The Shins

"[The Shins] launched off with 'Australia' which is one of my favorites and I couldn't help but get giddy. They then proceeded through the next two songs on Wincing the Night Away without stopping. After a song or two, they introduced a special guest joining them on violin, and when I saw her, I was visibly the only person flipping out: It was Rebecca Zeller, the violinist of Ra Ra Riot!

A few songs come and go, equipped with some new songs (that they didn't have the decency to tell us the titles of), and a cover from, and I quote "One of the best f*cking bands in the world", also known in James Mercer's mind as The Beach Boys, all leading up to the best performance of the night: 'Caring is Creepy'. Every one in the room was singing their lungs out to this song, so much so that even though I was very close to James Mercer I couldn't hear him! When everyone is that connected and 'into' a song like that, how can that not affect you? " [Danish Poet]

That review is from the first (5/18) of two nights the Shins played NYC's Terminal 5. The second was last night (5/21), and there was also a NJ show at Wellmont Theater (5/17). Delta Spirit opened all of them, and at least on the second NYC night, they destroyed a guitar. More pictures from last night (destroyed guitar included), with a Shins video and the setlist from 5/18, below...

By The Shins, do you mean The James Mercer project? I could barely deal with the band before, but knowing Mercer let go longtime members so he can control what he himself wants the band to sound like sounds more like a solo project. I wonder if he's been hanging out with Billy Corgan lately.

helpless?

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2009 12:49 PM

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2009 12:50 PM

12:45 -- the Shins have always been the James Mercer project. I'm ok with that.

12:50 - I think its Guild Starfire

so glad that p*ssy who threw candy out at the crowd while playing keyboard and then beatup his model girlfriend when he got home is out of the band.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2009 1:08 PM

1:03- thanks...you are correct.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2009 1:09 PM

Was David Bryne there? That's weird. He's my neighbor. I think I spotted David Byrne there, as well.

@12:50 That is (or was) a Gretsch G5120 Electromatic. $700 brand new.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2009 1:20 PM

this band is deft. not cool enough to be throwing around Beach Boys covers at their shows, especially a song as terrific as "girl don't tell me".

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2009 1:31 PM

"david bryne was there. "

not funny

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2009 1:37 PM

Wonder if anyone has the Delta Spirit setlist? Really sucks that they only played 35 minutes.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2009 2:06 PM

Oh my god that's me (lat picture, red shirt)

and rebecca (3rd picture, the short one lol)

Posted by Ray | May 22, 2009 2:19 PM

Oh man, is that really you, Ray? I thought I saw you and Rebecca there! How'd you enjoy the show? Tell Rebecca I said hello, too! We should meet up for drinks sometime, we just got our new apartment in Greenpoint so we'll invite you two over soon, man.

Posted by Tim | May 22, 2009 2:23 PM

what kind of roland is the keyboardist playing?

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2009 2:31 PM

seriously.

What the hell happened to this band?

I can't believe he kicked everyone out except for himself. Kinda makes me think of him as a pompous ass.

take that Mcdonalds money and run.

Why don't you just abandon your roots and move to Portland with every other hipster transplant

Oh wait...you already did that.

I've lost a lot of respect for James Mercer.

dry the rain.. awesome.

Posted by nsfw | May 22, 2009 4:02 PM

I recognize at least one dude that has always been in the band.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2009 4:19 PM

I thought Those to Come was really well performed...the harmonies were beautiful. This band is really versatile..soft and rockin, passionate, loving...not many bands can pull off something sounding like new slang and sea legs.

Posted by JM | May 22, 2009 4:26 PM

does no one remember how awful this band was live before? from videos of these shows it seems they have gotten much better. if it means dropping a few dead weights thats the breaks.

Thanks for posting the review from my blog man! The real credit should go to Double Hawk though, we write DANISH POET together. Here's her blog: http://doublehawkmusic.blogspot.com/

I got half of the Delta spirit dude's guitar (the body, not the neck; wasn't in any of the pictures...)
Dude definitely heard us, but didn't sign. douche.

He didn't kick evvvvveryone out. The other dude still plays guitar...

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2009 9:50 PM

Definitely would've liked to hear the Australia closer. Was it a venue curfew issue?

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2009 4:02 AM

strict curfew for 11:00pm

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2009 11:08 AM

Worst crowd EVER. And I go to a lot of shows. I'm talking about the first night. Every single person around me was talking from beginning to end. Not even paying attention to the band at all. Why were you there?

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2009 11:33 AM

It was a pretty bad crowd, but they got really into it when Sleeping Lessons came on.

Posted by IAN FRANCE | May 23, 2009 6:04 PM

It was a pretty bad crowd, but they got really into it when they started playing "Sleeping Lessons."

Posted by IAN FRANCE | May 23, 2009 6:05 PM

I've been going to shows in NY for over 2 decades now, and the crowds just keep getting worse and worse over time. I blame all of the midwestern transplants.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2009 6:49 PM

Delta Spirit was good in Philly; I didn't care for The Shins much, though. Some of the Wincing the Night Away material really dragged for me.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2009 8:01 PM

natasha ryan is a babe!

I saw the 5/17 Wellmont Theater show.

Delta Spirit sounds like every other Springsteen derivative band out there, I gave them a big MEH.

I thought The Shins were great, they looked like they were having a blast, referencing that they saw the movie "Anvil" earlier that day and took every chance they had to toss out a reference to the film.

The best part of the night was that they opened AND closed their encore w/ The Monks' "Oh, How to Do Now", not that anyone else in the crowd knew what they were playing.

Posted by Anonymous | May 25, 2009 5:10 PM

Does anybody know the Delta Flight's setlist for the second night (5/21/09)
