Peanut Butter cup guy

Nearly 35 pounds of Psilocybin (hallucinogenic) mushrooms baked into about 500 chocolate peanut butter cups were intercepted by Murfreesboro Police vice detectives before being sold at Bonnaroo music festival beginning Thursday in Manchester.

Vice detectives Wednesday raided the Kingwood Drive home of suspect Charles Culver, 22, and located the illegal drug with a street value of $10,000, said police spokesman Kyle Evans.

"We have seen an increase in LSD over the past several years and this is another form or substitute for that drug," Evans said.

"The affects are hallucinogenic in nature, similar to LSD. They are very dangerous and there have been incidents of people dying the first time they used this drug."

Origin of the mushrooms is not being disclosed.

"There's no telling how many lives these detectives have saved by keeping these drugs off the street and they should be commended for an outstanding investigation leading to these arrests," Evans said. [The Murfreesboro Post]

There really is no telling.

The amount lives they saved is infinitely inverse to the amount of lives they made much more duller.

What absolute crap. Nobody has ever died from shrooms.

Are newspapers really so broke that a reporter can't even do a little fact-checking instead of just taking some hick's word for it?

Total misinformation. You can't die from eating Psilocybin mushrooms.

Philocybe mushrooms are not poisonous in the sense that they can kill and no lethal dose is known. However, some people react to them with vomiting, nausea and stomach pains. No serious long-term physical damage to health has been reported although it must be noted that no research has been carried out to assess the effects of frequent use.

The main risk to health from eating philocybe mushrooms comes from mistaken identity - collecting and eating poisonous varieties of mushrooms instead of the ones possessing the desired hallucinogenic properties. Some of these other fungi can cause death or permanent liver damage within hours of ingestion. Distinguishing hallucinogenic mushrooms from poisonous ones can be very difficult and sometimes almost impossible.

Risks to physical safety are likely to result from an individual’s behaviour while under the influence of psilocybin. This may include irresponsible behaviour, which could lead to an accident or injury.

(35 lbs x 16 oz/lb)/500 peanut butter cups = 1.12 oz per cup. If they're dry mushrooms, that's rather worth $20 per, I'd say.

It is one of the most passive drugs on the planet.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2009 10:23 PM

it's true that people have died from taking mushrooms for the first time, but it's purely a matter of being allergic (like you can die from peanut if you're allergic). so if you don't die the first time, you're good, and if you want to test to see if you're one of those rare few who are allergic, just take a tiny bit and see if you get violently ill.

Propaganda, the displaying of information, weather true or not, in order to influence an audience to behave a certain way, or instill certain beliefs. With that said this is the worst case of police propaganda i have seen in a long time. there should be a law against lying to the american people, especially on a scale like this cause now you have countless numbers of people freakin out that there might be a deadly batch of magic shrooms around them. I encourage the editor of this to "Go to fuckin school, and earn an education so that you can think for yourself instead of eating all the horshit the popo's throw at you!" I hope the author is as offended with my post as i was with his/her article.

HEY DAVID, READ ANY BOOK OR ENCYCLOPEDIA ENTRY ON LSD AND REALIZE THAT Timothy Leary synthesized psilocybin to create his "problem child" LSD and Harvard kicked his quack ass out of their institution by his utter reckless behavior and "teaching skills" (while on LSD, you lose full control of any and all of the powerful mind by taking a smidgeon, or about half a freakin' milligram of LSD) If you had any fiber of sense or realization in your mind you would realize that these drugs ARE killing people, mentally, physically and spiritually. THIS IS WHY THEY ARE ILLEGAL IN THE UNITED STATES, BECAUSE WE ARE SMART ENOUGH TO KNOW BETTER.

and yeah, that cop had sense when he said it is another substitute or form of the drug.

and yeah, they also had sense to bust his ass for trying to infiltrate bonnaroo, an awesome MUSIC festival where people come together to try and have a good time by listening to music and meeting some cool people and enjoying the nature of Manchester, TN.

Drugs are but limitations in the mind, and they cut off you from you, and man, you only have you. And if you hate yourself, don't try to rain on anyone else's parade, because WE DON'T WANT YOUR DRUGS.

and whoever said this:
"they didn't save any lives, but they saved countless people from ruining their festival experience wandering around lost in their own paranoia"

I agree, but partially. Because it is a fact people die/go nutso and kill people from shrooms. ITS A SUBJECTIVE THING, THEY DON'T DOCUMENT DEATHS ON FREAKIN' WIKIPEDIA, YOU MORONS WHO THINK OTHERWISE!!!!

Posted by smartcookie | June 15, 2009 11:39 AM

@ smartcookie:

Psilocybin, the active compound in magic mushrooms, doesn't need to be synthesized... it occurs naturally in certain fungi. Albert Hoffman, not Tim Leary, was the first to synthesize (accidentally) LSD. There are many reasons why both of these hallucinogenics have been outlawed in the United States, but them killing people is not one of these reasons... There has never been a single recorded incident of either drug causing a fatal overdose (in fact, experts agree that it's practically impossible). Although people react differently to these drugs (and, of course, sometimes negatively, and yes, people have done very stupid, sometimes fatal things while under the influence), the overall consensus among people who have tried them and people who research them is that they have a great deal of potential for treating a wide variety of ailments. As has been pointed out above, alcohol (and tobacco) are much more harmful and much easier to abuse. How much violence is perpetrated while under the influence of alcohol? The reason they're not illegal is because they have powerful lobbies and lots of cash. Hallucinogens are associated with "alternative" culture (possibly threatening to the government, especially during the height of their popularity) and there are a myriad of other reasons why they've been outlawed.
Hallucinogens aren't for everyone. If you don't want to use drugs, more power to you. However, reciting misinformation with a tone of condensation makes you sound like a fool. If you're going to spew, get your facts straight.

Posted by unknown | June 15, 2009 12:29 PM

I don't need MEHshrooms, I'm my own psychoactive substance.

That being said you must have self control or know your limits. If you take some and jump in the river then yoyu should blame yourself not the drug you were taking. Plenty of dudes died after going swimming drunk, you don't see people outlawing beer or some crazy shit like that. let people do what they want.

" If you don't want to use drugs, more power to you. However, reciting misinformation with a tone of condensation makes you sound like a fool. If you're going to spew, get your facts straight."

true. I didn't check my facts, although I knew the facts in hindsight from reading a lot about LSD (its easy to forget or confuse Albert Hoffman and Timothy Leary and the technicalities of the entire experimentation, my apologies). Frankly I was just fed up with all the positivity towards this stuff that has fucked up many of my friends and I got really lucky that I came to the realizations that I did while under the influence of LSD. I had the whole God nirvana whatever realization and the boddhistva meeting and yeah. It was a mind opening experience to say the least, but I'd never do it again. I'm fine with reality, frankly.

Also, I wasn't meaning to be condescending and I'm sorry if anyone misinterpreted my good intentions.

Peace&love, yo.

"They are very dangerous and there have been incidents of people dying the first time they used this drug." I guess I can't add any more to the complete and utter insanity of this unfact. I mean, people jump into canals sober and die, too. WTF. I can't believe a newspaper would even print something like that in 2009.

And as for slagging off the guy for charging $20 each, yeah it's expensive, but is it really any worse than paying $10 for a single beer or whatever at a festival? Relatively speaking, it kind of fits. Too bad he couldn't get busted after selling at least a few. He probably needs that money for a lawyer now. Sad, but true.

Posted by It's worth $20 if they're good. | September 12, 2009 3:15 PM

the only way people can die from taking acid or mushrooms is if they do something stupid. just taking it alone will not kill you. same goes with pot but people seem to think you can o.d. on that stuff too.
