Dark Was the Night (finale) (photo by Natasha Ryan)
DArk Was the Night

Last night's Dark Was the Night show was amazing. My only disappointment was that David Byrne didn't come back to sing with Sharon Jones during the finale/encore (he sang with almost everyone else!). He actually watched the encore from the audience. And by the encore I mean, after Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings finished their set, most of the artists (Feist, Bon Iver, The National, Dirty Projectors, My Brightest Diamond, etc...) on the bill came back on stage to do a We-Are-The-World/Kumbaya/folkie/feel-good traditional group, acoustic sing-along of Pete Seeger's Woodie Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land". One of the Dessners introduced the song by saying they thought it would be nice to do it in honor of Pete Seeger's 90th birthday and jokingly thanked everyone for coming to Radio City instead of Madison Square Garden.

You knew something else was going to happen because The Dap Kings, though not part of the sing-along, were still lingering in the background with their instruments. Half-way through the song, Sharon Jones popped on stage and walked right in front of all of them. The crowd went nuts. Sharon grabbed a mic and they all stopped playing. She said something like, "I don't want to burst y'all's bubbles, but we're going to do our version". And they did. It looked something like the picture above. It sounded (and looked) something like the video below.

Many more pictures and a review of both of last night's big shows are coming soon NOW POSTED.

same song 2 years ago at Amoeba...

Sharon Jones definitely owned the stage last night. I'm glad they had her go on last.

"This Land is Your Land" is NOT a Pete Seeger song, it is Woody Guthrie's.

That is a REALLY good point which escaped my mind when they said they were doing it in honor of Pete Seeger. thanks!

Great show, loved the new songs from the National with Justin Vernon getting the guitar solo.

Posted by tremags | May 4, 2009 10:58 AM

St. Vincent was also up there during the finale.

What happened to Grizzly Bear? Weren't they on the list at some point?

Great show. It would have been nice to have a few more surprise guests, but the show was for a great cause so it's hard to complain too much.

Amazing night. Bon Iver/Justin Vernon was the King. Big Red Machine + Flume = Incredible...

I am much more curious about a review of the Pete Seeger bday show at MSG, TIA...

Hope there are more pics to come...

Posted by BTW | May 4, 2009 11:07 AM

they didn't say it was a pete seeger song. bryce introduced it as a "song pete seeger made popular."

DIRTY PROJECTORS! so great to see the new songs in such a huge setting! Good for them! Not sure they are ready for that yet, but they sounded great.

the national need to hang it up

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2009 11:14 AM

the national had a big part in putting this together. you need to hang it up.

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2009 11:17 AM

could Feist look anymore whiter in that clip?

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2009 11:21 AM

felt like at all times there were at least one member of either the national or bon iver on stage - and that's a good thing - everyone did a great job with all the collaborations, nothing felt forced, a great night of music.

I was at the concert last night, and it was really something special. Here's a short clip of Pete leading the audience in an "Amazing Grace" sign-a-long:

Bon Iver was the best of the evening. But all were very good, including Sharon Jones. Good night of music.

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2009 11:35 AM

this land is your land was made famous by seeger.

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2009 11:37 AM

Seriously, the National looked like they could care less. I was bored watching a bored band.

It was a great show last night, and was all the more likable for coming off a bit ragged. Anyone else think a highlight of the night was Feist's version of Look At What The Light Did Now? One of my favorite songs, and it was a great surprise to hear it.

Posted by brian | May 4, 2009 11:44 AM

they played two brand new songs in front of 6000 people. that's boring?

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2009 11:48 AM

The National were great! I agree that Bon Iver and Sharon Jones were great but would add that David Byrne's "Don't Fence Me In" was another highlight. The final song with Sharon Jones schooling all the kids in how to sing a song was absofuckinglutely great.

I was sipping my morning coffee, thinking to myself 'Man -- Sharon Jones just *killed it* last night..." when the BrooklynVegan tweet pops up "i never finished last night, but Sharon Jones also killed it..." I think anyone who didn't leave early would agree.

The pacing of the show left a lot to be desired; By way of comparison, the recent Red Hot show at B.A.M. felt much more tuned to entertaining a live (rather than a recorded) audience. David Byrne gave some much-needed adrenalin boosts along the way and My Brightest Diamond's "Feeling Good" was another highlight.

If only Sharon Jones had some stage presence...

Posted by mark | May 4, 2009 11:57 AM

awesome show... i'd totally by a cd of the live show, or download the mp3s if anybody's got em. ;)

just didn't seem worth it without Sufjan

Posted by theblood | May 4, 2009 12:02 PM

The two new National songs were great...

st. vincent walked by me while i was getting beers. She is so beautiful, my jaw dropped.

@ 11:57, ha ha!

An amazing night of music highlighted by Bon Iver and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. $38 to sit in the most comfortable theatre for a few hours on a Sunday night watching incredible talent collaborate was money well spent.

The National's two new songs were great, especially "England."

Posted by Blackraptor. | May 4, 2009 12:28 PM

Bon Iver was so beautiful. I got chills down my spine like 10 times. Big Red Machine and Flume especially. I loved all of it except for that first Byrne/Dirty Projectors song. And I loved the National set. They didnt play their crowd pleasersbut the new songs were awesome, especially the last one with Bon Iver playing a guitar solo at the end!

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2009 1:10 PM

it was all insanity. especially matt berninger joining bon iver on big red machine. someone better have recorded that.

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2009 1:13 PM

@ Anon 1:!3 : I did and will try to upload it tonight. I was in the front row center of the first balcony, hopefully it came out pretty good.

Posted by tremags | May 4, 2009 1:34 PM

npr was supposed to have recorded it, should be up in a week or two

The show last night was pretty good with one clear exception, the Dirty Projectors. With their screeching, they're terrible melodies, and lack of anything AT ALL interesting, they could well be the worst band I've ever heard. Some friends came late and missed their songs, and I felt completely jealous of their experience. Thank goodness they went first because the night only got better.

Sharon Jones killed it! She was amazing. Feist also rocked it. One of the new National songs was good (the London one was not as good).

Overall a great show, but I've never heard anything worse than the Dirty Projectors.

Posted by ABJ | May 4, 2009 1:58 PM

what was the name of that new national song? something cry baby?

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2009 2:01 PM

vanderbilt something?
dirty projectors are one of the most creative bands anywhere. and all the artists last night took insane risks. new songs and collaborations in front of 6000 people. all in the service of charity. fucking ruled.

that's some STUPID onion.
