DC comics and chocolate milkshakeFriday, June 5th, marked the end of Art Brut week here in NYC. The UK band played the tiny Mercury Lounge on Monday, Tuesday (6/2), Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Friday's lineup was my favorite. Openers were Keith TOTP and Jeffrey Lewis who reads from comic books that he draws about his songs as he plays. Speaking of comic books, Art Brut also paid a visit to DC Comics headquarters while they were in town. More pictures and the setlist from the Friday show, below...

Jeffrey Lewis

The story of how Jeffrey Lewis found a red hand and was picked-up by a busload of nuns who thought it was the hand of the devil that needed to be killed but ended up to be the hand of a 11-handed monster that killed people. The monster killed all the nuns and spared Jeffrey Lewis' life in exchange for Jeffrey to be his right hand.

I bought the 5 day pass as it was limited and only $50. I didn't plan on going to every show originally but they just kept being way too enjoyable not to go.
Going in I merely liked Art Brut. I ended up leaving the week a fan. Haters missed out on some self-deprecating humor, great brit punk rock, and whole hell of a lot of fun.

"Enough is enough."
Don't worry, we won't be covering nights 6, 7 or 8.

This was a pretty amazing run with each night being different enough to keep things interesting (as if that was going to be problem anyway). You don't need much of an excuse to showcase one of the best lives bands out there. Thanks for the photos BV! Also, it was supposedly history in the making for Mercury with 5 sold out shows in a row for one band.

Mondays performance was sooo poor compared to other times i've seen them in Bowery. Disappointing really. They were like really great openers.
