PJ Harvey & John Parish @ Weesner Amphitheatre, MN - 6/13/09 (dastinkytwinz)
PJ Harvey John Parish

"I've been a PJ Harvey fan for years, but never got around to seeing her until tonight. Only songs from her two albums with John Parish were played -- understandably, as this is the tour for A Woman A Man Walked By --- and though this was somewhat of a disappointment, it was wonderful to finally see her. Since I got the aforementioned album I've been loving it, but hadn't realized just how...theatrical it is, for lack of a better word, and she played that aspect up on stage. One minute she'd be doing a spazzy dance and the next she was still, arms at her sides, doing delicate as the song demanded it. Doug and I disagreed on the lighting: it reminded him of our high school, and I thought it was perfectly intimate. The bare set and minimal lighting matched the rawness of the music for me." The above review is from PJ Harvey and John Parish's Beacon Theatre show on June 9th. That gig was part of their A Woman a Man Walked By tour, which finishes on the West Coast this weekend (June 21st). The colorful shot above was from Saturday's Minneapolis show. The setlist from both of those shows are below.

PJ Harvey and Parish have a long history together - the pair also collaborated on Harvey's most recent solo album, 2007's White Chalk. The band on that disc was filled out by members of Dirty Three, Eric Drew Feldman and Jim White. That band (Dirty Three) will be in NYC and touring North American in September.

loved this show. taut was awesome. i was in the third row at beacon and at one point i swear i was looking her in the eyes.

somebody even got her flowers. that was kinda weird and stalkery.

it's weird and stalkery to get an artist flowers at a concert? I always thought it was sweet.

it would be weird and stalkery to show up at pj's house with flowers and a handmade collage. flowers at a show, not so much.

@ last year's Liz Phair show, there was a guy directly in front of her w/ a massive bunch of roses. she deliberately avoided eye contact for the entire evening.

yeah, it was weird and stalkery.

I don't know. I thought flowers were pretty normal. You may not see at as much at indie rock concerts, but they happen all the time at cabaret-type shows. It's not at all stalker-y. It's harmless. And fairly traditional. You need to get out more & get yourself cultured if you think that constitutes being a stalker.

On an unrelated note, that Weesner Amphitheatre looks pretty paltry. Looks like they're playing in someone's backyard. (Why is BV covering shows in Minnesota, too?)

not going to cabaret = uncultured?

umm, ok.

i saw little annie last year. that's enough cabaret fill for a decade at least.

Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2009 3:50 PM

no.

uncultured = thinking a fan presenting an artist with flowers after a performer is "stalking."

cabaret was just an example.

^^

i meant "performance." (not performer.)

i stalk elementary schools.

Posted by Sexual Preditor | June 16, 2009 4:38 PM

is giving the band a bottle of booze stalker-ish?

Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2009 4:47 PM

It may not be stalking, but it is a little weird

Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2009 4:48 PM

how about sending myspace messages to bands asking what time they are coming on?

"uncultured = thinking a fan presenting an artist with flowers after a performer is "stalking.""

you should have seen the guy's boner. it was stalkery.

Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2009 5:17 PM

i have a boner

I didn't know flowers were that much of a deal. I think it's sweet and PJ Harvey loved them. I wish I would've brought her flowers!

Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2009 9:15 PM

Whats a bonner?

Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2009 11:38 PM

as long as you don't ask Daft Punk what time they are coming on, its cool.

Saw her in Portland last night. I was also bummed she didn't play any of her older tracks, but I suppose she's sick of playing them all the time after almost 20 years. PJ is hot, but even hotter in person and the show still rocked.
