic/choppy/looped sound with the band. Only two songs the band really owned. Hopefully he gets his sound down better as the tour progresses. Right now the concept is incomplete.

Lame and boring.

Posted by Dan | May 30, 2009 10:42 AM

They were better when they toured with the black crows. so bad now.

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 10:49 AM

That chick on bass adds so much with her croons.

@ 4:30

are you so emotionally fragile that you actually get bothered by what some people post on an anonymous website?

do people need permission from you to post views that may differ from your own?

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 11:30 AM

true. They are highly overrated. I'd rather listen to Mixel Pixel.

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 11:31 AM

I respect how much money and time they invested in this show, but they still remain a boring band with minimal talent. But they have a GREAT manager! hehe

not exactly a glowing review from Ben Ratcliff, NYT, above: He says "I left Town Hall grinding my teeth."

Posted by ouch | May 30, 2009 12:02 PM

damn lights looked gorgeous. they better bust that out for mhow show. i'd also hit it

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 12:15 PM

"They are highly overrated. I'd rather listen to Mixel Pixel."

Mixel Pixel are criminally underrated!

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 12:24 PM

Does anyone have the set list from last night?

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 12:30 PM

LOL @ Mixel Pixel comments....

They awwwight
That Ratcliff dude seems like a reviewer that went into the show not liking the band ahead of time, knowing full well he wasn't going to be into the show. Seems a bit pointless, probably an attempt to counter all the glowing press, I guess they call it "backlash"?

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 12:36 PM

They played with the ACME string quarter last night for three or four songs, played Lullabye, The Knife and closed with an all acoustic version of All We Ask. Can't exactly remember the rest of the setlist although they did do We Live Together twice, once without ACME and a second time with them in a shorter, alternate version.

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 12:54 PM

^ it's called "i live with you," and no, they didn't.

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 12:56 PM

The Brooklyn Youth Choir was great!!! really added to the show!

Posted by shosho | May 30, 2009 2:57 PM

Colorado last night was one of all-time best concert moments.

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 5:02 PM

I wish Mixel Pixel and Grizzly Bear would tour together like Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper did. as long as it ends with a big plane crash and we never have to hear about them again.

Did anyone in the band explain what the word Veckatimsit means?

Posted by Matt | May 31, 2009 11:30 AM

Veckatimest is a deserted island off Cape Cod or Martha's Vineyard or one of those fancy-pants type places that Ed was raised in.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2009 11:40 AM

still dreaming of the town hall shows.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2009 11:53 AM

is it just me or has anybody else noticed that since Brooklyn Vegan has begun to devote 50% of their coverage to metal, the comments have gotten even stupider? Just sayin...and I like metal. Or should I say MEHtal?
