"Woah just watched crystal castles at sonar, sound was awful throughout kept cutting out so at te end alice started trashing the stage..." - Little Boots

Crystal Castles @ Coachella 2009 (more by Darren Kim)
Crystal Castles

"Toronto synth-rockers Crystal Castles were involved in a melee with security while onstage in Barcelona early Sunday morning. Their show, part of the Sonar festival, had been marred by technical issues. At some point during the set singer Alice Glass went into the crowd and punched a security guard. She then climbed back on stage, and pulled out the kick drum and appeared to be about to heave it when a sound technician grabbed her. And that's when her bandmate Ethan Kath jumped in and rushed to her aid." [National Post]
Videos below...

and here it is from another point of view:

same show. You can hear people booing....

"alice glass try to sing as loud as she can but no one can dance... [shame on you:: sonar's sound technician!] " - says the person who posted this video

it's kind of sad/humorous that i only know of crystal castles because of all the shit they bring upon themselves.
never even heard one of their songs

yea crystal castlessss

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:03 PM

wow they suck

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:04 PM

That's just sad. Alice Glass looks pathetic - half-heartedly fighting and making a scene. Looks like she's throwing a tantrum, wants attention - and the sound technician & security look more tired of her than anything.

And then, when it might turn into something more, video ends...

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:06 PM

canadians trying to be tough. hilarious!

it would be adorable if there was anything enjoyable about them. as it is, it's just dumb pathetic bullshit.

the saddest part is that they think they're widely loved superstars. maybe it will start to get interesting as they start acting crazier and crazier?

probably not.

"Crystal Castles @ Lollapalooza 2009" ?

That shit hasn't even happened yet. Future photos!

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:07 PM

Good thing there were a million cameras in the front row, this is gonna help their street cred. Don't fuck with this band cause they're dangerous.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:13 PM

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:13 PM

If I didn't know any better, I'd think this group is a bunch of total and utter doucebags.

Posted by Travis | June 22, 2009 4:13 PM

So . . . she was angry at security because her band sounded like shit?

That doesn't make any sense Alice.
You've only yourself to blame.
I thik you need a time out.
15 minutes in the chair.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:16 PM

sex, drugs and synth-rock!

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:16 PM

The first two videos seemingly end at the same moment, right after the sound technician takes Glass off the drum riser, and Ethan Kath runs over - did the place just kill the lights at that point, until Glass had a 'time-out'?

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:16 PM

First WAVVES at Primavera, now this - what's with Barcelona festivals and singers in duos having melt-downs?

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:18 PM

canadian bands are always terrible, and they any attention they get really goes to their head.

napoleon complex, I guess.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:22 PM

Stupid bands.

There can't be many things worse than being a "Toronto synth-rocker."

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:24 PM

the saddest thing about these guys is that their loser fans actually have deluded themselves into believing the lead singer is "hot"

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:26 PM

But I like AC Newman

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:29 PM

>>canada. cranking out the most mediocre talents with the biggest egos.

so fucking true...I loved reading the page-turner that is the Broken Social Scene book, any band with 2 records really does need a fucking book written about them--of course the author is a total sycophant so that only adds to the sad reality of what bands from Toronto are made of.

and to the actress playing the role of "Alice Glass" please reveal yourself, as the bad performance art is getting sadder and sadder

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:34 PM

I think Crystal Assholes and Wavves should do a tour together. Maybe both "bands" will kill each other and do all of us a favor by not making anymore "music."

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 4:34 PM

Wow. You Brooklyn kids are so cool. Having fun bashing Canadian talent, are we?

True, Crystal Castles are a bunch of douchebags. Everytime I seem to catch them, they end their set early - seemingly due to sound problems. Maybe they just can't cut it live. And Alice, that whole angsty lying on the floor bit is just lazy and tired. Crystal Castles would be better off without her.

Anyways, back to Canada. Not sure how the Brooklyn bunch can comment on Canadian bands having huge egos - aren't you lot known for being full of enough ego to make all of Hollywood jealous?

Toronto has some great acts, most of which are 100% ego free. Same goes for the rest of the country.

As for the Napoleon complex... um... Canada is one of the biggest countries in the world, and even though I know you were not referencing it's size (which is what Napoleon complexes are all about actually), any finger pointing towards Canada being jealous or trying to make up for something is clearly a misunderstanding on your part. If anything, we pride ourselves on NOT being the U.S.

But we'll still sell you our oil, bitches.

Cheers,

Proud Canadian

yeah well I still can't get enough of Sum 41

Posted by ROCK STARchitect | June 22, 2009 4:38 PM

Crystal Castles just turns on the strobe light and acts really "important"

It's not bands from Canada, it's bands with Crystal in their names. Think about it...Crystal Stilts, Crystal Antlers, Crystal Castles...all completely horrible.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:03 PM

"quit thy childhood, my friend, and wake up"

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:05 PM

crystal stilts are a great band and quite polite.

crstal antlers are decent.

crystal castles have nothing redeeming about them.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:11 PM

go alice!! yay!

Posted by Lori | June 22, 2009 5:12 PM

why are you all so angry at her? she had a ligitimate concern about the quality of sound. is a performer wants to make the show better for the paying public whats so bed about it?? get off her!!! crystal castles 4eva!

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:12 PM

I always express my legitimate concerns by punching staff people and throwing drums

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:14 PM

Denigrating an entire nation based on the actions of a few is hardly an advantageous endeavor for Americans, non? ;)

Posted by jen | June 22, 2009 5:14 PM

5:03. what a perfectly asinine thing to say. these bands have nothing in common at all

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:14 PM

my guess is a security guard was fucking with a fan and alice got pissed. siouxsie used to smack the guards in the head with her mic stand, alice needs to step it up :)

Posted by Lori | June 22, 2009 5:17 PM

Canadian "art" and the Canadian "scene" are equally embarrassing.

the problem is institutional. too much ham fisted boosterism pushing subpar work.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:17 PM

i'm really glad so many other people think this band is crap. makes me feel better about the world we live in.

Posted by jack | June 22, 2009 5:18 PM

wow, it took until 5pm for the Crystal Castles PR team to notice this hate thread was happening.

fyi guys, it doesn't look like the work of legit fans when you post all your "support" posts in one span of 20 minutes.

aren't Crystal Castles making enough money to hire a more attentive publicity operation?

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:20 PM

Back in the 90's it was the norm to trash a drum set during your set. Now you get molested by a sound guy. Awesome.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:21 PM

Having a public meltdown during a festival show in Barcelona is sooooooooo two weeks ago. Canadians following trends set by Americans, once again...*yawn*

Posted by perfectly asinine | June 22, 2009 5:21 PM

the security guard wasn't fucking with a fan. the lead singer is just a retarded prima donna.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:22 PM

As much as I think this band is ridiculous and not worthy of all this attention, that security staff was out of line. That was most likely a drum set owned by the facility (which is pretty normal at these type of events) and the dude probably thought he was protecting house property. In this situation he's just gotta let her have her tantrum, and then let the event organizers present the band with a bill for whatever they've broken.

But, whatever. This band blows. I hate that this will somehow raise their profile.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:25 PM

4:37, ha ha ha, Canada can pretend it resents the US all it wants.

In reality, your best and brightest all get the hell out of there and into our country as quickly as you can.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:25 PM

Canada has the population of an average midsized US state.

for it's size, Canada has a perfectly respectable, even envious, artistic output.

It would be great if Canada were pleased with that, and kept its cultural and artistic goals realistic.

Instead the powers that be and Canadian internal media blow all of the success stories out of proportion and you end up with a country that honestly, truly believes that Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene and Crystal Castles are among "the most important bands in the world," and, more pointedly to the national psyche, "as good as anything coming out of the States."

Worse so, the band members themselves buy into it. They really believe they are superstars.

Hence, this embarrassing little spectacle chronicled here.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:33 PM

Bratz.

5:33, Technically, that dude in Arcade Fire is an American, so Canada loses rights to them.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:36 PM

This has nothing to do with where they are from and everything to do with the fact that they suck.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:37 PM

More proof why those of us who reside outside the States view Americans as some of the dumber shits (over)-poplulating our planet.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:38 PM

i really like their music but they seriously need to chill.out. they act like they own the place where ever they go that's why they keep getting into problems with club people/sound people. they don't look punk, they just look like assholes.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:42 PM

Canada's national treasures are:

Broken Social Scene- a lame Dino Jr. soundalike tribute to early 90's "indie rock" featuring 10 men in their late 30's early 40's. And sometimes if we're "lucky" includes Feist --who recorded a song (did not write) that is a rip-off of the "Thumb War" song.

Arcade Fire-a lame John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band soundalike act--who can really bring the "spiritual" aspect to their work (barf)

Crystal Castles-no words

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:46 PM

5:38 is proof that the rich Western world outside the US is so used to blindly hating the USA that they can't handle, or even imagine, criticism of themselves.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:47 PM

@ 5:33 - so basically what you're saying is Americans have cornered the market on asshole behaviour. If an American band had done this it would have been OK because they have achieved an impressive "artistic output", and this allows them to behave like assholes. In essence, we're encroaching on your territory.

You know, I'd initially started out objecting to your point, but now I see you actually make sense.

Posted by jen | June 22, 2009 5:47 PM

Yeah isn't Win from Texas? Sorry 5:33, no go on that one.

Posted by ROCK STARchitect | June 22, 2009 5:48 PM

when has an American band of this kind of limited stature done this? give me one example.

American indie bands have a sense of how petty theri own indie fame is, they know they aren't famous in any real way.

Canadian (and British, and Australian) flavors of the month could use a dose of that humility.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:50 PM

P.S. I think Alice Glass acted like an idiot, and I don't think much of this band. But the fact that Americans are grabbing onto this as an anti-Canadian thing with such fervor is a little bit pathetic. Glass houses and all that cliche bullshit ;)

Posted by jen | June 22, 2009 5:52 PM

Canadians clearly can't handle a little criticism.

All our lives, we down here in the States have endured hearing how fucked up you think we all are, meanwhile you replicate our culture (poorly) and benefit economically from that same aggressive US foreign policy that you knee-jerk criticize and don't have to pay for.

Whatever, I don't support the foreign policy either, but at least I'm mature enough to be able to handle a little criticism of the nation I call home.

Buck up Canada!

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 5:58 PM

C'mon losers, Canada LOVES Arcade Fire. He's like a national hero up there. Nice try trying to disown him after you guys have canonized him as the next Celine Dion.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 6:03 PM

btw, only a Canadian would know that the Arcade Fire guy is from Texas.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 6:10 PM

Wow, I'm heading to NY this summer from Vancouver to see some shows, take in the city, enjoy its culture.

Posted by Kung Fu Kid | June 22, 2009 7:24 PM

there is no reason to hate canada. please.

crystal castles, awful. we're near unanimous on that. that's good. associating a country's music scene with 3 bands you don't like?

and BTW, broken social scene and arcade fire are great bands though! what the hell. dinosaur jr sound-alikes? because j mascis played with them that one time and kevin drew can sound vaguely like j mascis in certain songs? and arcade fire is great! who can deny 'funeral'. so wonderful. and they would never throw a temper tantrum. so much hate.

yeah, while we're on the subject of canada, FUCK leonard cohen! what a hack!

you're all idiots.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 7:29 PM

this feels really staged, notice how both videos end at EXACTLY the same time?

Posted by taylor | June 22, 2009 7:30 PM

lol why would they stage that? this should be considered a meltdown a la wavves. although not in the sense that the band members hate eachother, just that drugs were probably involved and both bands need to, as jared swiley put it, "move back into their parents house and think things over."

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 7:45 PM

coke and k will do that

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 8:26 PM

Crystal Castles is NOT from Canada. They're from New Jersey . . . Ho-Ho-Kus I think. Anyway, Ethan and Alice had some shitty Alanis Morissette cover act going on over there, they didn't even have a name that I can remember, they'd just hop on their stools, Ethan with his acoustic guitar and Alice with her tambourine, announce "We're Ethan and Alice." and then launch into a set of Alanis covers. They were pretty painful. Next thing I knew they're claiming to be from Canada and playing synth pop punk or whatnot. I guess they thought claiming to be from Canada made them cooler while still paying homage to Alanis. I guess they didn't count on the fact that so many people from the States seem to hate Canada.

Ever get the feeling that you've been cheated?

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 8:43 PM

I hate Alice (in drugs wonderland)

yes, they suck and are robbers, stupid, and i like 4 traks from them (most remixes than original tracks) and yes, she gets all the music worst with her "singing".

Not the only band in Canada.

There are much talent there! and yes! Also in te U.S.A.

enjoy life :)

Posted by ignat | June 22, 2009 9:12 PM

there is a good band in canada with a front woman who is a way better performer than alice glass. this woman is also insane but it works to her benefit. that band is called Duchess Says. look it up.

no dipshit, these comments are regarding current acts from Canada--well three that get massive fawning in the current "indie" landscape in their homeland, get huge egos-- when truth be told, they are mediocre at best

so CURRENT acts you say?

-wolf parade, sunset rubdown, handsome furs. all awesome.
-plants and animals
-miracle fortress
-rock plaza central

hell, even tokyo police club had a handful of great songs. i can't even believe i need to make the argument that good music can come out of a COUNTRY. DUH. of fucking course canada produces worthwhile musicians.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2009 10:48 PM

as an american i feel the need to defend canada in this. there are probably more great bands per capita in canada than the us. canada has a band that is better than any band in the us (silver mt zion) as well as other great bands (arcade fire, islands, wolf parade, broken social scene).

dont get crystal castles though. saw them at bonnaroo. sorta just noise with that girl shouting on top of it. not my cup of tea.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 2:11 AM

Who cares where someone is from? Shouldn't we just care about the quality of the perfomance. They suck because they are not professional and cannot cut it as a live act.

All this xenophobic back and forth is really, really dumb.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 2:24 AM

How and more importantly why did this thread become an outlet for people to show their disapproval of Canada and Canadian artists?

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 4:12 AM

We saved your sorry "arses" in WWII, you ungrateful Canucks.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 4:33 AM

it's so typical that the legit criticism of the Canadian music industry gets received as "hating Canada."

you cowards, why don't you take the criticism seriously for what it is? The USA ain't great but at least we can absorb what other people have to say about us... the fact is true, Canada has been pushing a lot of untalented people's music lately.

Do you pretend that isn't true? This band is god fucking awful.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 4:33 AM

The world is too big and diverse to generalize.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 4:55 AM

interesting how it is endlessly ok to criticize the USA, but even the mildest criticism of Canada elicits disapproving sighs and whines about "xenophobia."

yes Canada, you're so oppressed! get real.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 4:59 AM

I'll present my comments in person. This band Crystal blah blah is full of themselves like so many Brooklyn 20 something bands. Come on! The rest of the country knows Brooklyn bands are going on location cred, and attitude.

Celene Dion and shania twain are both from Canada and they're pretty good.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 5:25 AM

ahhhh deviant behavior....

but that does not meant that all Canadians are like that!!!

so there are bands such as Arcade Fire, Hot Hot Heat, Tegan and Sara, my friends Tokyo Police Club, Malajube, the Dears and many more that are not at all known for anything like this.

Apparently Alice is very nice as I have been told by a member of HEALTH, "Crimewave" - Crystal Castles vs Health, is a real good track.

well dunno, this ain't a reason to make Canadians look bad in genera.

I think that the Canada quips started off as a joke and then so asshole took it too far and shit hit the fan.

Personally I love Canada and would fuck it if it has a pussy.

you guys are dense. what was said about Canada and it's indie pop stars happens to be true

Posted by Sacred Absolute Hipster Cow | June 23, 2009 11:43 AM

so much anger towards canada. seems fishy. god knows, with all that news and entertainment trickling down from canada and infiltrating the U.S. media, americans have every right to be angry.

to all those making pointless, erroneous and gosh darn braindead stupid comments about canada on here - dont get too upset, you'll be bound to pop a blood vessel and then you'll have to dish out god knows how much cash for the hospital stay. then you might need to pawn off that shiny mac of yours in order to foot the bill. if you can't post shitty shit-disturbing blog comments all day, what ever will you do?

off to smoke some fine pot, get a free physical and marry another dude. latah hatahs.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 12:31 PM

The Canada hate really should stop, but on the same tip, Canadians should learn to brush off the criticism. Americans are subject to shitty attitudes and prejudice the world round and not only have we learned to deal with suffering the insults, but we are further berated if we dare to individually defend ourselves. The more well informed, logical and intelligent our defense, the more we are hated for confounding the haters pre-conceived bigotry.

Having said that, 90% of the Anti-Canada comments on here are NOT well informed, logical or intelligent, so I don't blame the Canadians for their overly defensive attitudes. Still, for someone to claim that they pride themselves on NOT being someone else is a pretty narrow minded and pathetic way of thinking. Merely not being an American does not validate your worth.

Sorry, that was boring.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 1:11 PM

for the last time you foolish people...

the point made was not "Canada sucks," but that "the Canadian indie music industry sucks."

And it does! Go attend the Juno awards if you have any doubt. It's too commercial, too glossy, and too soft mush crappy.

please go back and actually read the thread before you post another ridiculous "stop the hate" rant

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 1:29 PM

Saw Crystal Castles at Bonnaroo. Set started at least 30 min late b/c of technical problems. Is it coincidence they had tech problems here a couple weeks later? I doubt it.

White Rabbits started on time with 2 drum kits and 5 or 6 people onstage, so it's funny CC can't get the sound right on their drum kit, 808 and vocals.

Posted by Anonymal | June 23, 2009 1:46 PM

"the point made was not "Canada sucks," but that "the Canadian indie music industry sucks."

And it does! Go attend the Juno awards if you have any doubt. It's too commercial, too glossy, and too soft mush crappy."

The Junos have nothing to do with "indie" music, any more than the Grammys do.

And yes, sometimes bad bands are pushed by the media here solely because they're Canadian. But this happened in Spain, didn't it? I guess someone likes them for their music, unless there are hundreds of CBC listeners living in Barcelona...

Posted by Michael Newton | June 23, 2009 2:14 PM

not the Junos, sorry, meant to say the Polaris awards

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 2:20 PM

it's immaterial that this happened in Spain, the argument is that these Canadian indie popstars are blown out of proportion at home, and they naively buy into themselves.

it's not that they didn't write a couple of good songs that made them internationally indie popular, it's that the indie scene in your country is such an obnoxious little sandbox that these one hit wonder types get catapulted to having embarrassing superstar egos.

Commenting in an utterly pointless comment thread about one country vs another country!

Posted by Akolade | June 23, 2009 3:21 PM

but that's not was this thread was about at all, 3:21.

the thread was actually an intelligent comment on the effect of indie fame on Canadian artists, and why it affects them the way it does.

why is it off limits to say anything critical of institutions in Canada?

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 3:32 PM

I'm just loving this.

Americans getting all frothy over Canada. It pleases me no end that so many of you are just so pissed about Canada and everything we are (and aren't). I seriously get a boner thinking about all you "real" music aficionados railing at your computer screen, spittle flying and eyes bulging.

Of course Canadians have to shout 30 times louder to be heard over their neighbour to the south. And the notion that Canada supporting and promoting it's own is somehow wrong and American support of their own is rightous is the kind of thinking that really does leave America on the outside looking in at the rest of the western world.

Ah well this is all moot really. When the Chinese enslave your bankrupt country, and Canada falls the next day we'll all be listening to All Mao All The Time radio anyway.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 3:39 PM

I never realized that Canadians are so hair trigger sensitive about criticism.

The USA gets criticized, often unfairly, every minute of every day everywhere. We've learned to deal with it, you guys obviously could stand to be a more thick skinned.

What was said about Canada was pretty tame, just that the indie scene up there is really commercial and pop "artists" who don't deserve the adoration get treated like geniuses.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 3:54 PM

What "institutions"? So far all I've read are comments about the "Canadian indie music industry". There is no such thing. There are indie labels in Canada. (I know because I run one.) For the most part they operate completely independently of one another, hence the term "indie". They are not part of some sort of monolithic industry whose job it is to push mediocre talent before U.S. audiences.

Here are the facts. The reason you have heard of "shitty" Canadian bands like all the ones named above is because they get played on college radio and get invited to play festivals in your country. So presumably someone there likes them. I'm not sure how that translates to "Canada" as a whole pumping up mediocre talent.

And if the topic is much-hyped bands that don't deserve the hype, allow me to throw in a few examples untainted by any association with the Great White North: the Hold Steady, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Telepathe, Dirty Projectors, Vampire Weekend...

Posted by Johnny Canuck | June 23, 2009 3:56 PM

We probably do need to get more thick skinned in canada. Too bad we had to learn this over defending such a horrible band.

Farts

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 4:00 PM

So if someone is an egotistical mediocre asshole musician from Canada, then the entire Canadian music industry is filled with mediocre, asinine, egoist? Wow. No child left behind, huh?

Seriously, grow up, some people act stupidly that's no reason to dismiss an entire country.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 4:02 PM

Next week, some blogger will declare that Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective suck and that Canadian music is cool again...then most of you hipsters will regret the above comments. Just sayin'.

Posted by Ottawateeth | June 23, 2009 4:02 PM

the Canadian indie scene is lame. period, the end.

it's because being "famous" in Canada means all the same hubris as being famous in a larger country, but a lot less justification for it.

149 ignorant, stupid comments on a neighbour you rely on. I know youre country has great people, but my god do you have a lot of racist fuckheads. You've gotta lose your melting pot ideology. in the end your opinions don't matter. Music comes from everywhere...the good and the bad. Whether you like CC or not has nothing to do with the fact that they're Canadian.

Posted by Matt | June 23, 2009 6:27 PM

read the thread you knee jerk antiAmerican idiot.

the criticism was not about Canada, but about the effect that overblown boosterism has on Canadian bands' egos. It ruins bands that show early promise.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2009 6:30 PM

some guy grabbed her after she trashes her own equipment, she hits him and she's the bad guy? i dont think so, doesnt matter what country youre from, you dont grab/hit/smack/throw women. period. expect a punch in the face if you try to hurt a woman.

and as far as hating on canada goes, sadly the americans are so desperate to make someone look as bad as they do, and while canada isnt that bad, everyone kinda sucks.

where is all this "hating on Canada" in this thread?

You whining Canadians keep claiming you'vbe been badnouthed, but if you read the thread it's a legit criticism of how fame works in Canada, not a bunch of mean spirited shittalking. What's the deal, nothing negative can ever be said about Canada?

Nobody's really said anything hateful of your country, we all love Canada, dull as it is!

I think you Canadians are just shocked - shocked! - that anyone has anything less than fawning to say about your country.

Grow some balls, Canada. Your shit stinks as much as anybody else's. You can be criticized and it's not an outrage.

Ha. The irony being that Nickelback only got huge when Americans started buying their records in massive numbers. So, by the standard that external (i.e. American) validation counts for more than "nationalist boosterism", Nickelback must be the best thing that ever came out of Canada.

(The band came from Alberta and is now based in B.C., but neither wants to claim Nickelback as its own.)

Anyhow, I'm Canadian and I don't know anyone who gives a rat's ass about Crystal Castles. So how this one douchey duo is somehow representative of all that's wrong with the Canadian music industry... I don't get it. They get covered on Pitchfork more than they do in any Canadian media. So I guess Pitchfork must be part of the Canadian industry machine that's pushing crap on everyone.

And America will be hated for the Amero uniting once hated idiots frothing in Brooklyn and Canadians(who in all these play ground comments sounded a lot more informed, intelligent and rational) responding back.. can keep the zenophobia to a civil war south inbred rivalry probably stemming from too proud, myopic brooklyn transplants.
But yes that was sad seeing people talking about who's better than who( wars? dumb comment) when American media like Pitchfork do alot of the pushing of bands.

Posted by crystal Kristal | June 24, 2009 1:12 PM

man I love that Just Dance song

Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2009 1:31 PM

I don't think any Canadian has taken the time to explain why we so fervently embrace our musicians.
Up until recently a band in Canada couldn't reach any level of success until they made it in the U.S. For whatever reason, they weren't worth our time until they were accepted elsewhere. Think terrible, embarrassing acts like Celine Dion, the Barenaked Ladies, Bryan Adams (all of which I'll apologize for.)
So when a scene started brewing in Toronto with the already mentioned Broken Social Scene (whose acclaim comes from the singers/bands it spawned, not necessarily its three albums) and its Arts and Crafts label, it was exciting. Finally, musicians could make a name for themselves here without having to leave.
I think sometimes Canadians play the role of the over-zealous parent, applauding the most inane achievements, but, frankly, it's better than the self-deprecating alternative.
And whoever said Canadians rip off the U.S. in a quest for success is partially right. The Junos are a poorly copied version of the Grammies, for example. But then look at the Polaris Music Prize - a unique spin on awarding artists.
Canada does best when its not being a copycat.

Anyways, that's my dull, Canadian rant.

And, Crystal Castles do, truly, suck.

"fake band. manufactured by their manager + publicist."
_________________________________________________________

Alice Glass was born in 1989 in Toronto, Canada. In an NME interview, she stated that at the age of 14 she changed her name and ran away from home to live in a community of punks and drug addicts. She claimed this move was "due to an early existential crisis. I wanted to live primitively with no money and no shelter." A week after she turned 15, she was approached by Ethan Kath who had seen her play in her noise girlband, Fetus Fatale at Toronto's now defunct Q Bar. Kath was impressed by her performance, claiming at the time he thought he had found the "missing ingredient" to his music.

Glass is currently 19 years of age.

i was at sonar. and yes -- there was no sound from the start. it was lame. so i didn't bother to watch the rest of the show.

Posted by jason Fogaros | June 25, 2009 2:52 PM

Crystal Castles had no manager or publicist until after they were popular.

I don't even like them but I'll admit security has no right to touch an artist while they are performing.

Posted by Jeff | June 25, 2009 5:14 PM

jason ------ WRONG!! they were on salary LOOOOOONG before they had a record out or were popular.

alice is a rich kid who's parents bought her a condo @ 15.

basic thing everyone in the toronto music scene knows.

this band is fake fake fake.
