wavves in sumi and watercolor on bristol (danyellsaysyes)

"But things declined quickly from there, as between songs, Nathan began ineptly mocking the crowd ("Ooooooh, I'm on ecstasy!"), going off at length about his preference for California over Spain, and eventually telling them the festival was "one of the coolest things we've been part of in a while," dripping with sarcasm. Finally, fed up with Nathan's petulant behavior, Ryan ran out from behind his drumkit and poured a full cup of beer over Nathan's head. The act would be met with their most enthusiastic applause of the evening." [Pitchfork]WAVVES has US shows in NYC & Chicago coming up.

Ha! Good story, and nice of Pitchfork to post it when Wavves was playing on their curated stage.

There is not a more perfect band than Wavves for this to happen to.
Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2009 3:20 PM
Having Wavves headline a stage at a major festival is a huge error of judgment. Presumably Pitchfork's remit for this festival is to choose up-and-coming bands, but they've lost the ability to discern genuine talent from fly-by-night chancers.
Also, I have a feeling that Pitchfork is having financial difficulties. Look at the amount of recycled/old material on Pitchfork.tv, the slowdown in the amount of interviews on the site, and a lot of content aggregated from elsewhere. They're definitely going through a bad patch.

Indie scene needs more cowbell... and a perez hilton-like blog!
Imagine all the time one could spend amusing oneself with such things.
Because of this story, I noticed Pitchfork has a news tag called "Gossip", but this is rarely gossip. They were there and witnessed it first hand... and twittered about it. I read it last night.

I don't know. It's possible, but considering the money they make from ads and the fact that they don't have to actually print anything, I doubt it.
I'm glad Europe sees through this rich kid poser. Now if only American sheep hipsters would do the same.

Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2009 4:29 PM
i've seen him live/booked him and he is an absolute CHILD. whoever thought it was good idea to have him headline was out of their minds. how a show goes depends entirely on whether he had his kid's meal before the show or some other arbitrary thing. he's the least professional and just generally bratty musician out right now. and it's not even like he's an awful person,he's actually kind of shy/nice when he's not on performing, he's just not responsible or grateful enough to be touring as much as he does. this breakdown was inevitable.I feel sorry for ryan though, sweet kid.

".miss TV...miss VH1"
I miss the days when really the only comments on things you had to deal with were the close knit group of friends you hung with. Maybe the occasional random being as well. Still, it is hilarious to see how you all go into a frenzy when someones comment does not jibe with what you think. "Ooh wavves suck" "No they are great" Grizzly Bear stinks" "Grizzly Bear is awesome" "Pitchfork said this and rated this like this" Lord almighty isn't it enough for you to know you are right and the ones who disagree with you are just know nothings? Must you get all worked up about what some idiot stranger thinks?
The state of commentary today is in a sad shape.
That being said:
Wavves are fun
Grizzly Bear makes beautiful music
Pitchfork is worthless
Built to Spill at Maxwells will be anything but boring
Tortoise playing for free on Sunday in the beautiful Winter Garden is so much better then paying to see them at Bell House tomorrow
That Girl Talk show last night looked like a lame hipster douchebag fest
Meh
Time for Daft Punk?
Tom Yaps is gonna be there
TBA
Todd P sucks and throws parties at places that are fire hazards
Dan Deacon blows
Terminal 5 is a shithole
I think i covered everything for today and the usual mainstays

i feel kinda bad for calling him out at 4:30.it's true, not everyone is fit to be away from home for months at a time, and performing is really stressful rather than fun for some people. i feel like he's got a lot of people telling him what to do and what is best and what he should be grateful for (i even did it up there where i said he was ungrateful) when i guess you should be able to decide what's best for you. I like his music a lot, but maybe he should just say fuck you record label/promoter i'm taking a break.
people have meltdowns over less stressful things. poor wavves. he's talented, he should slow down and figure out what he wants before he burns out.

this is not the first meltdown, just the first meltdown at a huge festival. this was waiting to happen. dude's an ingrateful prick plain and simple. there are some people who can handle succes and some who can't. some who deserve and some who don't. it doesnt always show this quick but I guarantee there are more of these stories to come. this could be the end of wavves. maybe he uses it change his attitude and be a little more grateful for what he's got. how you deal with adversity (sound problems headlining sold out festival, playing to less people than you hoped for, crowd reaction not as anticipated) goes a long way towards showing what kind of person you are. sure everyone has bad days but this is starting to add up and when everyone has bad days, their bandmates dont pour beer on them. will wavves eat humble pie, issue a funny apology and move on with the tour or will he take his ball and go home to the people sucking his dick telling him fuck those european douches.
Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2009 6:22 PM
i'd say it's definitely the best thing to happen .. in no other forum would bands, label execs, competing bloggers, promoters, bookers, booking agents, journalists, fans, and general A-holes all be able to talk shit about each other in harmony. it's actually quite amazing and why i and so many of my peers / friends / coworkers keep coming back.
dont ever stop doing this dave! peace to brooklyn vegan forever!
wavves sucks forever. so does telepathe, but i'd do the cute one.
Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2009 6:22 PM
i definitely agree with 6:22. keep it going, BV. the people like tago mago who bitch about comments here are as much a trope as any of the other things he listed. people turn into fascists when bands they like (their friends?) get their just desserts and aren't given the blowjob they get from the traditional music press--pitchfork included.

you know there was a time in "indie" music where you really had to perfect your craft, and if you were lucky to build a small fan base it would take 5-10 years. People appreciated true talents like Robert Pollard who worked at his craft for 20 years before he ever got a chance to take a stage at a Euro festival. These days the "here today gone later today" hype is giving a platform for just total fucking no talents.

Wake up from your absurd fantasy land self important world there bands such as Wavves.
In the past bands in independent music if you wanna call it that were much more humble.
People playing in Jazz and blues bands from 30 40 years ago still playing dont get the b.s. attitude of these little kids. All this crap talking would most likely never occur face to face obviously at local shows.
*These days the "here today gone later today" hype is giving a platform for just total fucking no talents.

well you gotta give it up to his US and Euro booking agents - they are the ones that ACTUALLY made it happen for him.
Posted by a booking agent | May 29, 2009 8:06 PM
Sad. prolly just a cool guy that couldnt handle it. He made good noise pop, fun music. But was actually a talented musician, I thought. Im by no means a wavves lover, but am not one of the wavves bashers. I just think that before people pass judgement on this guys talent and character that they should
A) Go to this link and listen to these acoustic songs.
http://www.wvkr.org/2009/02/wavves-wvkr-set/
This shows what Nathan could(ve) be(en).
B) remember that everyone has meltdowns and its unfortunate. Sure Nathan was overhyped, im sure he'll even say that. But that wasnt his fault. unless you want to blame it on his association with the blogworthy Woodsist records, or his catchy/pop tunes. But obviously this guy couldnt handle what he was being put through, and i kinda think the songs from the link show that. To The Dregs acoustic is so eery.. and painful. at least thats what i make of it.
Seriously, listen to the linked songs before you pass judgement. they are completely different from his recorded and live stuff. if you don't, then you are ignorant to his abilities.
and remember, bashing on Wavves makes you no better then the 20 hour news cycle that followed Britney around. And Britney couldnt even make her own fucking songs, let alone sing. If you dont dig it, whatevs. If you dig it, thats cool. But if you're just gonna spew shit from your mouth about how much they "suxx" and talk like Carles to be 'relevant' and 'ironic', then you're an idiot.
and dont get me wrong, i enjoy HRO.
off the soapbox..

It says more about the lame booking agents who jump on anything that is hyped by sad 30-something uneducated music "writers" online because they see $$$$. Thinking an act that played a basement show in San Diego in March can and should be worthy of a two month European tour in May is pathetic...really that's the climate of music these days people. I thought it couldn't get any worse than Bright Eyes and Arcade Fire five years ago...it's only getting worse.

Hmm...seems like he WAS on ecstasy and probably wasted. I really doubt he suddenly had a random meltdown on his own, being as this leg of the tour just started. Some of you people are completely clueless retards. Just keep shooting your bullshit opinions here and pretend your opinions are funny/witty/accurate. Maybe it will be that the Crystal Antler Wavvves Bagoda are just made out of the same fake bakery of sound as Dolly Madison snack cakes that rot your insides, but last forever on the shelf like the Bay City Rollers in the hearts of the kids. Posted by imkoreansowhat | May 30, 2009 12:11 AM
To all the people who think that a lot of commentors are people in the music industry - booking agents, managers, label employees, etc - I seriously doubt this is true. The level of understanding as to how the industry works and which jobs are responsible for what is very shallow here, generally speaking. I'm sure that there are industry people who do post (like me), but for the most part, people chiming in about the music industry seem like armchair quarterbacks or alarmists and shit-stirrers.
Ruining music: no. Entertaining: yes. Annoying: usually. Wavves: this is a hilarious and sorta sad episode that I'm glad was shared. I've never hung out with the guy, probably never will, am in no position to call him an 'asshole.' This just seems like a frustrating night.

pitchfork's live tweets from the audience as this all went down were pretty fucking priceless, not gonna lie.
Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2009 1:01 AM
Record companies and blogs alike are so desperate to be the ones responsible for discovering The Next Big Thing(tm) that pretty much any group of hafwits can get hyped up these days, regardless of talent, ability, record sales, gigs played, etc. It's the "throwing crap at a wall and seeing what sticks" method of music creation.
Fuck...I wouldn't be surprised if whomever is running that TBA mock Myspace page starts getting offered gigs based solely on the two songs they have on their site and the amount of people talking about them in the comments here on BrooklynVegan. And frankly, their mock band probably has more talent and wherewithal then bands like WAVVES, because at least TBA seems to know how the system works.

Oh cry me a fucking river! God forbid people have an opinion on something they don't like. In an industry like music if you don't have the talent and the popularity to back it up you're gonna get called out for it. In fact, I wish the indie scene was more like the hip hop scene, where if your shit's weak then the people at the top of the food chain will call you out for it and singlehandedly end your career. People like 50 Cent and Eminem don't call it unfair, they call it Natural Selection. If you can't take the heat get the fuck out the kitchen!!

I don't understand how Wavves is so huge? Ok, the debate is in reality not many people know them, but in the online music community blog type thingy they definitely are. I don't know why Pitchfork nominated them in the best of list. I was hoping on liking it because of what Pitchfork says and what the band sounds like. To me the sound is either you love them or you hate them. Personally Wavves sounds like shit meld together. The music is too distorted and his voice is fucking annoying. I'm glad he had a meltdown, it shows he's a spoiled brat and an asshole too. Good, goodbye for your career kid.
"Yea, let's have a kid who puts shit together on a computer a headliner for our festival" - Pitchfork.

^^^
that was me earlier... not to sound harsh or anything, the kid just does what he does. His music may not be my cup of tea and a lot others and I understand his music was meant to be made as a bedroom project.
But still I remain, he acted like a spoiled brat and I don't understand what's so great about this band.

^^^ Bahleeted, but Google Cache to the rescue:
"I think in the back of my head I knew I wasn't exactly mentally healthy enough to continue to tour the way I have been since February. Honest truth is this has all happened so fast and I feel like the weight of it has been building for months now with what seems like a never ending touring and press schedule which includes absolutely zero time to myself. I'm sorry to everyone who has put effort into this and to everyone who supported me. Mixing ecstasy valium and xanax before having to play in front of thousands of people was one of the more poor decisions I've made(duh) and I realize my drinking has been a problem now for a good period of time. Nothing else I can do but apologize to everyone that has been affected by my poor decision making. I made a mistake. Not the first mistake I've made and it for sure wont be the last. I'm human. Don't know why I chose the biggest platform I could imagine to lose my shit, but that's life. You live and you learn."

Get stoned make shitty records see how far it takes you
punk rock
I like this kids music, i met him once and he was nice, obviously not a power duo as far as a live act but other than that does it matter? if everything fell in your lap at once you'd probably do a lot of drugs, have a drinking problem and meltdown as well.
pitchfork is not the devil also
jesus christ it's there for people like you who are obsessed with music
you people might as well be just as ungrateful as you say this nathan kid is
shut up already

Hey decoloresfilm, go spam your fucking amateur movies that you probably make with a lame Apple product and edit in iMovie on some community who actually gives a shit. It would be pretty lame of you to bring attention to yourself by riding off the coattails of musicians with actual talent, but nowhere near as lame as trying to ride off the coattails of a band as shitty as Wavves. Beat it!

Anonymous posting is the best thing about this site. Thank fucking god that at least one aspect of the "indie" music industry RESEMBLES a democracy. If the listening public has to continue to get bludgeoned with the nihilistic crap rap of the ruling class, at the very least, they should be allowed to publicly complain about it. The saddest thing about the seemingly non-stop flurry of overhyped rich kids from the suburbs in music these days is the fact that there are so fucking many brilliant artists out there who get pushed aside in favor of these douchebags.
You know, it's just not fair, and not right, and I'm elated that the internet provides a place for the rest of us to point this out.
P.S., about "kids knowing their shit". Any 20 year old can grow and encyclopedic knowledge of any subgenre of music now, thanks to the internet. Knowing a lot about music and pop culture in general is no longer any sort of accomplishment in and of itself, in this age.

2:27
when wasn't american indie rock about rich kids from the suburbs?
Posted by Anonymous | June 5, 2009 3:05 AM
2:27- there is SOME truth in that. But actually, I think it used to be a little more middle-class.
Posted by kllyo | June 5, 2009 2:41 PM
2:41 - you can count the exceptions on your two hands.
Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2009 2:31 PM
bullshit.
most indie rockers grew up middle class, not rich. Nathan Williams didn't grow up rich.
Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2009 3:00 PM
get off of your fucking high horse 6/5 2:27.
talent is in the eye of the beholder, you self-victimizing whiner.
Wavves has got talent *and* was overexposed. Yes, you can have both, and too much of the second can destroy the 1st.
But don't come crying me a fucking river about how this kid isn't good and your own music is unappreciated. He is fucking good. There are several excellent songs on both of Wavves' records, and your own music is most likely not "appreciated" enough because you suck and have a shitty, finger-pointing attitude.

Need a Kleenex to wipe those crocodile tears away? You big baby you.

I didn't say I was a musician. I'm content with my lot in life. This is not coming from a place of personal bitterness. I'm bitter for everyone else.
Does he have talent? Maybe. So he's written some excellent songs. So what? Look, I think the Wavves album is, production-wise, very nice. It's not terrible. But it's merely a triumph of aesthetics, not songwriting, which is always what separates "now" music from music people will still be listening to in 20 years.
I just wish people would try harder instead of just having things handed to them and acting like lazy, entitled ingrates. But more and more, it seems that's what this generation (of middle to upper class white people) is all about. I don't know why people keep on defending the utter lack of meritocracy in the world. It's pathological behavior. There is no defending the situation.
Also, do you guys know what "crocodile tears" means?
Also, I just remembered how very subjective all of this is.
Posted by lokkls | June 6, 2009 4:16 PM
"production-wise, very nice"? it's intentionally lowfi. that's the first thing anyone would notice if they listened to it.
wheich leads me to believe that...
you've never even heard this guy's music.
why write long outraged paragraphs about bullshit if you're never heard the music you're talking about?

I prefer lofi production. You're assuming too much about me. I like the way the record sounds. Although it sounds like it was recorded on garageband or logic using a lot of tracks put through the guitar amp plugin. Which is a cool sound.
Still, I don't think the songs are that great.
Please try harder.
