The Sounds @ Santos Party House in NYC - pics & setlist

photos by Chris La Putt

The Sounds

"In the downstairs of Santos Party House, a couple of skinny stylists are grooming new wave band, The Sounds. They are running late and we have about 3 minutes (which is sometimes as too normal for band shoots). There is no time for lights and adjustments, but luckily I've done this before and there are plenty of cool looking spaces to shoot a few on the fly. Then after, I settle in to listen to their interviews.

The Sounds are made up of five members, three of which are the songwriters and pictured below, are set to release their third album, Crossing The Rubicon this June.

Below is lead singer, Maja, and band mates Felix and Jesper, who are all songwriters and musicians."
[Robin Roemer shot some portraits of the band before the show]

(after the photo shoot...) The Sounds played an invite/contest/secret/private/whatever album-release show at Santos Party House in NYC last night (4/30). More pictures from it below...

after the photoshot? What is this Vogue magazine? Give me a break. Bunch of knownothings w/ fashionista aspirations. I already hate them and I've never even heard a lick of their music. They've been practicing those poses their entire lives.

butter face

Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2009 10:26 AM

hey manu chao was there!

oh wait...

Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2009 10:32 AM

well they sure are trying hard anyway

Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2009 10:49 AM

love that you can hate them and never have heard their music. pretty sure that makes you the poser.

10:51 and 10:23am, you both make solid points but 10:23 gets the edge because its true: They're just a bunch of fashionistas trying to be musicians. They're fairly generic at best, and a simple-minded pop band. Have fun No Doubt fans.

Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2009 10:59 AM

nah...they're alright. just a lil pop in em.

BULLSHIT

Posted by Jimi | May 1, 2009 11:18 AM

how was the crowd? was it a mess to get in? band room full when they played?

she is lovely even with the butter.

Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2009 11:26 AM

She's hot. You're not. They're fun. You're a bore.

Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2009 11:33 AM

this is exactly the kind of band No Doubt would think is cool...

Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2009 11:35 AM

What a hugely overrated band!

Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2009 11:45 AM

They Rocked it!!!

Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2009 11:49 AM

absolute garbage

Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2009 12:31 PM

robin roemer ftw!!!

Tony the Beat is a great song.

Or should I judge them based on what I think their aspirations are according to my interpretation of pictures from one of their shows?

The Sounds are a surprisingly good band that deserve a lot more recognition then they have yet to receive. A nice mix of rock and pop sensibility without being to cliche in my opinion.

it was horrible... bounced after 3 songs... maybe you like it if you are like 16? and watch mtv

I'm not trying to be a smartass, but do bands like this actually sell records? Would a indie store carry their new album?? does anyone actually walk in that store and buy a CD buy The Sounds???

Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2009 3:00 PM

"practicing those poses"? more like, they've been touring for years. They're a super solid pop band and they're not trying to hide from that fact. and why the hell should they?

Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2009 3:52 PM

and btw, awesome guitar. Greco or Ibanez perhaps?

Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2009 3:55 PM

i like the fifth photo from the bottom the best -- what a unique viewpoint. la putt, these are great shots.

to all the haters, i'm not ashamed of liking this band. they're fun, they're a great live act, they're pretty catchy, the keyboardist is hot as fvck --- i'd see them again in concert in a heartbeat

The Sounds are a great band to see live. I have enjoyed every one of their releases to date.

@ 3:52
The guitar is a Guild Brian May Model. Pretty rare as it was only made for a few years.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2009 2:40 PM

stylists for models = good

stylists for bands = bad

Posted by Lori | May 2, 2009 11:35 PM

bad would be a complement

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2009 12:38 AM

She sang along with a pre-recorded vocal backing track. 'nuff said.

Posted by Shite | May 3, 2009 11:59 PM

i know the band, she doesnt sing to a backing track, ever, nor ever has. this is just made up crap by unintelligent haters. and photoshoots? they are releasing an album, doing press on a press day in nyc. why is that so odd?

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2009 2:16 PM

Nylon holes may grab their attention at first, but relationshiops blossom from well kept undergarments.

Posted by Countess Luann De Lesseps | May 4, 2009 2:36 PM

wow, who the hell are you people? you are all judging the band based on some pictures? what a bunch of pretentious assholes. if you ever saw the band or listened to any of their records you might have a different opinion. oh but wait, that would be like, totally uncool. because they don't stare at their feet when they pay and write cliche (but at the same time TRYING not to be cliche) songs and proclaim themselves "vegan" because everyone else does. fucking pathetic followers.
