Dirty Projectors in van accident, but are ok - shows cancelled

Dirty Projectors @ Central Park Summerstage (more by Natasha Ryan)
Dirty Projectors

"After the Dirty Projectors' highly anticipated headlining appearance Wednesday night at Lee's Palace was cancelled [Tuesday] afternoon by the show's promoter, the Brooklyn art-rockers' label, Domino Records, have released the following statement explaining what happened:

Dirty Projectors' van flipped outside of Detroit, MI on their way up to Toronto. Although the crash was serious, we're happy to report that all members of the band have been safely discharged from the hospital. The band will be flying home to New York in the morning to regroup and rest. Unfortunately, the band will have to cancel Toronto and Montreal.

Thank you for understanding and sending your well wishes.

Refunds for the cancelled Lee's Palace show are available at point of purchase." [Eye Weekly]

Dirty Projectors played Other Music in NYC on Friday. A message directly from the band about the accident, and a picture of the flipped van, below...

We're O.K.!!!

Hi everyone

Some of you may have heard that we were in a pretty serious accident today. We are all pretty much fine- all walking and talking and all of that- just a little sore and a little shaken.

After stopping at a fruit stand at about 3pm today, we got back on the highway headed towards Toronto. At about 3:15, on the other side of the highway, a semi-truck moved into the left lane, not seeing the car that was there, and sent the car flying out of control over the meridian and right at us. The car hit us in the back and sent us flying onto our side, at which point we slid quite a ways down the road. Everyone was wearing a seatbelt except for Dave and Brian, but they and all of the rest of us luckily came out fine!

The whole thing was quite surreal; there were hugs and tears when we climbed out of the van. We all feel very fortunate right now to be walking around. Sorry about the canceled shows in Toronto and Montreal! We were really looking forward to coming up there again, but we will make it up to you as soon as possible!

Thank you for your concern and support. Looking forward to getting back out there and continuing to share music with our fans.

Remember the days when rock n' roll bands would roll their vans, dust themselves off, and just get on with the show??

No drugs or booze in this one, just a quick stop at the old fruit stand.

the real bummer is that if this happened just a few miles across the border the band probably would not be slapped with thousands of dollars in hospital bills, and so much bureaucratic bullshit that they will be swimming in paperwork and red tape.

Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2009 11:06 AM

so happy that they are all okay!

Van accidents are the secret danger of rock and roll. I'm glad this one wasn't more serious. That picture is also strangely beautiful.

i dont get the joke from 10:57 someone please explain!

Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2009 11:14 AM

that van was cursed. broke down on the way to columbus too.
very glad it kept them safe in this instance. could have been such a bad scene. get well soon projectors.

"Everyone was wearing a seatbelt except for Dave and Brian"

not wearing your seatbelt is not rock and roll. its about as cool as the governor of new jersey and even less rock and roll than going to the fruit stand.

"the real bummer is that if this happened just a few miles across the border the band probably would not be slapped with thousands of dollars in hospital bills, and so much bureaucratic bullshit that they will be swimming in paperwork and red tape"

I volunteer to give massages to Angel, Amber and Haley!

Now for some seriousness:

"the real bummer is that if this happened just a few miles across the border the band probably would not be slapped with thousands of dollars in hospital bills, and so much bureaucratic bullshit that they will be swimming in paperwork and red tape."

Medical care in Canada is free only for Canadian citizens and legal residents, dumbass. Sometimes, Yanks try to pass themselves off as Canucks to take advantage of the system.

"i dont get the joke from 10:57 someone please explain!"

'Meridian' can mean longitude. The correct word in this case is 'median'.

I'm not surprised by the mean comments here, but it is sad.

To everyone in the band, we're glad you're alright. Please play again as soon as you can.

I think Brooklyn Vegan should eliminate this comment board. BV is a solid site but the comment board makes the state of music seem very icky and it trivializes musicians and artists who work so hard.

Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2009 1:09 PM

1:09 maybe you shouldn't be on the internet. learn not to take things so personally, and ignore what you don't agree with. calling for censorship on any medium is just ridiculous.

Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2009 1:20 PM

1:09 if the boards bother you - why do you post on them, let alone read them?

1:20 agreed

1:58 wtf?

3:45 meh guy. faceplant lollerskates

1:09 is obviously in aMEHzing Baby.

Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2009 1:38 PM

hey pick a different thread to be childish assholes on.

please leave this one for people who genuinely care about these people in this band and are relived that they're safe and alive

Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2009 1:41 PM

whoah, i have travelled on HWY 401 many times, and these people are very lucky to be alive, and apparently, relatively unscathed. 401 is THE major highway through south-western ontario, and as such, there is ALOT of traffic. and much of this traffic is comprised of commercial transport. when an accident occurs on the 401, it is not uncommon for a chain reaction to occur. i know nothing about this band or their music, have read their name on certain sites, whatever...i am happy to hear that they were are okay. they happen to be the exception to the rule on a stretch of highway that is widely considered (by press, law enforcement and emergency responders) to be the most dangerous in all of canada. i wish them well.

i wonder which one wrote that release

Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2009 2:11 PM

The Other Music in-store was amazing, precious even. More precious still is arriving at your shows safely and so sorry to hear that the band had been in this serious accident. Hoping everyone feels better soon...

Say your prayers Projectors and thank your lucky stars

This could have turned out a lot worse.

D BOON FOREVER

Posted by Mike Watt | June 24, 2009 2:29 PM

Michadre - Too precious, didn't like it.

Posted by Ben Ratliff | June 24, 2009 5:09 PM

Ben, was it "too precious" as in too acoustic, too sweetly performed vocally, too intimate a stage? Were you expecting more of an "edge" to that performance? Or an electric set as with the Radio City Dark was the Night show?

Posted by Michandre | June 24, 2009 6:31 PM

Gurple deserves an ice cream cone!
