Terminal 5

If you're going to see Animal Collective at Terminal 5 tonight, check out the new roof deck. Still under construction, but now open, the partially-covered, outdoor space will feature plenty of seating, a bar, bathrooms and a place for smokers to smoke legally while checking out a view of the city (though not one of the band playing on stage).

Great. Even more space where you can't see the band.

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2009 5:50 PM

Jeez, what a bunch of grumpy pants here!

"Great. Even more space where you can't see the band."

Zing! Was thinking the same...at least it's probably more pleasant up there. Hahaaa. God, T5 is fucking awful.

There's going to be a lot of fighting to sit on those two benches.

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2009 6:15 PM

I don't get why everyone always hates on T5. For a big venue (and a necessary-sized one for the many that-sized standing room shows that come through NY) its really not that bad!

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2009 6:21 PM

hopefully thats where all the talkers go to now

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2009 6:42 PM

I've seen REAL photos of the roof deck. It's pretty sweet-- even if you can't see some overrated indie band from it.

Yeah, I don't get all the hating on Terminal 5 either. I mean, sure, it's no perfect venue, but it's no worse than shitholes like Webster Hall & Roseland. I swear people just don't like it b/c of the location, but whatever. I live in that 'hood so maybe that's why I don't mind it as much.

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2009 6:47 PM

I still have no clue why people hate T5 so much except for the fact that its all the way on the west side.

Sound has always been good there, great views from uncrowded balconies, can always sneak a good view on the floor.

Sure it isn't as intimate as Bowery, but its definitely better than soundwise and designwise than Webster/Roseland.

I've seen 6 shows there in the past year and have yet to have a bad experience (except from eating one of those empanadas... but that was my fault)

terminal shit

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2009 7:12 PM

Some people just don't understand that venues of that size are necessary (especially in NYC where too many people go to concerts for bands they don't even like). Comparisons to Bowery and Webster are dumb. The applicable comparisons are Hammerstein and Roseland and I will take Terminal 5 over both, despite it's poor location.

If you want to see your favorite indie band in a smaller venue, live in a different city.

And moving back to the topic at hand, I welcome this new addition to T5. Sounds pretty sweet.

I live close to Terminal 5. Therefore have all the reason to like it, but I hate the place.

- The sound is terrible unless it's dance music. Anybody who thinks the place sounds better than Bowery is deaf.

- You can only see the stage from maybe 60% of the place. However they sell tickets for full capacity, which makes the spots from where you can see the stage extremely crowded and uncomfortable at sold out shows.

It's bearable at best for shows that aren't sold out. I wouldn't step in there for sold out shows. Last year The Racounteurs at Coachella was one of the best live music experiences I had. Their show at Terminal 5 was one of the most miserable. I don't like Roseland and Hammerstein either, but at those you can at least get mezzanine tickets if you're lucky and sound is usually better at Hammerstein. The sound at Roseland is even worse than T5.

It's possible to have larger standing room only venues that are also good. Unfortunately we don't have any in this city. Therefore once an act gets to bigger venues than Webster Hall, I stop seeing them until they're big enough to play one of the many great seated venues in the city or until they're back at the smaller venues again.

hey I'm an industry person and I love the place - the views from the VIP balcony are great plus the VIP blacony is also really close to the little bar in the back and not so many people go to, which makes it super easy to get free drinks with your comp tix.

Go T5!

I look forward to booking tours and discussing business with agents and label heads on the rooftop! this Summer!

did Terminal 5 move to the desert?

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2009 10:06 PM

^^good idea

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2009 10:55 PM

Dedorrian should headline there

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2009 11:14 PM

bad sound, terrible sight lines.

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2009 12:28 AM

sucky sucky place. in a fair world, Bowery Presents would have gone bankrupt off this poorly conceived venture, but unfortunately indie music is a monopolistic cabal and terrible business decisions go unpunished

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2009 12:39 AM

"animal conceptions show"????

this sounds pretty rad

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2009 1:09 AM

when its not sold out its a pretty decent venue, but otherwise its just way too crammed and u need to get there way early to get a decent spot

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2009 2:23 AM

This is a horrendous place

obscenely awful acoustics

terrible sight lines

oversold

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2009 2:58 AM

Wretched venue.

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2009 8:53 AM

The hate is coming from fanatical anti-smoking sheep.

Smokers deserve a place to light up and relax.

Thanks T5.

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2009 8:54 AM

People who nitpck about the acoustics at rock shows are assholes.

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2009 9:40 AM

"People who nitpck about the acoustics at rock shows are assholes."

Music is sound, isn't it? Don't you want the music to sound good when you go to a show? I'll take great sound over decent sightlines any day. The sound at T5 is like drowning in quicksand.

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2009 9:55 AM

the only people who hate terminal 5 are people from idaho who check music blogs.

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2009 10:06 AM

The hate is coming from people who want to see a good show in a good venue. T5 is the worst place to see a band in this city. As stated before the acoustics suck, horrible sight lines and oversold.

Does anyone really want to watch a band from the 2nd balcony? Just because they can physically fit X amount of people in T5 doesn't mean they should sell that many tickets.

I'm convinced that the few positive reviews of T5 in the comments section are from people with a vested interest in seeing it turn a profit.

FUCK T5.

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2009 10:19 AM

I completely agree about the terrible sound at T5. It is better than Roseland (how can it be worse?), but worse than Hammerstein. But complaints about sightlines? I never have problems seeing a show at T5 and almost every concert I have been to there was sold out and I showed up late.

But because of the terrible sound I will not bother going for a band if I am not really into them. Horrible sounding venue.

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2009 10:36 AM

Terminal Illness 5. If you like this venue you are either deaf, dumb or blind. Why bands play here is a testament to moths to a flame- what they don't see is that that flame is a fucking bug light. ZAP! You just got a shitty show! Fuck that place.

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2009 11:50 AM

I can hear well, am smart and have 20/20 vision and I like Terminal 5. Maybe you should have your sense tested and checked 11:50!
