DOWNLOAD: Jeff Hanson - Hiding Behind the Moon (MP3)

Jeff Hanson 1978-2009According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Hanson "likely died from a fall or other accident at the concrete-floored apartment, which he had just moved into days earlier, said his sister, Sara Hanson". Sara Hanson also pointed out that "her brother never had any trouble with substance abuse".We are deeply shocked and saddened to report that Kill Rock Stars artist Jeff Hanson passed away on June 5, 2009 in his home, a victim of a terrible accident. Jeff has been a part of the KRS family since 2003 when he became the first artist signed to the label from an unsolicited demo.
Jeff Hanson was an amazing artist, a riotously funny person, and a good friend. Everyone at Kill Rock Stars feels that we were privileged to put out his records. We will miss him tremendously. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

This is so sad. The first time I ever saw Jeff play was at the Knitting Factory in NYC in May of 2003. I actually went to the show to see Jeff, but stayed to see his new label-mates The Decemberists. It was their first-ever NYC show. It was probably his first NYC show too. I've continued to follow both of them since. Jeff's most recent album, Madam Owl, was released on Kill Rock Stars in 2008.
Two things that usually come to mind when first listening to Jeff's music: his female-sounding voice, and the similarities to his label-mate Elliott Smith. Jeff was just 31 when he died. Elliott was 34. Past Jeff posts HERE. Videos below....

He never heard of you either, asshole.
Hey BV, please make commenters register or something. A lot of loyal readers are sick of the idiots and trolls.

I was never actually into this guy's stuff, but I remember first hearing him via BV a while back and being taken aback by his remarkable voice. Feminine sounding, sure, but what does that matter. Anyhow, the music wasn't necessarily my taste, but I knew it was definitely the product of some serious talent. To have this guy swept away so young and with such a future is devastating no matter what kind of music you're into. If you can't respect different genres and different styles, then you have no place saying word one about anything musical. RIP JEFF. May your friends, family, and fans get through this.

He is going to be huge now. Fans will be coming out of the woodwork. He will be compared to other musical virtuosos like Elliot Smith, Jeff Buckley & Kurt Cobain.... you know, guys who died young. This will be great for his album sales.

^^^ I know. Now every reader is going to love him. People will download his music now. But honestly, no one heard of him before.

What a loss. He was definitely on the precipice of becoming big. I think, despite how much artists are mythologized when they die young, he would have become much bigger anyway. A truly unique voice gone far too soon. Jeff, we hardly knew ya, but thanks for leaving us the gift of your work.

Jeff shredded harder than anyone too!

I was disappointed when he had to cancel his most recent show at Pianos but now there won't be another one... Jeff you will be missed for sure.

it seems like the BV thing to do is to like stuff that no one has heard of.. what with the MEH bullshit.. you people make life terrible.
never heard of the dude, but the guy clearly was talented if KRS signed him through an unsolicited demo!

Thank you for noting his death. When I heard the news it it was like a punch in the stomach. Good to know I'm not the only one who loved his music.

Sad to hear this, almost two years later. I can't claim to be one who really "got" Jeff, but I too was at the Knitting Factory show in 2003. Here's the picture I took:
