Dirty Projectors played Other Music in NYC - pic, setlist

Dirty Projectors @ Other Music in NYC - June 19, 2009 (photo by Kendra)
Dirty Projectors

"They played as a five-piece: Dave Longstreth on acoustic guitar (and singing), Nat Baldwin on stand-up bass, and Angel Deradoorian, Amber Koffman, and Haley Dekle singing. I was psyched for the show because it feels like the band is at a point where it will be hard to see them in a small venue anytime soon. (Longstreth was signing autographs after the show.) The ticket came free with a pre-order of the album.... The band opened with "police story' which, cursing and all, is staggeringly good when acoustic. It was warm (actually very hot) I mean warm vibes I guess. Teenagers (twittering as we awaited them to start) and grey-haired dudes, and all really happy. They played an encore (in addition to the set list below) of "stillness is the move" the jam, the single... [(we) exist]
Last night's date (June 19, 2009) was originally advertised as a show at the Williamsburg Waterfront. It was later discovered that it was a mistake in their tour dates and that they are actually playing Williamsburg Waterfront on JULY 19 (with White Denim). Their last NYC show before this one took place with TV on the Radio at Central Park Summerstage. The above-mentioned setlist, below...

DP
+ encore = "stillness is the move"

anon 1:14 - the most ignorant def person on BV - you probably love the National.

i am still digesting that set. completely dumbfounded and astonished by how amazingly beautiful his music sounds in all different incarnations. i am ready for another balls to the walls set with the full band...

yes 1:14, this classically trained prodigy musician surrounded by a band of virtuosos is SO shitty.

and David Byrne and Byork and everyone else who endorses them: all shit for brains.

1:20 -- I love Guided by Voices, Espers, Husker Du, Earth, Neil Young, Big Star, Bill Callahan, Black Sabbath, Dirty Three, Lou Reed, etc. etc. etc.

I think The National is one of the dullest bands around.

And yet I think the Dirty Projectors are a shitty, shitty band. Amazing, huh?

1:20, after you finish "digesting that set," don't forget to flush.

speaking of, someone had the WORST smelling veggie farts at that show - smelled like hot compost

Posted by snakeman | June 20, 2009 1:35 PM

well that's a shame. seems like you know what you are talking about. maybe you are missing something. or it's just not your bag. no harm. i agree about the national.

um, i actually like both bands. but then again, i like music that ranges from contemporary classical to old soul and 78s, blues, global, electronic and whatever bullshit 'genre' people want to tag styles as.

it's all music. no need to hate.

The vocals arrangements are advanced with this group and amazingly performed at the in-store. 'Two Doves' was shimmeringly beautiful - and I almost liked the pure sound of voice and guitar without the added strings throughout the recorded version.

Completely agree on all counts. "Two Doves" was incredible indeed. Album of the year...yes.

One good setlist deserves another from the same event. http://twitpic.com/80idr Aren't you fascinated by the similarities?

The most overrated band of the year is actually Phoenix. What a fucking horrible band!!

Dirty Projectors, however, are geniuses and can fucking shred.
