Neil YoungI haven't heard Neil Young's 8-CD box set Neil Young Archives, Vol. 1: 1963-1972 yet, but this could be my favorite box set of 2009 with over 40 previously unreleased tracks.

Young isn't the only veteran rocker with a release this week, Elvis Costello drops Secret, Profane and Sugarcane this week as well.

Aside from the Neil Young box set and the Elvis Costello disc, the week abounds with worthwhile releases. From what has already been sent my way, I can recommend Cass McCombs' Catacombs, Diane Birch's Bible Belt, Girl in a Coma's Trio B.C., Patrick Wolf's The Bachelor (which very well may make my year-end favorite albums list), and The Sounds' Crossing the Rubicon.

What new music can you recommend this week? What's on your shopping list? Did I miss any releases?

The Bachelor is an excellent record. Patrick Wolf is growing into his own.

Just looked at the track listing for the Neil Young box: very underwhelming. I thought this was supposed to be some sort of treasure trove of previously unreleased songs -- stuff of the caliber of Pushed It Over the End.

Instead, out of a total of 8 CD's, we get:
(1) The Filmore East live CD that was already released a couple of years ago;
(2) The Massey Hall live CD that was also released recently;
(3) More live versions of well-worn songs (do I really need to hear yet another version of Southern Man?)
(4) Most redundantly, a bunch of regular studio versions of familiar album tracks (Cowgirl in the Sand? Down by the River? We need a new box set for that? Really?)

Who's supposed to be buying an 8-CD NY box, other than the die-hard NY fans who already have most of the above stuff?

The only thing that's worthwhile on the box is the first CD of early work (1963-68), about half of which is pre-Buffalo Springfield. Most of the rest is unbelievably redundant.

Oh yeah, there are the DVD/Blu-Ray versions, which add the Journey Through the Past film. Interesting stuff, but $200-$300 for that plus maybe a couple dozen worthwhile tracks is a bit steep, no?
