Raglani (with gear) @ No Fun Fest (Friday) (by Lori Baily)
Raglani

St Louis's Riverfront Times reports, "Terrible news out of New York, where local experimental artist Raglani performed at the esteemed No Fun Fest on Friday night [at Music Hall of Williamsburg]. From a message Eric Hall left on my Facebook page":

Just to let you know, after playing No Fun Fest in NYC last night Joe Raglani's van was broken into and all of his equimpent was stolen. This includes the very expensive and rare synth he's spent years building up from modular parts and many other unique and custom devices. Needless to say, the rest of his tour has been cancelled. He'll likely need encouragement to motivate himself to begin anew. I'd hate our community to lose his output
The painful list of stolen gear below...

daaaaamn, that is a painful list :(

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 4:19 PM

That sucks. Any idea where exactly they were parked? Some of the businesses around there have security cameras outside.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 4:19 PM

Hey Brooklynvegan, put up some fucking pictures or at least a damn review of this festival. You reviewed the damn Popfest and not this? You suck.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 4:19 PM

Shoulda been you, Dan Deacon.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 4:27 PM

Shit. I'd fucking quit the business if that was me. That list is painful to look at. I feel for the guy....

4:19 - Wow, you're a charmer. Ever heard of the word "please"? Do everyone a favor and go choke on a dick and die.

I agree with anon 4:19

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 4:29 PM

we nyc musicians need to remind our colleagues from out of town not to leave their gear in their van... sad but true :(

Posted by dividend | May 19, 2009 4:30 PM

4:30 - that's true for any city. and most places in NY are safer than some other cities, say Baltimore/Detroit/DC/Atlanta/etc.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 4:32 PM

It's really bad in parts of brooklyn. I was talking to a band at CMJ who caught someone suspiciously staking out their van. They were much more careful after that.

"You (Raglani)will face tough times. You will certainly have doubts, and let me tell you because I know I did when I was your age," she said. "Remember that you are blessed. Remember that in exchange for those blessings, you must give something back. You must reach back and pull someone up. You must bend down and let someone else stand on your shoulders so that they can see a brighter future."

I agree with dividend--bands, never leave your gear in an automobile overnight!!!!

Posted by Regular reader | May 19, 2009 4:37 PM

if you have the right insurance (which you should have when you have that much crazy gear) it should be at LEAST partially covered

Posted by Ian | May 19, 2009 4:45 PM

some of that stuff seems like it'd be hard to valuate, insurance wise. Dag. This poor guy

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 4:55 PM

"Do everyone a favor and go choke on a dick and die."

-Subtle words from the expert charmer.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 4:58 PM

No Fun Fest is a huge gathering of out-of-town artists with a lot of unique gear. Thieves know that. Another artist, Emeralds, got their stuff stolen as well.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 4:59 PM

4:58 - someone who does not show respect to others does not deserve it in response.

Posted by brooklynomnivore | May 19, 2009 5:06 PM

Where was Lee Ranaldo during all of this? Very suspicious.....

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 5:08 PM

Where was Todd P during all of this? Very suspicious...

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 5:11 PM

jesus fuck todd p

Yep, everyone knows not to leave gear overnight, but Raglani and Keith Fullerton Whitman had just stopped for a slice of pizza and came out to some one finishing loading all their shit into a car. When they ran towards the guy he jumped in the car and tried to run them down. Steve Hauschildt, of Emeralds, was Raglani's tour-mate and had his stuff taken in the same incident. If anyone knows where this stuff might likely wind up (I know in STL there are always shops to check first if you've had anything stolen), please pass that info along and spread the word to anyone else who could maybe help. Much of it is too unique to not stand out to anyone in the know on this equipment. It may be asking a bit of you, but this is tens of thousands of dollars worth of gear. As far as his music goes, this is not just one thing, or even some things, but this is everything.

5:06, Ok, Ok that came off very badly and harsh, I admit. But really, it's important that Brooklynvegan covers this festival, not only because it is held in Brooklyn but because it is a highly respectable international gathering of noise acts.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 5:27 PM

shit that sucks

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 5:44 PM

"Shoulda been you, Dan Deacon."

Ignorant. Nobody deserves to have something this integral to their work stolen.

Brooklynvegan is just slow sometimes.

Alright!

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 6:14 PM

oh god that is the worst, hope it looks up somehow

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 6:57 PM

I met Steve outside the fest and he was super stoked to be on tour with raglani. This really sucks. Only thieves who knew what they were after would steal this stuff.

Posted by Lori | May 19, 2009 7:46 PM

i am so tired of hearing how people were just gone for a minute, getting a slice of pizza etc.

why not leave someone in the van or near the van?

these are crimes of opportunity. you leave $10,000+ of anything unattended in ANY city and you are asking for a spanking.

sorry to say.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 7:50 PM

word. i feel for this guys...but this was a totally amateur move on their behalf.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 11:16 PM

Play them off, Keyboard Cat.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2009 11:56 PM

^^Dude, that is NOT cool.

Definitely not appropriate (...but I laughed anyway...probably even harder because it wasn't appropriate).

Posted by the original poster of the MEH comments | May 20, 2009 12:13 AM

sucks to be the dude with actual gear at no fun.

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2009 3:13 AM

aww man, this sucks so hard to hear. I hope raglani doesnt get discouraged from playing at all.... this is just the universe's way of saying: start over. try again. minimalism is OK.
