Girls @ Mercury Lounge, NYC - pics & setlist
photos by Fresh Bread

"Sometime in the last twelve months, Girls got good. They were good last July when I saw them at both Market Hotel and Glasslands, but but there was a ramshackle vibe that felt like they weren't sure whether they were really ready to leave the bedroom. But at Mercury lounge they are really good. Like "Whoa what happened" good. Credit new drummer (all loosey-goosey Keith Moon fills) and a nimble-fingered lead guitarist for the transformation. Christopher Owens and Chet White have always had the songs, mind you. In a lot of ways Girls are the ultimate San Francisco band: the laid-back vibe, the folky jammy-ness that has always been present there, as well as the neo-psych scene that has popped up over the last ten years. But it's totally different than the garage scene of Thee Oh Sees or Ty Segall (with whom they played at Cake Shop on Saturday). Girls are working on a whole other plain of dreamy, hazy beauty and noise." [Bill Pearis]Girls played three shows while they were in town - Mercury Lounge, Cake Shop, and Monster Island. Got there early and caught part of the Radical Sons set. They killed it. How old are those kids?

Girls killed it at Monster Island last Friday. Real Estate were excellent, then Girls brought it up just a little bit more, and by the time Kurt Vile (who wasn't bad, but wasn't nearly as engaging) played, people were slowly drifting out.

Can we got some more creative band names? All these bands have come out in the last few years...
Girls
U.S. Girls
Vivian Girls
Religious Girls
Dum Dum Girls
Teengirl Fantasy
Little Girls
Seriously, it's too hard to keep track of that shit.

Is anyone convinced that Todd P deliberately makes his shows disgusting hot shitfests in order to get people to leave so he can let more paying customers in? I didn't see a single fan in the venue and "Todd P" spent most of the show chasing off people catching a breath of air outside.

would have been nice if they opened at the dba show but WHATEVER. the beets killed it.
i always always confused Sisters and Girls. not even mentioning all of the other bands with girls in the name.

11:34, you're totally right
Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2009 12:59 PM
wait, let me get this straight...
you're thinking conspiracy theory because the promoter put together a show that a lot of people came to? Isn't getting a lot of people to come, like, his job?
Isn't it also pretty normal that spaces have to have the sidewalk cleared so the cops don't come?
Kinda sounds like you're just another hipster dufus with a know-it-all problem.

Hey all you fucking haters suck my balls; I don't want to pay $8 to not even see the bands because the show is oversold.
Posted by TODD PEE | June 30, 2009 1:32 PM
I guess Monster Island can't afford fans huh?

Funny every time when the cranky losers come out swinging at Todd P... as if it's his fault that their band sucks and can't get booked on shows.
It's kind of cute in a wounded puppy sort of way.

Hello. I'm not intern, Todd hasn't bought on any interns in almost two years, but I was working at that show on Friday. I'm an adult and you're an asshole who's got his facts wrong.
The Friday night show was sold out in less than 45 minutes and from then on we stopped letting anyone else in, until after Kurt Vile started two hours later. I don't know how can you complain about it being oversold when we stopped letting people in so early.
Beyond that, your weird conspiracy theory is just classic Brooklyn Vegan comment hokum. Tell me, how exactly does Todd make extra money by turning away dozens of people? Particularly when the door money goes to the bands anyway, but why get into specifics...
Moving on to your other stuff, there was an open window with a fan in it right next to the stage, and we had the doorway propped wide open to the street (all of which can get shows into trouble for noise, but we decided to go for comfort).
No one could have predicted that this show would be so huge. I've seen all the bands play before (except Beach Fossils) and none of them has ever attracted so many people.
The no loitering and no alcohol on the sidewalk rule is the rule everywhere and we don't have an option about it. You can talk to the police about it if you disagree, we can't change their rules.
You know, there are a lot of options to see shows in New York City, plus you could start organizing your own shows. It sounds like you really have a lot of opinions about how shows should be run. You should really get off the soapbox and start booking shows yourself.

The fact that people actually get pissed on here and try to defend their opinions is why so much sarcastic and immature shit gets posted in the BV comments.....and I happen to enjoy all of this.
Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2009 10:19 PM
2:08 that really was a bit much. i don't think todd p or any diy shows are really being hurt by BV comments. as far as anyone is concerned it's pretty standard to say A. it's too hot in the venue b. the venue is a fire hazard/deathtrap c. todd and his interns/friends are annoying.
whether those things are true or not is kind of irrelevant in the BV comments, but they are expected.

the original poster was claiming that the promoter "makes his shows disgusting hot shitfests in order to get people to leave so he can let more paying customers in."
that's a totally offensive and insane claim and the guy claiming it deserves to get schooled.
Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2009 12:11 AM
i mean, whatever. people make outrageous, baseless claims here all the time. there is no way to tell if the person was even at the show.
